Dear Mermaids and Mermen,

Spring is right around the corner, but I am thinking of summer. :-) Yes, it is that time of year. Time to clean out your closets, get out your light jackets, and start thinking about what you might wear on the best day of the year: Coney Island USA's Mermaid Parade on June 19, 2010.

Every year a group of swing dancers - the winningest group in parade history- the Brooklyn Bombshells (led by Miss Behave (Amy Jacobus) and I) get together on parade day to dress up, celebrate the beginning of summer, revel in the creativity on display and social dance along the parade route at one of the best art parades in the world.

Part of our group (lately the majority) has been getting together with me in the month or so before the parade to learn a routine that we perform for the judges. You do not need to be a superstar to perform in the routine- I purposely make the routine easy to learn, fun to perform, interesting to watch and all the while making sure that we are always addressing the challenges of dancing on concrete. If you are interested in participating, save the following dates for rehearsals. You do not need to attend every rehearsal, but I recommend coming to as many as you possibly can.

Sunday, May 23rd - 5-7 pm Wed, June 2: 9-10:30pm Sunday, June 6: 5-7 pm* Wed, June 9: 9-10:30 pm** Sunday, June 13: 5-7 pm Wed, June 16: 9-10:30 pm**

Final dress and performances: Thursday, June 17- 8-9pm Fram rehearsal ($4)** Saturday, June 19th- PARADE DAY! Thursday, June 24th- Perform at Frim Fram Saturday, June 26- perform at Swing 'n Salsa at YSBD

*this is the last first rehearsal! **mandatory

Tammy and Charlie at You Should Be Dancing are graciously supporting our rehearsal space and efforts to keep your costs low. The fee for the workshops/rehearsals is $40 per person, payable the first rehearsal you attend.

To cover the cost of our entry fee, water for yous along the route, snacks and bribes for the judges (more on that later!) Amy Jacobus will collect monies prior to and on parade day. Last year the fee was $12 pp. Look for more details on that later.

Are you asking yourself, "What do I wear?" Everyone- even folks who are just social dancing along the route- MUST wear a “costume”. Suggestions are: vintage bathing suit, sailor suit, anything seersucker, tie-tops, Cabana Boy, sea creature, or use your imagination! If you show up in shorts and a t-shirt you will be mocked mercilessly. At least put a coconut bra on over that! If you want to see what we've done in the past, a little search for 'mermaid parade photos' (or 'pics') will bring up a bunch on both Yehoodi.com and Flickr.com. (Yehoodi might be better to see what our group wears.) Here's a yehoodi thread to get you started http://yehoodi.com/comment/80656/post-mermaid-parade-pix-here/ We will discuss footwear and costumery a lot during the rehearsal process, so if you're stuck, we will unstick you.

If you have any questions, I, Miss Behave, and many other experienced yemerpeople will be happy to answer them, so don't be shy.

That's all for now. Enjoy this beautiful weather we're having and I look forward to seeing you all in May/June!

When do I start reminded people that they do not have to learn the routine to participate but they MUST wear a festive costume to be in the parade?

I am starting the traditional Mermaid Parade Routine Choreography freakout which will result in routine goodness. Think good thoughts for me (and yous!) people!

The song as of this minute is: 'Speading Rhythm Around' as done by the Lost and Wandering Blues and Jazz Band with our own Madeleine Peyroux.

The routine nearly choreographed, diets being thunk of, costumes being made, the weather gorgeous, could I be happier?

For the record, I am wearing the suit purchased last year that was hidden underneath my raincoat. Pretty in Pink is what I am hoping for. Can I lose 5 pounds by parade time?

The first rehearsal was yesterday and it was amazing! It was so great to see so many familiar faces, and even greater to see the new faces that showed up. It's not too late to join the routine, so if you wanna do it, the next rehearsal is Wednesday, June 2nd from 9-10:30 pm.

Every time a new lead came through the door there was cheering, so, if you're a leader, and you're into that kinda thing, be sure to come over!
