Saturday, August 28, 2010–Sunday, August 29, 2010

Yes, you've been reading all about it in the New York Times, Time Out, Metro, nbc.com, metromix...and most importantly on Facebook....and you want to do it again...or FINALLY come out and join us?

The next Hot Jazz Lawn Party hosted by Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra is coming up SOON on August 28/29th, 11am to 5pm, both days. Where? The historic and halcyon Governors Island in New York harbor.

More info to come, but just know that the fabulous program from July will be repeated because we can't get enough of this basically.

Live hot jazz, dancing on a smooth wooden dancefloor, dance demos and lessons, pie recipe contest, parade of hats, Bathing Beauties and Beaux stroll, vintage cars, tug o war, etc etc. Vintage or 1920s-inspired attire encouraged.

Stay tuned!

This music is not too fast; you're just too damn slow.

Ok, seriously...this is going to be killer...and the forecast is amazing. DRY and 85 sat, 88 sunday. Again, DRY!

Michael Arenella has developed a very full, non-stop schedule of offerings both days and here are my two special sartorial notes:

    A) The Parade of Hats is Saturday during one of Drew Nugents's sets..(after 3pm) No need to sign up, just jump in and stroll. so if you are going to come saturday, PLEASE bring a vintage-looking hat of some sort and join us!

    B) Sunday at about the same time, we're doing a Bathing Beauties and Beaux Promende. Voon and I are coordinating this, and David Liston is emceeing. we're especially hoping for a concentration of vintage looks from the 20s through 40s or solidly-inspired by those decades. Voon is gathering a bit of info about each outfit and participant, and will be intertaining and painless. EACH participant gets a FREE drink ticket, by the way. For more details, please see our the dedeicated FB page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=143441679022866&ref=ts

Seems like this massive Rap festival is also happening on Governor's Island on Saturday - so if you're planning to be there on Saturday, you might want to take the earlier ferry! Their event is advertised to start at 2pm, with doors opening at 12noon!

What a terrific event! I just received that same info from Gov's Island, Lynn- lots going on on the island!

Also, the event has been free in the past, and the email says you must have a ticket to attend the Hot Jazz Lawn Party- $10 a day. Not that this is a deterrant (I am not complaining!) but folks should know.

yeah I am tempted to go to both, but probably too ambitious. And what to wear that would work? Maybe my pimp suit.

Yeah, the government pulled the funding on Governor's Island ... go figure. So Michael has taken it on his shoulders to keep this event going, funding it upfront (with the help of a few fundraisers and sponsors), buying a dance floor, etc. Michael's website has a link for advance tickets at a discount.

    <

p>The ferry is free! If you want access to the dance floor, the expanse of grass between the trees, the vendors (vintage clothing and goodies, food and drinks are available) and want to get up close and personal to the band, you have to pay to get in ($10 on the day - $7 in advance) - still one of the best deals in the city! But if you just want to picnic by the houses on the side, and enjoy the soft sounds and gentle sights, you can do that for free!

Thanks for bringing up the fee. Although the ferry ride remains free, Michael has no funding from Governors Island to produce any of this, and that's NOT actually a new situation. It's been two years since this event was free. And we had a vast amount of public discussion about it last year on yehoodi and FB...but it's always useful to remind people.

The great news is that this fairly nominal admission fee ($10 a day or $7 online in advance per day) makes all the difference in the world, and the event offerings remain at a very high level, in fact, somewhat expanded (TWO lives bands, for starters).

As always, Michael Arenella's website and FB pages are excellent and direct sources of info:

And, for your convenience, here is the ferry schedule from Manhattan and Brooklyn. From Manhattan, it starts at 10am, but service runs every half hour (yay!) from 11am onward.

Good news! Michael says they are laying on additional ferries for this other concert on Saturday. And while it starts at 2pm, the big name crowd pullers will be performing later in the evening.

I dropped by this on Sunday for the first time! Very pleasant chilling out on the blanket and observing all of you in your vintage clothing. I made my attempts to capture the spirit of the time sans true vintage clothes! Thanks, Charles for the peabody dance. I liked that! Left for the Norma Miller film at the Schomburg Center which was also awesome.
