Herrang 2010: Friday Night Masquerade Parties

We don’t need to tell you that the Herrang Dance Camp (just north of Stockholm in Sweden) is the largest Lindy Hop camp on the planet. We shouldn’t have to mention that it has been an annual occurrence for over 25 years and usually lasts for 4 plus weeks. Yehoodi readers aren’t surprised that many world class Lindy Hop instructors teach there every year. No, that stuff is pretty common knowledge.

We want to talk about the Friday Night Masquerade. These are the Friday themed parties are at the camp. At the close of every intensive week of classes, music and dancing the main camp location (called the Folkets Hus) is transformed into a magical place. Campers and staff pull out all the stops with costumes, performances, whatever it takes to make the theme come alive. If you are one of the lucky folks going to Herrang this year, make sure you read on so you won’t be caught unprepared during one of these fun Friday events.

Week 1: Welcome to Fantasy Island
 Friday 9th July 2010, 9 p.m.

In your wildest imagination, in your deepest and most daring dreams, what is the most wonderful, fantastic or just simply craziest thing you would wish to happen? Whatever the answer is, this is the place for you. Welcome to Fantasy Island. The place on earth where all your dreams may come true. The year is 1980 and you´re invited to a mysterious Island, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. At the whitest of all beaches, under the tallest and most graceful palm tree you’ll find your host for the evening, the amazing Rourke. So get your hair permed, your tan glowing and your smallest shorts packed and get ready for the time of your life. "My dear guests, I am Mr. Rourke, your host. This is the Fantasy Island."

Week 2: Bollywood MasalaFriday 16th July 2010, 9 p.m.

A mix of warm purple and rusty orange, saffron red and shimmering yellow. Hot weather. The sun is making the sand under your feet to burn, the food your tongue to curl. Coriander, cumin, garlic and cinnamon. Music and beautiful girls in glittering saris, swirling around a proud Khan. He sings his heart out. High tones, sitars and rhythms from the stretched skin of a tabla. Rickshaws and honking taxis, red soil and vegetating cows. Welcome to Bollywood Masala!

Week 3: The Greatest Show on Earth
 Friday 23rd July 2010, 9 p.m.

A tiny lady in a white tricot between two trapezes is swaying like a feather. A never ending smiling clown with an apple red nose is staring at her from down under. A chorus line with checked zebras, tamed polar bears and bearded ladies is dancing in the background. Outside the circus arena a juggler is fist fighting with a pickpocket who stole his underwear. Accordions, balalaikas and whining from a wheel that never stops turning. Polish your act and iron your costume for this night. Bienvenue, Willkommen, Tere Tuelmast to the biggest, the most spectacular: The Greatest Show on Earth!

Week 4: The crazy World of the Holy GrailFriday 30th July 2010, 9 p.m.

Are you one of the Knights of the Round Table or are you one of the Villians? Sir Lancelot the Brave or The Black Knight? Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot or The Legendary Black Beast of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh. Get your horses saddled, polish your sword and shield and prepare yourself for an enormous adventure. The Grail is said to be in a castle, hidden in the wilderness, guarded by Fisher King. The Lady of the Lake might be able to help you, just as she helped King Arthur with his sword. You may ask the magician Merlin who has the power to make wonders or harm. King Arthur’s armor rustles in the forest of Herräng, accompanied by roaring voices of the brave knights. Come, do your best to find The Holy Grail. It is said to be open to anyone that is worthy enough to find it!

Week 5: Noah's Ark
 Friday 6th August 2010, 9 p.m.

An enormous flood is on its way to destroy the Mecca of Lindy Hop. A large vessel needs to be built. There are detailed instructions for the ark. Both male and female from each species needs to get on the ark to keep the representation of the world's animals. Giraffes, elephants, monkeys and donkeys. Snails, frogs, lindy hoppers and mosquitoes. So, if you are a donkey, cross your fingers that there won't be too many other donkeys. If you are a mosquito you might have to do more than just crossing fingers, your space in the ark might already be taken. Come and take part of what might be the journey of your life.

The Herrang Dance Camp is an experience every Lindy Hopper should not miss. At least this Yehoodistrator thinks so!

Those sound like awesome themes! Last time I went, they nixed the themes which was quite lame in comparison to the usual (fantastic) ruckus that gets created . Just wish I could make it this year! I hope to see photos somewhere....

Dammit, wish I was there for Week 2!

Now I gotta figure out how to dress like a meerkat or an ocelot.
