They have in concept. However, those products tend to cost a lot more and I believe only fit one interface. This is the first low cost solution of it's kind.

Definitely. It's a nice little gadget.
I just got it an plugged it in and finally have sound coming through my 2.1 speakers again! I'll put in my new USB card to enjoy USB 2.0 tonight or this weekend. Thanks again for the recommendations.

Don't know if anyone can help, but figured I would ask.
I have a secured wi-fi connection in my apartment. My boy friend at the time set it up on his Windows machine. Well, eventually we broke up.
Later on, I have the luck of getting a Wii, and would LOVE to be able to connect to the Wii Shop. Only problem is I have no idea what my password is, nor do I know what my screen name would be (when I go to the linksys router IP that is what it asks me for). I could probably figure out the password, if I just knew what my screen name was.
Anyway, I tried to reset the router last night, no luck. I found the router reset button on the back, and pushed it several times, nothing happened. I walked right back out to my Mac and online just like normal.
Is there any where to look in my Mac to get this information (primarly my WEP password)? I'm still a Mac noob, and have no idea what to do now.

To go back to factory defaults on the router you have to press and hold the reset button on most Linksys routers for a number of seocnds. Usually until it blinks or does some other light show.
However, you need to be prepared to resetup your router.
Quote (primarly my WEP password)? I'm still a Mac noob, and have no idea what to do now.
I don't think so. I think the mac stores that stuff in the keychain which probably means its encrypted. In any case, if your router supports WPA, you should use that instead of WEP. For one thing, there's no standard for WEP "passwords" the only standard is for the WEP keys which are really long numbers you have to type in by hand. When you use a password for WEP the mac just generates the keys but the way it generates the keys is not the same way the Linksys router generates the keys from a password. So you have to generate the keys on the Linksys and type them in by hand on the Mac.
If you use WPA, instead of WEP, you can skip all that because the password method is standard. Also WEP is very easily cracked. It barely keeps honest people honest. WPA, though, in some cases is still crackable, is much tougher. It's like the difference between putting a bathroom-door type lock on your front door, or a Schlage deadbolt.
Which Linksys router do you have? Is it a WRT54G or something else? If it's a WRT54G it will do WPA. Older linksys routers don't usually do WPA but will only do WEP.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the default in iPhoto so that it does not play music during a slideshow and does not do the Ken Burns effect?
I tried changing the default for my entire photo library using the Slideshow icon in iPhoto, but when I create a slideshow, it still has both music and Kens Burns effect.
I have iPhoto 6.06, OS 10.4.9, Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro
Also, I double-clicked on com.apple.iphoto.plist and edited it in Property List editor to change the default from YES to NO for "EnableBackgroundMusic" and "SlideshowAutoPanandZoom" (aka Ken Burns effefct), saved the file, and then went into iPhoto. Still no go. I went back and double-checked the com.apple.iphoto.plist file and my changes did save, but they don't seem to be having an effect in iPhoto.
Does anyone know how can I change these 2 defaults? Thanks in advance.

Has anyone looked at the new Leopard demos on the Apple website?
They just showcased a nearly final version of Leopard at the WWDC. I'm digging the new dock, Mail and Finder features. iChat looks cool, but I don't know anyone who really uses it over Adium.

I was watching the "liveblogging" coverage of WWDC today - I guess there wasn't as much "gee whiz" Leopard stuff, since it's mostly just polish on things we knew were coming.
As far as iChat goes - I think that it's mostly useful if you're doing video chat - straight, normal IM, yes, Adium is the way to go. But if you're in a videoconferencing situation where everyone's on Macs, then iChat is for you.
I'm unsure about the new Finder/Dock features. I think it's heavy on the eye candy and short on the useful. And making the Finder like iTunes? This is a step FORWARD?
Spaces, however, I dig. And Time Machine will make me very happy (especially seeing that you can use it over the network; previous reports were that you'd need a dedicated, local disk for Time Machine).

I love all the Leopard improvements. It's some major cosmetic facelifting to go with the changes in hardware over the last year or so. Sadly I don't think my dual G4 can run it.
Mugsy, I think those eye candy features are also showing to developers what the system is capable of doing with stuff like Core Animation. Things like Coverflow are demonstrations that there are a lot of under the hood developments that result in the kind of design aesthetic Apple wants to showcase.
But the iPhone web-based developing SDK? WEEEEEAAAAK. That means that there aren't going to be any separate apps - no Word or Excel on the go, no GPS add on, no IM client that works from the menu - you have to go through the web browser first. Lame.

The thing I love about the new IChat is that you will be able to request to take control over their computer remotely. (It seems as if they built in ARD to the OS and integrated with IChat.) This is huge for me. It will give me the ability to help family, friends, and private clients.
Yes, I could also use ARD, but you have to make sure the service is turned on, know their password, and if they are going through a router, the router has to be configured to rout traffic from that port.

The way they handle file folders in the dock is awesome. I'm also looking forward to being able to split up my workspace more effectively. I hope you can turn off a lot of the fancy effects like transparent menus and the desktop reflection in the dock (I'd be surprised if you couldn't). It'd be nice if you had the option to use the new finder and the old one. There are some situations in which the iTunes finder would be really useful and others where the current one is probably better. I do also share Marcelo's concerns about running it on a G4. The current version of OS X is barely acceptable on my work computer, and I'm unlike to get a better system anytime soon.

I believe this has been mentioned in earlier posts, but the tool you need (to sync iCal and GCal) is Spanning Sync.
It was free when in beta, but you gots to pay for it now. I have it, and while it's slightly pricey, I still have found it to work exceptionally well. I use it to keep my iCal, Gcal, and BlackBerry all in sync (well, the BlackBerry is synced to my iCal via Missing Sync, but it all ends up working together).

this isn't a totally mac question, but i need to buy an external HD, and i am thinking either G-Tech or La Cie. The girl at the mac store suggested G-Tech, but says La Cie is good, too. Any suggestions/first-hand experience with either of these brands?

I have an XP VM and I also use it to access the Boot Camp partition (Vista), although I tend to use the XP one more often. I don't do much in it, since most of my apps have OS X versions, but it's useful to fire up Project.

Okay, so maybe you mac.geeks can help me out with something...
As I've noted before on this thread, the 60GB hard drive on my MacBook is dangerously close to full almost all the time. This is posing a problem for me as I take more and more photos and, well, download more and more music. I've tried using the application WhatSize to figure out what the heck is taking up so much room, and it looks like it's mostly my music libary (about 30GB).
As far as I can see, I have two options to solve this problem:
Buy an external FireWire drive to keep my music and/or photos on, or
I have an old iMac (the "iLamp" model) sitting nearly unused in our office/spare room that I was going to sell. I could use this as my media center of sorts and just use that computer to sync up with my iPod.
So the question is, which of these two options is better and, if option 2 is better, do I just port my whole iTunes library back to the iMac with a Firewire connection?

SwingKitten, I'm not a mac user, but if I were you I might consider selling your iMac and using the money to buy an external drive. Seems like that might be the easiest option. I keep all my music on my windows laptop and back it up on my 100gb external, and that works fairly well for me.
