We interrupt this discussion about boring cars to bring you breaking news about....possibly purchasing a boring car.

I'm in the market for a new (or maybe gently used) car, and I'm a Honda loyalist on a budget. I'll start by test driving 2010 Civics in the coming days.

For the life of me, I can't tell any real difference between the EX and LX. The EX is more 'spensive. Why, Brainy Car People, why???

The Honda Grand Prix is six miles from where I live. I'm inside and I have the windows closed. I can hear the cars.

It wasn't a discussion about boring cars until you brought Civics up, ha!

What the EX has that the LX doesn't (or, what you get for $1,845 more):

Rear disc brakes. Alloy wheels. Sun roof. More windshield wiper speeds. Rear cup holders. Rear seatback pocket. Rear armrest. Additional 12volt plug. Steering wheel audio controls. 60/40 split folding rear seats. Slightly better sound system. USB plug. Exterior temperature sensor. Available navi.

Actually, I'm eyeing the 2010 Insight Hybrid! It gets good reviews and it's actually within reach for me. I didn't think there was a hybrid that was.

This is my first new car and my first time negotiating a large purchase. Even though I'm armed with all the advice and strategies I could possibly need, I'm not looking forward to it. I can be good at pushy, I can be good at persistent, but not when it comes to money. :-/

Good luck!

Was hoping for a Honda Fit hybrid, but that doesn't look promising with their botching of the new CRX. But for myself I prefer the fit over the civic.

I'm a hatchback driver.

If I find a cherry 2004-2006 insight, that will be my next city/commuter car.

Rear strut mount failure on the M3. Just glad it happened in front of a parking spot that was good for three days.

It's being repaired and I am having four new struts installed as well. Excited to see how that affects handling.

Recently had to return my 2008 Madza MX-5. Replaced with 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon.

I'm a sad panda, but the swagger wagon is damn comfy and filled to the gills with fun tech.

1) The kid came. 2) The lease was up. 3) I had the opportunity to jump on a hard to find wagon in the exact configuration I wanted.

I was very close to just keeping it... but I only have room for two cars, and ultimately, when I do get another fun car, I want something with a little more balls (as fun as the MX-5 was.)

Funny you should mention this... cause I've been thinking a nice used Boxster S would be nice.

Today I finally test Drove a Fiat 500 stick.

Flickr Pic

Out of the 25+ cars the Fiat dealer in Larchmont only had 3 that were manual!

I like it a thousand times better than smart, nissan, yaris, hyundia offerings in the same hatchback configuration. It was quiet, felt rather solid, even a bit on the weighted side while driving. Engine noise was not a penalty box. I didn't get to take it on the highway unfortunately, so at 5000rpm it had a nice none econobox sound.

Prices seemed to be 17 to 21.

I'm going to wait and see how the build quality is though. Its the same plant that made PT Cruisers. And I've never been a chrysler fan. So for me to plunk down my money on this car I have to be completely sold on its quality and service.

The downside for me is the nearest dealer to the finger lakes in in Albany.

As comparision to the mini. You sit higher up. The windows give you a good view. The black interiors felt a bit small. The mini felt more centered, I had more confidence hammering the minis I drove then this. It definitely has a higher profile. Pricing makes me see that the top end Fiat is where the mini starts. Every mini I configure always puts me in the 22-24k range. At 24 I'm in TDI Golf territory, which is the car that is out of my budget but sets the standards for the others.

Fit and finish were very good on the ones I looked at. The spare tire is an option for 100. And its under the car. Not impressed by that. The engine compartment was tight, but all fluids and battery were easy to reach.

EPA highway says 38 highway, which means hopefully if I drove it I should turn over 40 (as I'm not a fast driver).

The dealer I went to was in Larchmont, and we happened upon their new showroom in the construction process, no one said get out. The current showroom was down the street. Everyone was rather nice, no hard sell. I hope they do well. As I love small cars. And we'll see what happens after the summer and what I do when it comes time to make a new car decision. I wish the Mazda 2 was a 2 door hatch with the skyactiv engine now, that would be my top contender for my daily commuter. The lowly 35 mpg and 4 doors turned me off (whatever I buy has to do better than my vw's current 34).

This past weekend I had my first opportunity to flog my new wagon on a stretch of road that often shows up on "best driving roads in America" lists. While my MX-5 was much more fun on this road, I still came away pretty impressed by the wagon's abilities. I wrote up a brief entry about the drive here: Jive Junction - A Sunday Angeles Crest Highway Run

After my drive up ACH I'm seriously considering giving the wagon to my wife and replacing her car with a new Mustang GT... maybe even a Boss 302. It has a back seat a kid can fit in, and it's big enough for me to be comfortable (I just barely fit in the MX-5, and I have a feeling that was contributing to my back issues.) Got to enjoy the rest of the dino juice while it lasts.

What a job they did on that new Mustang in terms of performance.

What's the deal with the Boss version?
