i'm visiting NY this coming weekend and looking to see if there is anywhere to go dancing. Something with a live band or a lesson before would be great but anything would do. I'm arriving late Thur. (Aug 19-Aug31) night and leaving on Tue.

No mystery. This weekend, vast numbers of us are going down to the International Lindy Hop Championships (ILHC) in Washington DC, a buzzworthy, high-quality event that has been on calendars for a full year. It was huge last year, and that will be the case this weekend.
Additionally, weekend events in NYC tend to be monthly (Remix, Wit's End, Swing and Salsa) and are of a special event type. The more permanent weekly stuff falls on weeknights, where it's not a special event each time but a dependable repeat booking....Vince Giordano, George Gee, and of course Frim Fram.

BUT, you're in luck if you are indeed staying through the next weekend, as you'll hit a major NYC event for the summer: Michael Arenlla's Hot jazz Lawn Party on Governors Island, August 28 and 29th.

Also, If you're a fan of blues, there's a JookJoint Shimmy Blues event on Saturday night, and a 3 hour workshop that afternoon, taught by Jenny Sowden and Dan Repsch.

The wife and I are in NYC for the next few days (Aug 27th-29th). Are there any "bar type" dancing events that go on? Basically we are looking for a place to grab a drink, grab a bite and dance a little Lindy and/or Blues. Any suggestions?

For a bar event, tonight there's LES Hot Club at Paddy O'Reilly's, Sunday, there's the Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria, check out the calendar for details. Lots of other stuff going on this weekend at Governor's Island and Club 412. The calendar has all the details, just click on the date.

Well there is Fram on Thursday night at Club 412. We are dancing until 1am, so come out even if you arrive late!

There are facebook event pages for both, the workshop and the dance.
I know the workshop is from 4:00-7:00pm, but I don't know the venue location or the cost.
Intro to Blues Intensive Workshop with Dan and Jenny
The dance is $12 at the door, with a lesson at 9, and the dance goes til 3am, at Connolly's Bar, 121 West 45th St.
