Donating airline credit as a Lindy scholarship

Hey everyone,

I have some soon-to-expire airline credit (less than 45 days) on an airline; this credit is useless to me since this carrier doesn't service my area. I'm thinking of donating it to the global Lindy cause -- it's enough to get a starving Lindy Hopper to a camp or exchange.

I'm thinking of contacting organizers based near one of the airline's hubs. Are there other organizations can help me out? Being somewhat paranoid, it would also be helpful to get some pointers regarding liability issues and other potential logistical headaches.

I'm probably going to get flamed for suggesting this, but for simplicity you might wish to first check if the airline itself has a donations program for people in your shoes. If I recall correctly, American Airlines ran programs for donating miles to military servicemen/women, people who are ailing, or other similar situations.

The airline may also have reward options besides free airline tickets that you can use.

Last thing, I know American Airlines did this, you can frequently buy miles by donating a modest amount to a list of charities they designate, and the benefit of doing so is that all your miles are automatically refreshed. You may also wish to check to see if you have this option.

I think that is a great idea. When I was a starving grad student in a place with no dancing, a friend across the country got me a ticket with his miles so that I could go dancing, and I very much appreciated it (and had a great time dancing!). I can think of a number of poor grad student dancers who would jump at this given the opportunity. Do you know anyone personally who you can think of to give the miles to? If not, I, and others on here I am sure, can think of dancers who would appreciate this. What I think would be the best, if you want to donate them to lindy hoppers, is to give them to someone who teaches at a college scene. Most students don't have the money to splurge on going to big dance events (heck, when I was a student, I literally had to scrape together coins I found to get into the local dances), and benefit a lot when one or two people who teach them go off, learn, and teach the new material when they come back. That is how we did it, and it worked great. Same goes for people in isolated, smaller scenes.

What airline are your miles for?

What you might want to do is see if there is a workshop weekend or camp in the next month in a city where there is a hub of the airline, and tell the organizers you'd like to 'sponsor' someone by donating the miles. I promise you they will get snatched up, and you will certainly be forever loved for your generosity!

Also, I am not a lawyer, but I don't think there are liability issues here. As far as logistics... not sure.

I know so many college students that distance is a reason they can't travel events, its not even funny.

If you did this you would be providing a great service for the Lindy Hop community!

I'm not sure of the exact rules and regulations, which I'm sure vary from airline to airline, but...

I'm pretty sure you can't just transfer miles. They're intended to be used by the original flier. The only way I know of this working is if you have enough miles to cover an entire ticket, and then you'd have to do the transaction through your account. (For example a friend used Delta miles to buy my ticket to Y10A.) I don't think you can just "donate" or transfer miles, unless it's through a special program. I think you need to call the airline and get the requirements from them.
