On this very day back in 1911, Roy Eldridge, jazz trumpeter was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Nicknamed "Little Jazz", Mr Eldridge started out playing trumpet and drums in carnival and circus bands. Before long, he was playing with the likes of Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, all the rest of Count Basie's Orchestra and Ella Fitzgerald. His sophisticated use of harmony, his soloing and his influence on Dizzy Gillespie mark him as one of the most exciting musicians of the swing era and a precursor of bebop. Mr Eldridge can been seen in the Great Day in Jazz photo, having Dizzy stick his tongue at'em.
