 James Stewart was born Feb 24, 1957 in Trenton, New Jersey. At age nine he began his musical studies on the violin, however at age twelve he switched to the clarinet, and later the alto saxophone. In high school he began to study with Mr. Tom Gryce, the younger brother of the world famous saxophonist Gi Gi Gryce. By age sixteen he began playing the tenor saxophone and flute, and started playing in local bands in and around Trenton. He later received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education at New Jersey City University in 1980. James has also studied with saxophonist Jimmy Anderson (Woody Shaw's Teacher), Bill Phipps, and William Cody.
James has gone on to work with the Duke Ellington orchestra, George Benson, Randy Weston, and countless others. At present, James plays soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, piccolo, flute, alto flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet.
