It's a public place! If some perv's going to stand around trying to take undie shots, he deserves to get made fun of or worse (knuckle sammich!), but that shouldn't keep you from being able to wear a skirt on glass stairs in civilised society. No more than wearing a v-necked blouse should give some puerile freak the right to crane his neck to see your bra with impunity. If someone stands around trying to get their jollies from fleeting glances of strangers' panties, they'd prolly have better luck at a laundromat or looking for thongs and low-riders at the mall.

One should not have to wear a burqa to escape victimisation. Of course, you may want to think twice about going commando with a skirt on those stairs, but that depends on you. 8)

OK - these people are nuts. 3,000 of them lining up under heat lamps, free tea being passed out all to go into a computer store.

When Trader Joe's opened in Union Square a few years ago I said the same thing - the line was around the block for weeks. Crazy!

Do you know how awkward it is to have a political argument with a naked man?

This isn't someone hiding under a staircase hoping to get a glimpse. All you have to do is look up (which people do quite regularly walking up a staircase or just looking around an interestingly designed store).

I suppose if someone doesn't care who's looking under their skirt/dress then they won't care who's looking. I'll bet there will be some article about someone bringing their children and gets upset because they're looking up under all people's skirts and dresses.

So what? There's much more exposed skin on a typical beach.

That does not seem to be a relevant comparison and in fact skirts the issue. At a beach, individuals choose to reveal as much of their own skin as they want and are quite aware that they are doing so. In general I would argue that someone wearing a skirt is intentionally covering up with the skirt (revealed legs excluded here), and therefore the covered area is unintentionally revealed in this instance.

More to the point, I don't think that people encounter the type of architectural structure that we are discussing here, so I don't think they are accustomed to realizing how revealing it can be to walk on.

your best bet is to download from a freeware or torrent site, or ask one of the many people that run mac to let you download it off of them. Because it is usually bundled with mac OS I doubt mac would distribute it on there website.

Um, how do you NOT have Address Book? What version of OS X are you running?

Tell me what version of the OS you are running and what computer you have, and I'll try to send you a copy.

It comes installed with the OS, so it must have been accidentally deleted.

I got Sylwia's old computer and when she gave it to me she took off a bunch of programs and I think somehow Address Book was lost in the process. I'm running OS 10. It's odd because obviously the function of address book exists, like my mail program saves email addresses, I just have no means of adding to the details of those addresses. I appreciate it a lot folks.

OS 10.what?

Meanwhile, is anybody successfully using the Airport Extreme Base Station with Leopard -- and running external hard drives and/or usb printers via the usb port? I need some NAS, but it seems that there are some issues out there.

It will help to know exactly what version of the operating system, and the model of the computer. (Primarily, if it is a PPC or Intel chip) I'm pretty sure it is probably PPC, but I don't know for sure. Go to the Apple Menu > About this Mac, and you should get both the exact os version and the model.

Sorry, OS X. I just naturally called it ten. I don't usually talk about mac's with other people who know what they're talking about. Besides, I've only been using this thing for about 7 months. Don't get me wrong, I love it, it's just still relatively new to me.

Here's some stuff I found: Machine Name: PowerBook G4 Machine Model: PowerBook3,4 CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1) Number Of CPUs: 1 CPU Speed: 667 MHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB Memory: 768 MB Bus Speed: 133 MHz Boot ROM Version: 4.3.7f3

I haven't seen anyone here talking about MacHeist, but if you're interested purchasing some selected Mac software at an amazing price, check out MacHeist (FULL DISCLOSURE - I get (and I think it gets shared with you) a bonus app or two if you use the link to access the site and purchase).

They're currently offering 11 Apps (1Password, CoverSutra, Cha-Ching, iStopMotion, Awaken, Speed Download, AppZapper, TaskPaper, CSSEdit, Snap Pro X, and PixelMator) for 49, and the organizers have mentioned there's a possibility of throwing a couple of others into the mix. Additionally, 25 of your purchase price will also go to one of the following charities, and you get to pick which charity:

<

ul>Action Against Hunger AIDS Research Alliance Alliance for Climate Protection Direct Relief International Humane Society International The Nature Conservancy Save the Children Save Darfur Prevent Cancer Foundation World Wildlife Fund[/list:u:a55e600e20]The site gives a rundown of the apps. Yeah, you may not use them all, but individually buying the 11 apps currently offered would cost you 368.75.

FYI - A few of the apps are Leopard only.

I like the Macbook Air, but for me the kickass update is the maturation of appleTV. Before it was this random unsuccessful thing that gave you crappy pixellated video over your TV. Now with the rental service and full HD functionality it's something I might consider getting.

Heh, the funny thing is that, technically, it's the least capable of all of the Mac notebooks.

I still want.

Everybody's been screaming for a small/light form factor laptop for the road and this is Apple's answer.

Though, it's a shame they couldn't work a DVD in there somewhere since road-warriors often like to watch DVD's on the plane. I'm guessing they figure you'll either rip your DVD with Handbrake and watch it off of disk or you'll be watching iTunes video rentals...yeah right :)

I think people would prefer a fully capable laptop in that form factor but it will probably be a while before that can come true.

I think that the lack of optical drive is more to push a platform and lifestyle than anything else. In reality, how often do most of us use optical drives? I might use mine once every two weeks to rip some new CDs... but if you're a die hard Apple-ite, you're buying your music off iTunes.

Jobs introduced an entire platform design to push a lifestyle that's net-centric, not hard media-centric. It's an interesting concept, and one that intrigues me.

i'm writing this on my new light, small fform-factor laptop that lacks an optical drive. Yes, you guessed it, a brand new...

...Asus Eee!

It's quite cute and rather fun so far -- as much as I'm the Apple fanbboy, I find this to be a high value/money second laptop (only 400 ). Yeah, the keyfboa0d is totally cramped, as yo can see by the unedited errors here, so I woundl'nt write my dissertation on it, but for just web browsin, light e-mail, etc... it's great.

I held a macbook air in the store the other day, and it was scary how small and light it was, how thin the unit was, and how sturdy it felt.

However I didn't really drool over it. It was a nice piece of engineering, but I didn't really feel that "it hurts my heart not to own one" feeling that you get with something like the iPhone.

Long story short, one of my external hard drives bit the dust today...and it just happens to be the drive that I have OS X installed on.

Of course, the internal drive on my Mac never got upgraded to Leopard, so I can't do the restore...yet. My Leopard disks are not at home, but I'll bring them home tomorrow and I guess this weekend I'll be putting the DR capabilities of Time Machine to the test.

No, and I support hundreds of them. Very odd. Must be just a freak manufacturing flaw.

I'm really glad it didn't start a fire.
