All of us at Yehoodi Central are heartbroken about the devastating earthquake that tore apart the already desperately poor Caribbean country of Haiti last Tuesday. Our prayers go out to the families of the tens of thousands who perished and the hundreds of thousands of injured.
We urge you to support charities that are on the ground now providing life-saving relief to Haitians. There are a number of worthwhile places you can contribute. Here are a few:
* Donate by cell phone to the Red Cross by simply texting "HAITI" to the number 90999. This will automatically donate $10 to the Red Cross from your account linked to your cell phone.
* UNICEF requests donations for relief for children in Haiti via their Haiti Earthquake Fund. You can also call 1-800-4UNICEF.
* Mercy Corps is on the ground in Haiti providing humanitarian assistance. Donate online, call 1-888-256-1900 or send checks to Mercy Corps Haiti Earthquake Fund; Dept NR; PO Box 2669; Portland, OR 97208.
If there are other swing-related benefits and fundraisers, please feel free to mention those in the comments.
For Canadians reading, the Canadian government will match cash contributions from individuals to a number of approved charities including the Canadian Red Cross. This is in addition to the roughly 2000 military personnel and equipment in or en-route to Haiti.
There is a fundraiser at Paddy Reilly's, 2nd Ave at 29th Street, on Thursday Jan 21. Live music - space to dance. The fantastic LES Hot Club Jazz Band (gypsy jazz) are playing from 6:30-7:15pm - not sure who else is playing after, other than the Itinerants.
"Change your thoughts, and you change your world" - Norman Vincent Peale.
Sorry not swing related, but my organization Global Kids is helping organize this Haiti Benefit Concert this Friday, January 22, in Brooklyn. It's going to be a really neat coming together of Haitian culture, music, food and more.

I'm trying to plan a fundraiser in our scene.
