Did you see it? This New Orleanian is curious how it might've played in the great elsewhere. Have questions about events/timelines/etc. ? I'll do the best I can and I'm sure some others will chime in as well. There is a very good blog at http://backoftown.wordpress.com where a group of local bloggers are doing commentary on the show.

Couple of random notes. Saw a few musicians some of you might be familiar with in the briefest of cameos though I know there will be more of them. Bruce Brackman was the clarinetist in the Treme Brass Band in the funeral procession at the end of the episode. He actually plays with that band, and the Palmetto Bug Stompers, and the Cottonmouth Kings (formerly jazz Vipers) and some others.

Got a kick out of the scene in Vaughn's where the Davis McAlary characters walks by and pats Davis Rogan on the shoulder. The McAlary character is based on Rogan and it's pretty representative of the guy. At dba, there's a laminated sign behind the bar that says "If your name is Davis Rogan, Please Leave." So if you found him irritating, you've got plenty of company.

Actually saw David Simon this past Friday night at the Spotted Cat intently watching the Cottonmouth Kings. Pretty sure Overmeyer was with him as well. Clearly he was doing some research. So you may see the original Jazz Vipers lineup reunite for the show and play a bit. Or he'll include some music as he did buy a CD from the band.

So that's why you weren't out last night dancing!!

I haven't seen it, but dying to. Bruce was busy playing at the Fleur de Lindy Main dance, so he couldn't watch it either. ;)

Well that and my legs are on FIRE from the last 3 days. It's a good burn though. If you need to see it, let us know via fb. Trying to put together a watch party for those who don't have HBO. I need to watch it again anyway since I was way to caught up in all the meta references and whatnot

Yep, watched it twice. I'm very curious to see where it goes but having Kermit Ruffins do more than a cameo was a brilliant piece.

Too bad Kermit was talking up Houston about that time in real life. Bah!

But awesome. Highly recommended.

Other musicians I spotted were Tuba Phil of Rebirth, Uncle Lionel Batiste and Bennie King of Treme Brass Band, Bruce Brackman, there were quite a few. I like that the producers gave a lot of musicians speaking rolls so they would earn more money than just an extra. I recognized quite a few locations too. Rumor has it some of the actors showed up at the Saturday dance.

Not gonna comment yet on the second episode as I'm still absorbing except to say that it was better than the pilot.

In addition to back of town, The Times-Pickyanose's Dave Walker is putting extensive annotations for each episode up on their web site. These obviously have spoilers. http://www.nola.com/treme-hbo/index.ssf/2010/04/hbos_treme_explained_do_you_kn.html for ep 1 and http://www.nola.com/treme-hbo/index.ssf/2010/04/treme_explained_meet_de_boys_o.html for ep 2.

Lastly HBO puts up a listing of every song played with download links http://www.hbo.com/#/treme/episodes/1/02-meet-de-boys-on-the-battlefront/music

I FINALLY got to see Steve Zahn last week. He walked by and said hi while I was busking. I love his character.

Ok, so I was at Dos Jefes last night watching. Dos Jefes is a cigar bar where a lot of those musicians play.

Scott, did you see Robert, the sax player with the beret in the background at Cafe Rose Nicaud and Dr. Bone as in extra in Spotted Cat?

Seriously, if you're digging the show but don't understand the terminology, check out the nola.com link. http://www.nola.com/treme-hbo/index.ssf/2010/05/treme_explained_on_the_foot_of.html

I'm a couple of episodes behind. Still kind of devastated by the ending of episode 3. Am I the voyeur, looking for disaster porn?

So great, so far.

Just started watching the show since getting HBO this week. Watched 6 episodes over two days via On Demand. Love the show. Some critics have commented that the pace is slow, but I love the celebration of music and the extended clips of musicians playing.

Haha, "the pace is slow." So are our people, politics, and way of life. I'd say it's extremely true to life. It's like watching your friends on TV (and in many of our cases, they ARE our friends on the show) and being a part of their lives. This last episode gave me nightmares though.

I didn't realize until two weeks ago that Davis' character (Steve Zaughn) is based on a real guy in New Orleans named Davis Rogan, who used to be an 'OZ DJ and still plays music. Too funny.

Two more episodes left. Can't wait to see them! BTW, I love you Chef John Besh!!!!

OMFG!!! Scott, last night was a musical orgasm of great talent. Bob French, Richard Moten, Danny Abel, Tom McDermott, and the list goes on.

Seriously, that year was the best Mardi Gras ever!

Can't wait to the finale next week.

Oh, did you get the whole "Facilities Street?"
