On Thursday, May 12th, Megan Hornbecker is organizing an "Old School" night at The 9:20. For those of you that don't know, The 9:20 Special started in 1998 and there are dancers in the Bay Area who have been dancing since the very beginning. Many of them don't come out dancing as much as they used to (if at all) because, as we all know, life and priorities change over the years. BUT, Megan has decided to bring back as many of these "old school" dancers as possible. Of course, EVERYONE is invited - even if you just started dancing last month. The 9:20 Special is San Francisco's Premiere Thursday Night Swing Dance Party that has been a staple of the San Francisco Dance scene since 1998. Originally started by internationally renowned Lindy Hop instructors Paul and Sharon as a practice party for their students, the 9:20 quickly evolved into the most popular spot to go dancing in the Bay Area. Today the 9:20 Special regularly draws crowds of 120+ dancers a week and is known as one of the most friendly, fun, and casual dances in the Bay Area.
From January 2004 through April 2009, the 9:20 Special was run by Jeff Ho, a long time 9:20 volunteer and supporter, and Manu Smith, International Lindy Hop Instructor and cofounder of Yehoodi.com.
In April, Jeff and Manu decided to hand the reins over to an enthusiastic Lindy Hopper by the name of Kirk Tarou. Kirk has a staff which includes new and familiar faces: Manu Smith as an Advisor, Nicole Frydman as Education Coordinator, Iris Dolowitz as Social [Media] Butterfly, Rich Werden as Master of all things Web, Laurie Caird as Designer, Catherine Porter as Promotions Assistant, and Breanne Simmons as Volunteer Coordinator.
Every month The 9:20 Special has nationally acclaimed DJ Jesse Miner as well as many talented local DJs such as Manu Smith, Roy Rydbeck, Hep Jen, Shane Promtet, Eddie Gutman, Naomi Walenta and top DJs from around the nation spinning your favorite music on a weekly basis.
Every week we offer Beginner, Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced classes followed by a social dance in our big, beautiful ballroom.
