Went to a lovely party on Shelter Island this weekend. The host has an estate on the water with octagonal-themed architecture.

Anyhow, he's got a convertible M3 in the (octagonal) garage. This is a car of high interest to me, so I ask him about he's experience with it. Turns out he has a 400 pony M5 as well with money down on the upcoming V-10 500 pony M5. Which he will let someone else have if the M6 is released.

What's the deal with the M6? Anyone know?

HOLY SMOKES!!! 0-60 in 2.5 seconds!!! A viper on two wheels!!! I have found my nirvana!!! http://autoshow.msn.com/autoshow2003/article.aspx?xml=DCXConcepts odge Lets Loose Three Concepts Tomahawk concept motorbike Dodge Avenger and Kahuna Designers within the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler are working under a new manifesto: every vehicle, no matter what its desired purpose, must deliver an emotionally satisfactory experience. The three concepts unveiled today are examples of this edict. Before bringing the newest concepts to center stage, Wolfgang Bernard, COO Chrysler Group, pointed out the details of a vehicle that made its debut last week in Los Angeles. The Magnum SRT-8 sports a supercharged 430-horsepower HEMI V8 engine with rear-wheel drive performance. Referred to as the new shape of American muscle, this high-performance concept can haul plenty of cargo, and when it goes into production it will represent the first application of Mercedes-Benz technology in a high volume mainstream Chrysler product. Trevor Creed, senior vice president of design for the Chrysler Group, rode onstage inside the first of three concepts to debut. The Dodge Avenger Concept The Dodge Kahuna Concept The Tomahawk Concept Yet. When Dieter Zetsche, president and CEO of the Chrysler Group asked if this vehicle would ever be produced, the response was maybe, which is more than many other automaker execs would have granted.

Can somebody please explain to me the purpose of a concept car? It seems as though the only reason automakers have these is to show off what they can do and then refuse to do it (possibly with a bit of maniacal laughter and an ominous soundtrack).

I've been looking at the Saturn SKY for a while, hoping for its evenutal production. It received rave reviews and seemed to be a great form-plus-function inexpensive convertible. But there's been no word of any production since the 2002 concept.

So are concept cars just a "Neener neener neener" on the part of the automakers? :dunno:

The Shelby Club Meet was held this weekend at Infineon Raceway (formerly Sears Point). I lost count of Cobras after a dozen, and that was just driving around NorCal. Taken Sunday (and that's no replica):

If you haven't already, get your windows VIN-etched. Most police departments have a government funded program to do it for free, or you can get a kit to do it yourself for 15-20. Insurance companies offer a discount of 3-15 on auto insurance for VIN-etched cars.

More importantly, the risk of having your car stolen is significantly lower with VIN-etched windows. In NYC alone, statistics show that theft rates are 7.1 for automobiles without VIN-etched windows, versus less than .7 for cars VIN-etched by the NYPD. Car theives know it will cost a few thousand dollars to replace all the windows on a stolen car, so it's easier to move on to another target then bother with one that has been etched.

New York State sponsors a program called "Watch Your Car", and you can have your windows etched for free under this program. Police also place a Warning sticker on the driver window and windshield warning potential thieves that windows have been etched.

ARDMORE, Pa. - Where do you hide a 729,000 Ferrari during rush hour? That's what police in the Philadelphia suburbs want to know, after a con man drove off with a red Ferrari F50 during a test drive.

The Ferrari F50 which can hit 60 mph in less than 4 seconds and tops out at 203 mph hasn't been seen since.

Police theorize it was hustled into a trailer and quickly shipped overseas for sale on the black market.

The company made just 349 of the eye-popping Italian roadsters described by one car-enthusiast Web site as "part Batmobile, part ballistic missile" in 1995 to commemorate its 50th anniversary. It was designed to be a street version of a Formula One race car.

The thief, a nattily dressed man who claimed he had flown up from Atlanta and had a limo waiting nearby, took the test drive Sept. 16 without producing a license. The ID, he said, was in the wallet he had left at the airport.

The salesman from Algar Ferrari in Rosemont first took the prospective buyer for a spin, then let him get behind the wheel. During the test drive, the man clean-cut and sporting a shirt, tie and apparent Rolex watch pulled to the side of the road and asked the salesman to drive back to the dealership.

When the salesman got out, the thief sped off.

Police were summoned, but never spotted the vehicle. Now they're looking for the con man, described as a 6-foot, slender white male with reddish-brown hair and glasses.

Lower Merion detectives believe he had help.

"This took a lot of planning," said Det. Charles J. Craig, the lead investigator.

Police are also exploring whether the case is tied to similar Ferrari thefts in North Carolina and Long Island, N.Y.

Last race of the season is at Suzuka:

That track is extremely technical - I've driven it a bunch of times (in simulation of course) - far more interesting that Indianapolis (sorry guys) :)

My current plan is keep driving the 97 Intrepid through the winter, then replace it in the spring. I was planning on replacing it with my mother's super low mileage 98 Concorde LXi...but I think I just found my new car, the Toyota Scion xA and xB. Available in California now, east coast Feb. 2004, Midwest June 2004.

I'm more apt to go for the xA, the curvier of the two models shown below. The xB is just too, well, ugly for my tastes!

Look at all the standard features on an under 13K car!!!! (Auto is 800 extra on both models.)

Price: 12,965-14,165 MSRP (includes delivery charge, no extra dealer processing charges!)

Standard Equipment:

Air Conditioner Power Windows (with one-touch Auto Down on driver's window) Power Door Locks Power Outside Mirrors Rear Window Defogger Tilt-Steering Wheel Column Cargo Area Cover Tachometer and Trip Meter Sport Front Bucket Seats with Fabric Upholstery Cargo Area Under-floor Storage 60/40 Split Folding Rear Seat Intermittent Front Wipers Rear Wiper Chrome Exhaust Tip Rocker Panel extensions Pioneer AM/FM/CD Head Unit (MP3 and Satellite controller capable) Scion Sound Processing 6-Speakers (including 2 tweeters) Driver and Passenger Front Airbags Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) First Aid Kit

Scion Complimentary Oil Change Promotion: Scion is currently offering three complimentary oil changes as part of your vehicle's standard service features.

Very popular with the 18-29 crowd in japan, where they have been in production for several years, and have a large share of the Japanese market. More pics:

Well I just watched the qualifying sessions for Suzuka on Speed - looks like there is still a small window open for the championship - Michael got burned by the rain late in the session and qualified 14th. So it's not a given he is going to finish in the points. Of course, Raikkonen only qualified 10th I think, and with Barichello taking the pole, he might have a pretty tough time winning the race anyway. Still, you can always hope.

Race starts, 1am EST.

Well, unfortunately there weren't quite enough breaks to prevent Schumacher from taking the title - although it did look interesting there for a while. Montoya died with hydraulic problems after it was clear he had a way superior pace to everyone else, and Alonzo blowing up. But there weren't quite enough strokes of luck to get McLaren into first. Oh well, at least the drivers championship was close this year.

Did anyone else watch the race?

Missed it.

Heading over the 59th St Bridge's Upper Roadway yesterday early morning, I came upon the first of two blind turns just before it releases you on Queens. I was side by side with a Galant.

It's an elevated ramp with two lanes and zero shoulder just two "Jersey walls" bordering it so you don't flip and fall. As we approached the bend side by side at about 30MPH a car came upon us, heading straight at us...IN THE WRONG DIRECTION! It was impossible to see he had wandered on to the ramp in the wrong direction. We all braked hard and he stopped a foot before the Galant.

The driver was stunned and I keep signaling with my hands that he needed to turn around. Cars we all getting on their brakes behind us to stop. Finally the guy does a 10 point turn and we all get outta there.

I was in an SUV and it was SCARY! I was glad I wasn't on the bike, I'm not sure I would have stopped in time.

Eff,

Please stop telling me these stories. You're starting to scare me.

Saw the GP, but I was unimpressed. About the only highlight for me was watching Schumacher smash his front wing early in the race, drop into the pits to get a replacement, and still finish in 8th place. I love F1, always have, but the changes in recent years to limited aero packages and grooved tires have made it boring to watch. No really close competition.
