As some of you know, I'm finishing up my first young adult fiction novel, Eyes in the Mirror, to be published by Sourcebooks, Inc next July. A number of people have asked for updates, and I figured I would rather have a thread going that I can update once in a while than bombard other people's threads with self-serving posts related to my book.
I'll add information as I have it, including Facebook pages (http://bit.ly/EitMonFB) and Twitter (twitter.com/eyesinthemirror) which I would love for you to join if you're interested in continuing to hear about the book.
Right now, Sourcebooks is running a vote on cover art. To see and/or sign up and vote, go to http://bit.ly/bQylQZ. You get very few emails from Sourcebooks, and by voting, you're also entered to win a free copy of any Sourcebooks book.
I'm excited about this, so I wanted to share with everyone, feel free to ask questions, repost, or completely ignore.

In the interest of not annoying too many people, I haven't been updating regularly. However! Today is publication day! Eyes in the Mirror is officially released !!! First and foremost: Thank you all for all of your help during this process- I can't believe the book is really here!! The dance community has been so supportive and excited- I cannot express how much it has meant to me.
Now the pitch- if you haven't, you can still order your copy through an independent bookstore near you or on Amazon. If you have the inkling and time, you can also review the book wherever you bought it after reading.
I also wanted to share this exciting news with you: Teen Vogue chose Eyes in the Mirror as one of the top 25 reads for this summer! You can see Eyes in the Mirror (and the other 24 books) HERE.
New Yorkers: Looking for something to do pre-Fram on August 18th? (I know how you plan...) Looks like there will be an event from 6-8pm- hold the date, details to follow.

Julia, I just tried to request your novel from the NYPL, and it's not in their catalog! I'm hoping that sentence can be finished with "yet" :-) -- do you know if there are plans to make it available in the library? Would be great for teens (and adults) as a summer read! I don't know what part of PR and distribution handles libraries, so I thought I'd ask in case it wasn't yet on your publishers' radar, though that's unlikely. :-)

Julia Mayer, presented by 826NYC
Start: 11/15/2011 7:00 pm
Location:
WORD Bookstore
126 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, NY 11222
Julia Mayer’s journey from struggling writer to published author began the
summer she was sixteen. Start with an amazing workshop program supported by
bestselling author Dave Eggers, add an editor who wouldn’t give up on a
great story, and voila! Eyes in the Mirror follows two girls -- the same
person, but living in alternate worlds -- who discover a way to switch
places. That one small decision changes both teenagers’ lives and destinies
forever. Facebook RSVP appreciated!
I hope you'll be able to make it (and if you haven't purchased a copy
yet and want to, consider waiting and purchasing it at the event!). It would be great to
have all of your friendly faces there.

Julia this is absolutely awesome. Congratulations on your success. I wanted to ask out of curiosity, did you ever consider self-publishing before you were selected by Sourcebooks? I ask because there's been something of a boomlet of online self-published content, but I know a stigma exist against that form of publishing. I wanted to get your opinion. Best of luck to you.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond- thanks!
I never particularly considered self publishing because I wasn't thinking much about publication before Sourcebooks approached me. I think theoretically self publishing is a great idea, and gets a lot of great work out there for people. But in terms of the "wow" factor- people tend to be about 20% impressed that I wrote and finished a book and 80% impressed that it was good enough to get published. It's bizarre to me since for me the work part of the book was in writing it and editing it, not in the actual publication but that's the impression I get when I tell people about it.
I'm not sure if that answered your question or not, but hopefully it helped!

Just a - bump - if you are considering coming to the reading/signing on Tuesday, please do!! I would love to see your friendly faces there!
If that's not incentive enough, there'll be snacks and (non-alcoholic) drinks and funhouse mirrors to play with!
