New Clash of the Titans Sucks!!!

::SPOILER ALERT (if you care)::

The cinematography was great, and so was the special effects, but the flick was filled with plot loop holes and poorly portrayed characters that made me apathetic to the climax of the movie. As a kid, the 1981 version was something I grew up watching, so I can't help but compare the two.

Some of the plot points I liked in the new flick was the idea of Hades wanting to conquer Zeus, and that a God's power is only as strong as the number of people that believe in them. But I find that none of these ideas were executed enough in the film to give them any significance.

::BEGIN RANT::

The worst plot hole was Hades being in control of the Kraken and telling the people of Argos that he would release it in 10 days . . . why? If you have the Kraken and releasing it will drive up enough fear so he can take on Zeus, then why not release it now?!

Next, I don't get the motivation of Perseus or Zeus. Why should Perseus care about Argos? (Unlike the original, this is not a love story between Perseus and Andromeda) Zeus obviously has a love/hate relationship with humans because he can't make up his damn mind, and continues changing it through out the move.

Lastly, Io is the love interest, that's cool, I get it, but its so unbelievable, and then to bring her back in the end makes me roll my eyes so hard I feel like I'm going to have a stroke.

Anyway.

::END RANT::

What did you think?

All I remember about the 80s version was the neat steampunk owl. I assume they got that wrong too in this version.

Actually, it's not part of this movie, although the prop/puppet from the original movie makes a cameo (sound fx, movement, and all) when Perseus is going though a trunk of weapons. When he pulls it out he says, "What is that?!" Another soldier then replys, "You don't need that!"

That wasn't a call back to the original movie, it was a flat-out insult to fans of the original. As a friend of mine said, "Why don't they just have a shot of someone kicking Ray Harrayhausen in the balls?"

CHUD has a good article how the film became crap between editing of plotlines and reshoots to cover up some excised things.

With the success of movies like the Dark Knight, I let my hopes get up too high that Hollywood was learning that character drama was makes action movies so great, and even a little effort could go a long way. I guess I was wrong.

I really hope they don't make a sequel, because I'd like to forget about this movie as quickly as possible.

Thanks for that!

That story definitely explains a lot about where everything went wrong.

What a shame! I remember seeing the original in a theater (yeah, I'm that old) and I was excited about the remake. I had been planning to take my kids to see the remake in theaters but after all the horrible reviews I decided to give it a miss.

I logged into NetFlix and watched the original with my younger daughter (as of this writing it's one of the films you can watch on demand). She really liked it despite the dated special effects.

Even though Roger Ebert gave the movie a B, I think this was a poignant quote:

"Most of the film involves terrifying battles between mortals and special effects."

What's interesting about this is it sounds like the exact opposite of what they did with "The Man in the Iron Mask." For some bizarre reason, the film makers couldn't accept the fact that D'Artagnan would back the "real" king simply out of a sense of honor and loyalty, so they concocted some totally twisted thing where he had an illicit affair with the Queen Mother and was secretly the king's father. :eyeroll:

New movie was poorly made and poorly acted. Original had more heart.
