Hey everyone

We might be moving to anywhere between Los Gatos, CA and San Francisco, CA for work.

I know San Francisco has (understatement!) a thriving Lindy scene, but I wanted to know about other cities in that area - Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, San Jose, Los Gatos, Palo Alto etc. Are there good scenes in these places too? In other words, if I do want to dance once/twice each week and dance well - which of the above mentioned places would be good to live in (other than San Francisco, obviously)?

We'd appreciate any input here!

Thanks! SLD

Well, personally, I'd try to live in SF rather than the South Bay. Much more dynamic and interesting.

But if you're going to be working in Silicon Valley and don't want a long commute, I believe Carla Heiney teaches classes and hosts events in Redwood City.

Looks like there is Wednesday night dancing in Mountain View, too. So, if you lived in Palo Alto or Menlo Park, you'd be about midway between those two venues (about 6-7 miles from each).

The beauty of the SF Bay Area scene is people are willing to drive up 1.25 hours each way from Sacramento, Santa Cruz the far East Bay, etc, to dance. I drive 30-40 minutes from Marin County to dance multiple times a week. We Californians, for better or for worse, have cars, and we drive them.

It will end up being a mix of factors: job location, attractiveness of where you're actually living, and drive times. The best weekly dances are in SF itself.

Drive on...

Incase you haven't seen this link : http://www.lindylist.com/

This page lists pretty much every weekly Lindy + Bal event (there are a few Blues events) in the Bay Area. Note that some of the venues listed are not official dances per se, but bars/restaurants that have live music and dancers often come to dance and socialize. There are official dances on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday(not sure why the Saturday venue is not listed), Sunday

Outside of the actual city of SF, there are only three venues that I know of:

Carla has a Saturday venue in Burlingame (just south of SFO)but presently it is not weekly but once to twice a month. Carla also puts on special dances/workshops throughout the year that are usually stationed either in Burlingame or San Francisco.

As Catlike pointed out, the other venue is Wednesday Night Hop, located in Mt. View just off highway 101.

There is also a dance in Oakland, but that doesn't fit the "Peninsula" region.

All these venues have different atmospheres and can have very different circles of dancers depending on the night - meaning, dancers you see at one venue, you may not see at others, not a hard and fast rule though. I think this is a part of having a large [from what I hear] scene and many nights of dancing available. Of course, the more hardcore you are, the more often you will dance weekly and the more venues you will need to attend.

Besides the official dances, there are MANY opportunities to dance to live music in the Bay Area if you are able to bring your own dancers. - that's another topic I guess.

Like Catlike, I would choose to live in SF if you job/life lets you and since most of the dancing is in the city.
