Here's a WiFi puzzle.

I have an iBook running System 10.3.9 with AirPort card and firmware over 5.0.

My landlord installed Verizon FIOS with an Actiontec router.

My Airport card picks up a wireless signal and asks for the password.

Once given, the signal shows up in the menu bar, but I get no Internet.

I check the network tab on the preferences panel and I get the message of a self-assigned IP address and I might not be able to connect to the Internet.

Thoughts?

Do you know for sure that your land lord isn't blocking you somehow? Are you sure you're connecting to the correct network?

You get no internet, but can you connect to the router's configuration page? (usually by entering the following into your web browser: 192.168.1.1)

Well that's your problem right there ;-)

Seriously, was this software installed on your computer? Are you going through it to make a connection?

Frequently, when companies (particularly Verizon) install software on your computer for these types of connections, yet not only are they not needed to connect to internet, they cause boat loads of problems on your computer.

Sometimes you have to install the software to configure the router the first time, but then it can all be stripped.

Are your other computers able to connect to the internet through this router?

I use <a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/osxvnc/">Vine Server</a>. It's dope.

I am definitely getting his router. Even used the right phone number to get through.

I pinged it, but got the error "The Server Took Too Long To Respond."

Verizon didn't give me anything. All my landlord gave me was the password, which seems to work.

My landlord's machine seems to work great.

I've even tried to use the Terminal app to use "sudo" commands, but with no luck. Trashed the AirPort pref file, no go.

AAUGH!

Big Al,

Sounds like you have a fun problem. It could be something with your router.

Things to look into: There may be something creating interference between the router and your computer. The signal may be intermittent and experienced sudden drops. Even though you are seeing the bars, the signal strength may be based on the peak of the signal and not the drop. My girlfriend experiences this all the time.

Here are some troubleshooting suggestions:

  1. If possible, see if you can get another computer to connect to that network from your apartment.

  2. If possible, see if you can connect to another network from your computer as is.

  3. Have your landlord unplug the broadband modem and the router. Then plug in the modem, wait a minute, then plug in the router. Then try to connect.

  4. Reset the Router to defaults and try configuring it again. There could be something in the router configuration that is blocking your particular computer.

FR - for VNC clients, I like Chicken of the VNC - http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/

For the server side of things, I like OSXvnc - http://www.redstonesoftware.com/products/vine/server/vineosx/index.html

I know Chicken of the VNC is free, I think the second one is.

I haven't run VNC in a while so these might be dated tools.

No, PC to Mac. I work in a Windows house and I want to alleviate that a bit.

And yes, I was shooting for Free.

The server app Marcelo refers to is the same one I said, and yes, it's free as in beer.

I defer to Mugsy and Marcelo.

I tend to go from Mac to Mac, or Mac to PC. Never PC to Mac. Though, I have heard good things about chicken of the vnc.

Missed this...

You think the guy has a bone to pick?

More importantly, his work effectively throws cold water on tired claims from Apple and its many lackeys that the Mac is all but immune from the kind of security attacks more regularly perpetrated against Windows-based machines.

While I understand the importance of pointing out security holes, sounds like this guy sounds like he has a chip on his shoulder. At the end of the day, no matter what they do in a lab, in the real world the Mac is a lot more secure...at least for now.

Anyone know of a decent, preferably not too expensive Mac PCI soundcard? I have a 800 MHz PowerPC G4 with 640 MB SDRAM and blew out the card from a static electric shock. Aside from compatibility, are there any specs that I should look for? I'm really clueless on this one. TIA.

Why PCI? Why not use a USB or firewire sound output device? You could probably get a dedicated USB2 or firewire card for cheap and a cheap output device and it would probably work as well as a stand-alone PCI card.

Beisdes, I think there were only a couple of PCI sound cards for Macs and I think that some of them don't even work in OS X.

This might be your problem right here. Your landlord is probably using WEP for "security" and there is no real standard for WEP password -&gt; key generation. You have to enter the actual WEP hex keys.

I'm not sure if WPA has this problem or if they standardized the password mechanisms. I think they did, but I can't really verify that right now.

Thanks for the advice. I don't know enough to respond, but the guy that sold me the computer suggested a PCI card that is Mac compatible. I just want to be able to plug in my 2.1 speaker system and have stereo sound again. Maybe I am using the wrong terminology, but my understanding was that I had to replace a sound card internally on the board. :dunno:

He's right. Get a USB version. Think about the IMic. It's a popular and decent product.

If you want slightly better quality and a few more options, you can try the Edirol UA-1EX.

It will be a hassle and expensive to find a PCI solution.

Definitely. It's a nice little gadget. Also note that many "vanilla" (stereo output, no special features) PC USB output devices work as well. It might be a good idea to dedicate a USB port just for this device since I think they can be quite bandwidth hungry. So it's probably worth it to splurge for a PCI USB 2.0 card to get some extra high speed USB ports.

USB cards are pretty inexpesnive and having more USB ports is never a bad thing.

Heh, I have an EMU10K-based SoundBlaster card that I found in the trash. It turns out that Creative actually made a Mac driver for this card, but the driver was buggy and only worked on OS 9. I considered using the Linux driver code to write an OS X audio driver for it but I never found the time Now that most Macs aren't even towers anymore, and I'm considering getting a laptop to replace my desktop machine, it's not clear to me if it would even be worth the porting effort even if I had the time.

Get a card with as many ports as possible. You might as well not waste the slot on a card with only two ports.

Development time is so expensive that if it took you more than an hour to port it, it would make more sense to just buy a new one. That is, unless you just enjoy doing it.

I'm totally digging this product. It's not for your less than technically savvy computer users. For those of us who are comfortable handling internal computer parts, this will help provide an inexpensive way to do backups of large amounts of data and can be useful when needing to transfer large amounts of data from one computer to another in a pinch. (Particularly when a computer fails, but the problem is not with the hard drive.)

For 25 bucks, you can't go wrong.
