I have a Kindle and do like reading eInk. My main problem is with the poor navigation. It's actually hard to move around in the book and find the passages you want.

I think the nook is probably better with it's bottom screen.

The iPad should be even better at this. Swiping to riffle through pages would be very cool. Or navigating via thumbnails.

Actually comics are a huge market, especially internationally. I like having an ipod full of music vs stakes of cd's, I would rather get rid of boxes of comics and read comics on an ipad, and I would pay for that.

I gotta disagree with you bro on some things. Traditional media is hurting but not because they have content no one wants, but because they have competition they haver had before. They're massive content making machines (don't you work for them by the way?) and they'll find a way to keep making paid content, even if it's adv based like it is for the most part now (subscriptions revenue for magazines are peanuts compared to adv dollars). Besides, TV for example is free, but people still buy DVD's of those shows like crazy.

I'm not saying they're won't be casualties (craig's list killed classified ads and therefore a lot of local papers) but mags like Cooks Illustrated have a paid website that is successful and for the most part just an archive of their recipes and article, and they still have their print mag. Mother Earth News sells ads on their site and sells DVD archives of their articles.

They're all valuale in some way, and now they'll a new way to distribute that doesn't include one of their most expensive line items: printing costs. Put all my mags on one ipad, vs the stake of mags I have to deal with now, I would be very happy. Same thing bibliophiles say about the kindle.

Until iTunes the record industry didn't know which end was up in the new internet world. iTunes, the itunes store, emusic, and others made it easy and cheap to buy music (produced by the music industry) vs all the BS you deal with if you illegally download it (spyware, bad quality rips, viruses). Is it successful for the record industry is another question (they say no).

Magazines, newspapers, they're all ad driven, they'll adjust (though web ad rates blow, but would that change for the better if print completely shifts to web?). When advertisers want eyes and they have dollars to spend, that money will find a place to go and it will ride along with content someone produced.

Not sure why they went with standard def resolution (4:3 ratio) vs 16:9. That seems odd, everythings 16:9 these days and given the shape of the ipad, figured 16:9. scratchs head

No multi-tasking, that's a bummer, gotta be battery life thing.

No sms? not even in 3g version?

You said; "Traditional media is hurting but not because they have content no one wants, but because they have competition they haver had before. "

That's the exact same thing I said. No one wants to buy a stupid magazine when the blog does the same thing for free. They're generating all sorts of content but no one wants it. Some magazines are special enough (like Cook's Illustrated) to still do well, but others (like some of the more frivolous stuff like Cosmo or some of the midrange newspapers) are really piss poor at seeing the future. They think their content is really special, that it will be missed if gone. Only a small few companies enjoy that (the NY Times and Cook's being two of them). So I stand by what I'm saying. With a few exceptions this is toast for traditional print media. Magazines are dying and this will make them die faster.

And yes, I do work for a media biz, and yes I do think it's dying and no one in that biz wants to admit it. I do think magazines are a touch different than TV, but I'm still looking for a new career.

The battery life thing is still not a good excuse. Jailbroken iPhones do background stuff all the time, multitask, etc. It's all very elegantly done and batteries don't suffer. The Palm mobile device OS has an exceptional multitasking protocol. Android too.

And with a device this powerful and this big, there's no reason not to at least allow 1 other app to run in the background like AIM or Pandora or whatever. Maybe not full on multitasking with as many apps as you want, but a limit of 2 or 3 would be a good compromise.

Aren't there rumors of iPhone OS 4 supporting multitasking? If so, I would have expected them to release it on the iPad as part of the new hotness, but either it's not coming, or it's not done yet.

Since this is just a huge iPod Touch, I think a more befitting name would have been iPod SMACK.

TXJess and I were talking about how cool it would be if the iPad supported Dashboard-like widgets - nothing as full fledged as an app, but something that would allow you to run an AIM session or throw out a few tweets on the side, maybe stream pandora or look up something on wikipedia while you were doing your other work. This would provide for the multitasking without providing actual multitask functionality.

If the iPad supported multi, I would be fine if the phone didn't. For both not to is just weird.

If it came in two sizes we'd have the MinIPad and the MaxIPad.

Sorry if this is common knowledge, but does the iPad have a kickstand? If it's main purpose is to consume media, does one have to hold the thing and/or lay it flat to work? Seems annoying and awkward if that's the case.

It does look so sleek and lovely...

So while I definitely see the iPad being used for books, I don't think it's going to catch on with the dedicated reader set. I don't think people are going to buy it instead of ereaders. If they're dedicated book fans they'll get ereaders. If someone's not a dedicated book fan they may not buy an ereader now and instead buy this and occasionally read a book on it.

I'm not so sure. I consider myself a dedicated reader. I have the kindle app on my ipod Touch, and I love it. I prefer the backlit screen because it's less ambient light, especially when I'm trying to sleep. I find reading on the touch is faster and more ergonomic than with real books - the touch is lighter, and I can adapt the font size to my ideal. I also find that I read noticeably faster on the Touch than with books, and that's surprising given my start level.

I'm still going to go to the library first, but for hardbacks that aren't coming to the library I've consistently purchased the kindle version.

I also have the kindle for PC and it's much less friendly than the touch version - I only use it when I'm traveling, my ipod's battery is dead, and I'm desperate to read something. The touch screen is key.

But like Apple's phone, I'll be waiting for v2.

And when they do, it will probably be smaller, thinner, more discreet. Thus they will call it the iPon.

(I promise I'm done now)

It looks pretty, but the lack of multitasking is a bit silly. Even if battery power conservation is what you're going for. And I agree that this should be a pretty decent e-reading device. It'd be especially fantastic as has been stated for comics. I have an app called Comicbooklover which works pretty well when I take my macbook and turn it sideways, not having to deal with the keyboard would be awesome! Will it work on the iPad?

Still I'm definitely interested to see where this goes in the future, and curious about some of the proclaimed educational applications. (Could we finally be seeing the demise of the $300 textbook?!) I doubt it very seriously, but it'd certainly be nice to only need to carry this device instead of 3 or 4 textbooks through the course of a day.

Also, someone asked if it would have a kickstand. I don't think the device itself has one, but apparently the case does. Can't remember where I saw that, but I think it was on Engadget.

My main focus is to have a good time, and to make sure my partner is having a good time. If I accomplish those goals than by my count I'm doing it right!

I schlep enough stuff with me already so I am not as interested in this as I was with the iphone.

What I did find interesting is that this thing has generated as much humor as lust:

Indeed. If I'm to consume "media" on it, it needs a kick stand and an easily cleaned surface.

What?

Wait, we don't have to go to the effort of making innuendos about the name.

Steve Jobs is taking care of that all by himself!

(Oh, he did NOT just use that word to describe it...)

So I wonder if the name will just totally flop with women. The first thing that my wife said about it was "There were no women in the room when the decided on that name."

It can't be good that "iTampon" is a trending topic on Twitter and "iPad" is nowhere to be seen.

It does, but you have to buy it extra. No, not a joke.

Large iPod touch with 3G option.

I'm actually happy that it's not the awesome thing I expected it to be. That way I don't feel compelled to buy it. It would be a nice device to use for browsing the web at coffee shops. But since I don't go to coffee shops much anymore, I think between my iPhone and MacBook Pro I'm covered for a little while :)

I suppose 'iPad' doesn't come up on Bing, otherwise Jobs would have seen the MadTV spoof that is again making its way around the interwebs.

I don't mind the i + monosyllabic fundamental item naming convention, but I heard the name and my response was '...really?'

I suppose I'm not in the demographic for the iPad, because I don't feel I'm missing anything substantial by not having one between my iPhone and MacBook—at least not $500 worth.

I think the iPad is cool, and I think this is a future consideration whose technology will likely be integrated into MacBooks in the future—but right now, I think it is little more than a novelty.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm no more.

My boss made an iPad joke BEFORE the keynote today.

As someone in video I am really surprised it's not 16:9.

I have considered getting an iPod Touch and a Nook, so this might be a good compromise for me. I am with Verizon for at least another year and also have no reason to switch, so unless the AT&T exclusivity ends, I'm not getting an iPhone anytime soon.

The iPad isn't tied to AT&T. It's unlocked, so if you wanted to use it T-Mobile, you could.

Quoted from Marcelo
But 5-10 years from now it's possible this will be what the original apple powerbook was, the first of what eventually became the standard format for mobile computing.

You actually bought into that BS Jobs spit out during his speech? That's awesome. ;-)

The iPad will set the standard for mobile computing like Apple's one button hockey puck mouse set the standard for pointing devices.

Severely underpowered, under-featured, incredibly restricted, hugely expensive, and its key selling point is the elimination of a key interface technology with something far, far worse. The iPhone/iTouch only gets a pass for having no real physical keys because it's tiny. We put up with a lot of stupid from the iPhone because of how valuable portability is. What's the iPad's excuse?

I predict Apple will sell a ton of these things to the usual fanbois, who will carry it around religiously for at least six months maybe even a year until even they finally realize...it's no more portable then a laptop and a hell of a lot less useful. Ultimately it'll just sit at home, unused, while their iPhone gets a workout. At some point it'll get glued to a wall, spending the rest of its days as a glorified picture frame.

"Meh" doesn't quite cover it. More like, "Epic Meh"

My biggest question...can you easily replace the battery? Or do you have to void your warranty and buy aftermarket, or send it back to Apple for a $300 upgrade?

I may not live there anymore, but my dancing feet will always be from L.A.

I must say I'm loving Job's presentation...

Jobs: "It must be better then anything else at the following tasks: Browsing -No Flash?!?! Email -No sane typing interface?!?! Photos -No camera?!?! No SD card slot?!?! Video -No HDMI out?!?! No 16x9?!?! Music -No background apps?!?! Games -No tactile controls?!?! eBooks LCD screen?!?! Large form factor?!?!

Quote, "Otherwise it has no reason for being" -Steve Jobs

It's really hard to beat the one button hockey puck mouse, but the iPod may well be the worst product Apple has ever created.
