I know, it's a picture of the website you are on. Very recursive...
On January 4, 2010, Yehoodi entered a new chapter in our history with a whole new website, built from the ground up. Our goal was to make sure that our site continued to serve the lindy hop community through providing necessary news and information , helping people find dance events anywhere in the world , point people to relevant swing resources and businesses , and host interesting conversations about anything under the sun.
Yehoodi 3.0 got us much closer to all of those goals, but also inspired a lot of passionate conversations about what you wanted the site to do. Over the past several months, we’ve listened to your feedback, gone back to the drawing board, and made a number of modifications to the site. The result is Yehoodi 3.1.
I should say that this is not a radically new departure from Yehoodi 3.0. Essentially, we’ve added a fancy new paint job, changing the way the site looks, while retaining all of the features from the January launch. At the same time, we’ve added a bunch of cool new features that bring Yehoodi into the social media / social networking age in a big way.
Here’s a rundown of the major changes you will see in this version:
A New Look, But Still Hep to the Jive
As you know, Yehoodi has proudly been the orange-iest website on the internet for a long time now. As Spuds will recount to you, we drew our design inspiration from one of our favorite albums which we have tried to remain true to over the various versions of our site. But for 2010, our frontend web specialist Poke Alex convinced us that we should revamp the entire color scheme and layout of the site to make it easier to read, more inviting, and easier to navigate.
We are very pleased with Alex's work on this, and hope that you are too.
I Tube, You Tube, We All Tube for YouTube: Embedded Media!
Yehoodites LOVE to post their favorite pictures, share their swing video clips, and talk about what music they want to dance to. Now inserting into your posts videos, photos and even music clips is as easy clicking a button and copying and pasting a link. And for you web-geeks out there, you can do all sorts of fancy format stuff with HTML.
Head to these popular threads to try out the new features:
Massive social networks like Facebook and Twitter are amazing tools for connecting with folks, sharing news and what ice-cream flavor you are eating right now! Now if you like something you see on Yehoodi -- whether it be an event, a funny video, or a heated debate about blues dancing -- you can easily share this with your friends on Facebook or Twitter with just the push of a button.
Oh and don't forget to follow Yehoodi on Facebook and Twitter!
Markdown Makes Your Posts 'Mo Prettier
Adding formatting, links and lists to your posts has never been easier with our entirely new text editor called “Markdown.” No more cutecats.com or I’M PISSED OFF! . Markdown has a lot of easy to remember formatting shortcuts, like “**” before and after your text to make it bold or a dash and a space to make a bullet list.
The markdown menu bar has a lot of pre-set tools that you can use to embed media, format, and style up your post about that one guy who never wears deodorant. You know who I’m talking about. We'll post some tutorial videos on how to use Markdown soon.
Other New Stuff
There’s a bunch of other neat stuff you will discover on the site, including:
A More Informative Front Page: See a quick snapshot of what’s going on across the site, who’s on it now, who’s birthday it is, and of course all our featured news up top.
More Efficient Discussion Views: We revamped both the “collapsed” and the “expanded” view of discussions on the site, so that you can get all of the info you want in a concise format, or see a small preview of what each topic is about.
More Info about Your Fellow Yehoodites: When you are reading posts, you can now easily scan each avatar to see where they live, who is a leader or follower, how many posts they have, and whether they are online or not. You will see a little green dot in the lower right corner of their avatar to indicate that they are on the site RIGHT THIS SECOND! (I know, it’s spooky.)
An Easter Egg: The first person to discover the "Easter Egg" on Yehoodi, and email us about it to support@yehoodi.com gets a free admission to Frim Fram!
We hope you like the new site. Major kudos to Poke Alex for all the pretty stuff on the front end and Spuds for all the secret sauce on the backend. And of course to all of you for continuing to support for these past 12 years!
If something is confusing you, head to the FAQ to see if we have your question answered there. Drop us a comment in the Support section to tell us how you feel about the new site, ask questions... and if -- gasp! -- something doesn’t work right.

Oh man. I'm really liking this new site. The web technology is great. This is brilliant.
Perhaps I will have more time to be on Yehoodi and continue to share and discuss like I used to do on this website. With the new look and feel, it would be a great way to catch up with people as well.
Let's see. There are a few things I can't find, for example "Topics I've posted on", "My Most Recent Posts". Maybe I just have to dig more for that functionality. What I do love... is the new Yehoodi Calendar. :)

Okay thanks Rik.
So I was an old old (medium old?) Yehoodi user, and maybe this feedback might not go well with the new setup. But there were some things I enjoyed about it. I also have a new feature suggestion. Sorry if these suggestions might have come too late. I just haven't been on Yehoodi much, and I'm trying to get back into it.
List Of Topics I Posted In, Sorted By Latest Post
Along with a laundry list of all my posts that I currently see, Yehoodi used to have a nice feature that grouped posts by topics (and quick links to go to the last post of the thread). It's sort of like having the google "conversations" feature, making your laundry list -- instead of being 997 messages which I have -- would be more like the laundry list of topics you posted on, sorted based on the latest post you made on that topic (which might be in the 150 topics range)...
New Feature? My Yehoodi Page
When you login, you get to see a section that's about 5-6 rows long below the header, with a list of topics that you've posted in last (something like "My Recent Topics"). Some of these posts might have been updated by others. Having it this way makes Yehoodi more relevant to the user. I suppose I can bookmark all the topics I've posted in, but I wouldn't think to automatically do so. So "My Recent Topics" 5-6 rows and "My Bookmarks" 5-6 rows side by side and below the header, might also do well...
Ah wait, it can be also like a "My Recent Topics" tab, like the "Bookmarks" tab. That would work as well and maybe wouldn't require much of a change in implementation (?)...
Anyway... er... food for thought as I post on Yehoodi from Istanbul at 1AM in the morning. But I really like the coloring and look-and-feel of the post editor I'm using now and the quickness of the automatic post preview.
You know the feature I most like in Version 3.1 is the ability to now go all the way back to the very beginning (i.e., view... all-time), when Yehoodi was just hatched and a fledgling chick. I tip my egg...er.. hat to the developers. You guys are All Reet. I hereby transfer my free Fram entry to RubyMae.
Is that all there is, is that all there is?

Spud, thanks for commenting on the feature.
There's one more thing I noticed, since I just used it. The light-cream colored bookmark button on every forum topic on the right side of the page -- along with the email, report, and vote buttons -- seem to be very very faint. I barely noticed that I could use them.
Perhaps as a suggestion, you might want to make those buttons a little more pronounced, maybe by making the shade much darker. It's pretty well understood that it's an outline. And then when you click the button, color is added, so it's noticeable when I actually "bookmark" the forum topic.

First, the new yehoodi kicks major ass. I'm lovin' it. But only one thing that I would like to request, and perhaps this is something I'm doing wrong on my end, but I think it's on your end. I use a netbook as my primary computer, and the old yehoodies seemed to resize to fit my 10 in. screen. The new, totally awesomer yehoodie, doesn't, so for every single post of I have to scroll back and forwards to read anything. Which isn't so much fun.
Aside from that, it's great.

I like the "My Yahoodi" idea too. Maybe a short-term feature in that direction would be to automatically bookmark threads you reply to? Maybe as a user config option?
As a side note, is it just me or has Yehoodi seen a lot more discussion traffic since the 3.1 launch? Nice!
