I think the hoax was pretty funny, although at the time it irritated me.

Not so much because of the "destruction" of a Mac, but because of the spoiled rich-kid mentality that it described.

These are some of the comments I'd made at the time:

Quote
I don't care that it is a Mac or not. If someone had bought a 3,000 PC and gutted it to put in Mac parts, I would additionally say it's dumb. The point is...this kid took an expensive computer and basically made a 3,000 case for his crappy PC. And it IS a crappy PC, if you read the article. What's the point of that? I just think that his "friend" is lucky that he got himself some good parts for free because his buddy is a spoiled little rich kid. And yes. Anyone who gets a 3,000 computer from their parents for Christmas is a spoiled little rich kid.

I'm surprised it's white though.

I was expecting metal, especially after the new Cinema Displays. I thought the days of white plastic in Apple were over.

It's pretty cool looking though.

Holy [bleep!]ing [bleep!].

I am literally salivating right now. It's so friggin' beautiful.

Apple's industrial design team does it again. When will they ever quit?

When I think of all the overdesigned, bulky PCs out there, they just look so archaic in comparison to this. There is so much to be said for simplicity and clean lines.

Hell, even my iMac G4 (aka the iLamp) looks overdesigned compared to this.

I have to admit, I'm worried about the cabling.

All of the interface ports are on the right side - way up there. What will it look like with a spaghetti of cables hanging off of it?

Ah, there's a hole in the back of the stand to route cables through.

I stand corrected. Ha!

Although I think the idea is to go Airport for network and Bluetooth for keyboard/mouse, and then yeah, you just have your power cable (except for when you plug your iPod in).

That being said...anyone have any good experiences with Bluetooth keyboard/mice for the Mac? I really don't like the Apple ones - I want a good Bluetooth mouse for my Powerbook, but all the ones I've read about seem to have flaws.

Good point. It's only a matter of time before someone comes out with a white cable tube. <insert dirty joke here>

I was gonna start a thread about this, but alas, mugsy beat me to the punch.

Call me crazy but I think Bluetooth (or generic wireless) keyboards and mice aren't so hot. The big problem is that batteries run down which leads to flaky behavior when you least expect it and the inevitable battery changes. The answer to this is to have a rechargeable mouse/keyboard which you "dock" when you're not using them. But if you want your work area free from clutter, the docks for mouse and keyboard kind of blow that out of the water. There's also the small matter of interference and, for the security paranoid, the possibility that somebody is listening in on the wireless signal between the keyboard and the computer (don't laugh, I live near MIT :) )

For me they are especially useless because: A. I use one of those Logitech "thumball" trackballs. It doesn't move, so who cares if it has a cable or not? B. I type at my desk. I'm not one of those people who has a high backed leather chair leaning back with their chair 4 feet away from the desk with their feet up while drinking a mocha. That's bad for the wrists and is just begging to drop hot mocha all over one's lap and expensive wireless keyboard. Besides, how the heck can you see the screen with your feet in the way? If you want to relax like that, get a laptop. :)

The best wireless interface gadget has got to be the wireless, batteryless styluses for graphics tablets. If only they could make passive devices like that for mice and keyboards, but I guess that might be a bit tricky. :)

I'm so with you on this. I hate batteries. I hate changing them. I hate recharging them. In general I feel they are wasteful. Just plug it in and be nice to the environment, no battery to dispose of eventually.

Apple's usually on top of those things. I had a wireless mouse for a few years with a recharging dock station that served me alright. Apple already understands consumers' dislike of swapping batteries as evidence by the iPod. I think they'll do it right.

Apple's had a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for quite some time now.

I just don't like the mouse, because while the Apple mouse is gorgeous, I need multi-button and a wheel.

well the one cable going up to the side of your system wouldn't be that bad. Might even be preferrable to the PC style mouse-wraps-down-through-your-desk-and-gets-caught-on-edges-all-the-time.

I use a cordless mouse (infrared, not bluetooth) and I love it. when it gets low it warns me early enough so that that night before I go to bed I can charge it and the performance never - NEVER - gets spotty.

That iMac is amazing. I'm glad it's white - it maintains the white/consumer metal/professional distinction.

I used an RF wireless mouse which was fine for regular windows usage, but sucked for gaming or Photoshop.

'course I got so used to it that I didn't notice how badly it sucked until I got my new wired mouse.

Don't toss it out. There are PLENTY of things you can do with an old iMac. In my old apartment I ran my roommate's old pink iMac as a print/mp3 server in the living room.

I'm watching the keynote webcast right now, looking at the new features in Tiger. I really like Safari's RSS implementation, and I absolutely LOVE Dashboard. What's best about it is that it's HTML based, so anyone can write a decent widget without going through a crazy programming language.

i want want want! but have no idea how to convince my husband that i need it, my powerbook is only a few months old and my ilamp imac is still working perfectly after 2 and half years.

maybe this one needs to suffer an "accident" (!) :crash:

That's my beef with Apple ... often times they have form over functionality, which is really annoying ...

I look at the new iMac and can't help think, "Wow, small form factor ... you're going to be paying a large premium for all of those laptop componenets thare going in there."

It's great for someone that wants something that looks pretty on the desk, but if I had to have a Mac, I'd take a tower with a 22" cinema display over an iMac anyway ... I like being able to upgrade ...

I couldn't agree more with regards to the mouse. Apple is simply being stubborn in not adopting a two button mouse.

However, to label Apple as the one who focuses on Form over function is a bit of a stretch. Both platforms are guilty of this, and both have made great strides in function. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.

I will say no one has been more innovative in computer and interface design, than Apple.

When it comes to UI, Apple has done a nice job of making design and functionality work ... once you get used to it. I had a hard time dealing with OS X at first re: using a touchpad.

But when you get right to the bottom of things:

vs

The left: Looks cool, but not upgradeable I'm paying a lot of money for the design

The right: Ugly as sin, but upgradeable and customizeable I have more money to spend on a larger hard drive

Actually, the single button mouse is part of the HIG from Apple and has little to do with form and everything to do with accessibility.

They put the single button mouse in there to force developers to stick to an environment that works for folks who cannot use multi-button mice (for whatever reason). I'm used to having to get a new mouse for whatever computer I own anyway - I'm just miffed because I love the way the Apple mouse looks, I just can't use it (for what I need).

And again...if you're looking for a powerhouse, geekbox, the iMac is not meant for you. Do you bitch that you can't upgrade your laptop? No, because it's not designed for that. Neither is the iMac, and it never was.

I just got myself a new toy today...I went to the Apple store hoping to see a G5 iMac in person, but they didn't have any.

But I picked up one of these:

Of course, barely anyone I know runs iChat, so I don't have anyone to test it with yet. Blargh.

Actually, a lot of geeks I know have been getting very interested in mac for security reasons/OSX's unix implementation, and the G5 chip is a workhorse ... you can get a powerhouse out of your mac ;)

And in fact, I do bitch about upgrading my laptop ... it's a shame to have a form factor and mostly good components gotten rid of just because they are "old." Nowadays, manufacturers are getting very smart about designing their laptops to be somewhat upgradeable, whether it be adding more ram, inserting a new hard drive, upgrading your wireless NIC, upgrading your CD-ROM, or even upgrading your video card (thank you Dell).

Perhaps I need to clarify what I mean by functionality - in this case, its not necessarily about how easy it is to use something, but more like how easy it is to maintain something, how easy it is to extend its useful life, to make it more functional for me longer, to make it useful to me ... to me the mac falls short in this area ...

Don't get me wrong, I love their products ... they look cool :D In fact, I've been debating getting an iPod recently, but the one thing holding me back is its lack of an FM tuner ... other wise I would take it in a heartbeat.

Not laptop components if they're smart. My brother's company just finished a project that involved creating thirty machines exactly like this new iMac, all out of existing hardware, no laptop parts.

Apple has the advantage that his company didn't, in that they can machine their mobos and coolers to fit in the case. My brother didn't have that opportunity and they fit everything using off the shelf desktop componants.

Trust me, it's not laptop hardware.

I said iMac, not "Mac" :) That's why I'm getting a Powermac and not an iMac for my next video editing station.
