The Frankie Manning Lindy Hop Ambassador Scholarship Program
A Frankie Manning Legacy Fund Project
THE FRANKIE MANNING LINDY HOP LEGACY FUND
The mission of the Frankie Manning
Legacy Fund is to preserve and promote
the rich cultural, choreographic and
artistic legacy of Frankie Manning and
to encourage the world-wide
proliferation and promotion of the
music and the dance Frankie loved so
much (Swing Music and the Lindy Hop).
In accordance with Manning’s own
values, and those of the Savoy
Ballroom where the dance got its
start, the fund seeks to promote
projects which are grounded in unity
and collaboration, and which enable
people of all different backgrounds to
participate in this joyous dance.
The Frankie Manning, Lindy Hop Ambassador Scholarship Mandate:
To empower exceptional students of Lindy Hop who come from communities that have little or no exposure to Lindy Hop so that they may take what they learn back to their community of origin to help the spread of Lindy Hop.
The successful candidate will demonstrate great desire, natural ability and leadership qualities but may not have access to learning resources or the financial means to pursue and develop their dancing to its full potential.
Specifically, recipients will come from one of the following two groups:
The African-American/Black community; In his final years Frankie Manning enjoyed tremendous satisfaction from the global spread of Lindy Hop but always felt some regret at how relatively few African-Americans dance the Lindy Hop today; Frankie had a strong desire to see more African-American young people involved, particularly since it was the African-American community that played such an important role in giving birth to this dance.
New geographical representation; As part of his passion for the world domination of Lindy Hop, Frankie loved nothing more than learning that Lindy Hop had caught on in some new part of the world, be it Argentina or Lithuania. Recipients may come from an area where Lindy Hop is not danced or where it is in a very early stage of adoption and development.
In the future the Fund intends to finance a whole range of learning opportunities for those that are awarded scholarships; however, initially it intends to provide scholarships to attend Herrang Dance Camp in Sweden during July of 2011.
The Herräng Dance Camp is the world’s most comprehensive dance camp focusing on African American Jazz Dances from the Golden Age of Jazz. Located approximately 2 hours from Stockholm, Sweden, this international camp has been in operation since 1982 and is an annual celebration of Lindy Hop and swing dancing traditions.
The scholarship may include any or all of the following:
Two to five weeks at The Herräng Dance Camp. This may involves some volunteer responsibilities on alternate weeks or other breaks from the rigors of class schedule. This is recommended to maximize the learning experience.
Assistance with round-trip transportation from your hometown to the Herräng, Sweden camp
Meal tickets for your weeks at Camp
A small stipend for personal expenses
Successful candidates are remarkable Lindy Hoppers who:
are passionate and driven
demonstrate an unwavering desire for excellence; to learn and grow
exhibit outstanding leadership abilities within the community with a special focus on outreach to newcomers to the Lindy Hop community
are driven to perpetuate Lindy Hop by spreading their own knowledge and inspiring others with their passion
are dedicated to the historic authenticity of Lindy Hop dancing and music
value the close relationship between the music and the dance
believe in maintaining a true community among dancers based on mutual respect and a cooperative spirit
