......ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ! OK.... I'm pissed. Have you Car Talk thread posters heard about this: (New York-WABC, September 30, 2002) — Drivers will have to think twice before parking illegally in New York City anymore. Starting Tuesday, October 1st, fines for some city parking tickets…

Quoted from "TheCheeta" I was so excited to hear that the R32 was coming here. I really really wish they would offer the higher performance for the Jetta as well. They are the same damn car after you take off the sheet metal, and the Jetta is the best-selling German sedan in America. Why not offer up an R32 Jetta? If they did, I would consider it after the lease on this one runs up. The Jetta has a lot of potential, and is a great looking little car... just needs a little more oomph.
There's still hope. In Europe they at least have a 5-door R32. Aren't they supposed to be bringing back the Jetta GLI too with some performance upgrades?

Can't remember if we ever discussed this: window VIN etching.
My boring snow-day ride is an Accord which is one of the most stolen cars in the US. My local PD etched the glass for free which helps save on insurance to boot (since crooks can't sell the glass to chop shops after they steal it).

From page 4!
Quoted from "newsboy" If you haven't already, get your windows VIN-etched. Most police departments have a government funded program to do it for free, or you can get a kit to do it yourself for 15-20. Insurance companies offer a discount of 3-15 on auto insurance for VIN-etched cars.
More importantly, the risk of having your car stolen is significantly lower with VIN-etched windows. In NYC alone, statistics show that theft rates are 7.1 for automobiles without VIN-etched windows, versus less than .7 for cars VIN-etched by the NYPD. Car theives know it will cost a few thousand dollars to replace all the windows on a stolen car, so it's easier to move on to another target then bother with one that has been etched.
New York State sponsors a program called "Watch Your Car", and you can have your windows etched for free under this program. Police also place a Warning sticker on the driver window and windshield warning potential thieves that windows have been etched.

Chrylser ME 412
From AMG comes a 6.0-liter V-12, with a race-car-style dry-sump lubrication system.
Four turbochargers blowing 20 psi of boost, mounted just behind the two seats.
850 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 850 pound-feet of torque anywhere between 2500 and 4500 rpm
Weight-to-power ratio of 3.5 pounds per horsepower (A Ferrari Enzo burdens each of its 650 horses with five pounds).
Purpose-built seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission from racing-gearbox-maker Ricardo. The tranny's brain uses a variety of sensors to anticipate what gear the driver needs next and preselects it, so it's ready for a seamless trade of power between the two clutches.
Theoretical top speed of 248 mph(<i>drag</i> limited!)
0-to-60-mph sprint of 2.9 seconds
Quarter-mile 10.6 seconds at 142 mph.
That would make the Chrysler faster (by almost 40 mph) and quicker to 60 mph (by 0.4 second) than the Ferrari Enzo.
All yours for just 500,000 (if it goes into production... this is not a concept car, BTW, it is currently a prototype, which makes the likelihood that this car goes into production a lot greater)

So, I saw my first SSR ( on the road )this morning. It was that familiar corvette yellow and I passed it as it was about to pull out of an exit. I kept looking in the mirrors hoping it would pass me doing 120 but it didn't reappear.
I have a love/ hate thing for this retro truck from chevy. I like some of the styling but afetr seeing that sucker close up with Eff, it just screams "cutting corners".

I thought it looked far better on paper... in pictures, you know? The first time I saw it in C&D I was ecstatic! Of course, it was thoroughly useless as a truck or any other form of reasonable transportation, but I figured that since so many other manufacturers were having success with off-beat vehicles, Chevy would do well with the SSR.
I see one occasionally at the dealer down the road from me. Not so impressive in real life... lots of things I would have done differently. I have not examined one up close... but sounds like they didn't do a great job, eh? That is a shame... with Chrysler hopefully hanging its gonads to a wall with the ME 412, and with Ford working on some impressive projects, I was hoping GM would get out of grampa's garage and start putting out some real driving machines. They had SOOOOOO much potential with the GTO, and from what I hear, they missed the mark.
The Caddy sounds like it is doing very well, though. According to a head-to-head comp against the M3 and the M5, it faired much better than I thought any American car would. Natch, the M3 was the best of the bunch WRT outright performance. The M5 and the CTS-V were more refined. And the two bigger cars compared very well on the track and behind the wheel. So well, in fact, that when asked if the 23,000 difference between the M5 and the Caddy was warranted, C&D reviewers gave and emphatic NO! Go Caddy! <a href="http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=3&article_id=7780" target="_blank">Here</a> is the review.

Agreed !
One smart thing that Cadillac did was create cars that appealed to a whole other demographic. They did the smart thing when they got people who never even considered a Cadillac before to buy one. That's the beauty of competition baby !
American car manufacturers used to have so many innovative designs and I hope this is the beginning of a renaissance for them.

The biggest disappointment with the SSR is the price tag, 41,000??? Ouch!
Eff:
Shelby Cobra (probably a Superformance replica)
Next two: Monster Miata (Mustang 5.0 in a Miata)
Early 70's Dodge Barracuda - 426 Hemi motor

I too saw a yellow SSR on the road this week, while out West. I thought back to that fateful day: the cigar shop, those Bimmers, Patsy's and the sushi. G_d, I wish I was young again!

Just get a bike already. For 10 of that price you can easily beat those numbers (well, not the top speed).

But where would you put that smelly chair you just found?

LOL ! Actually, your biggest disaapointment will be the 41 grand plus the extra 10 grand the dealer tacks on as a markup.
And believe me, the dealer always gets the extra 10 grand.
Homie told Swanky and I that they refused an offer that was 5,000 over base. WOW!
It's been interesting watching Caddie completely change their image over the past 20 years.
the M comparisons, be careful: the M3 is being redesigned with a modded M5 V-8, and the M5 is about to appear with a near 550 hp V-10.
