OK, so far, my Time Machine restoring is working okay.

It did take two tries to get the restore from Time Machine thing to work from the Leopard DVD. The first time I tried it, I couldn't get it to see the internal hard drive as a destination for the restore.

Eventually I got that to work. And it was great. Simple as pie.

Of course, I have all my data on a separate partition on the external drive that got hosed. So now I'm slowly restoring that via Time Machine (I tried grabbing all the folders on the drive and clicking "restore", but it didn't like that. So I'm going one folder at a time (off the root) and that seems to be working better. We'll see how well it handles the iPhoto library.

One thing that I am kicking myself for - I had my Aperture library excluded from the TM backup (because it's notoriously a bad TM-citizen) figuring "well heck, I back up the Aperture library to a vault on a different disk".

Guess what? I haven't backed up my Aperture library (since it's a manual process) since Dec 29, 2007. Oh well. Luckily I have anything important already on Flickr. I hope.

OK, so I'm pretty much done with my restore from TM.

The biggest problem I had was with iPhoto. I store my iPhoto library on the data partition and not in my Home directory. And somewhere along the line I had upgraded my iPhoto. When I picked just the iPhoto from /Data, it did not restore very well. But if I browsed back in Time Machine to before the upgrade, restored the iPhoto Library folder, and then restored the current iPhoto Library over that, everything worked swimmingly.

Got my MacBook. It's purty.

I guess my first project is to re-install Leopard in order to get rid of all the extraneous languages and printer drivers that I won't be using.

A Mac-savvy friend also suggested that I set up an admin account and then set myself up in a separate account as a user with admin priviledges. Apparently this makes certain admin functions easier?

Any other suggestions for setting up a Mac?

The stuff below may only apply to Pre-Leopard OS - I'm still using Tiger, so I don't know if this stuff is an issue with Leopard. If you have sensitive data on it, you might want to encrypt the folder with that data, or maybe your entire home folder via the Filevault function. Otherwise, anyone that gets their hands on the machine can hook it up to another computer via Firewire, and access all unencrypted files. If you encrypt your home folder, it will probably make things take longer to open up, but to me it is not a big deal for the security you get. Also, if you encrypt your home folder, don't worry if every so often when shutting down, you get a message giving you the option to recover unused space, or something like that. Just click OK if you have 20 more seconds, otherwise skip it. Filevault info here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1877.html

Also, www.macworld.com has loads of handy tips and info.

Lots of security experts do not recommend using FireVault on your mac. Lots of unintended consequences. A few quick Google searches might find more viable options.

Ogden, you can eliminate the extras on your machine without reinstalling the OS. Programs like Monolingual can do it for you. There are tons of great 3rd party applications that do all sorts of neat things. The development community for Mac is a lot better than for Windows.

But reinstalling the OS is never a bad idea, so go nuts if you like.

I had not heard this. I just now searched around and the only problems I am seeing people complain of had to do with earlier OSs like Panther. Most of what I'm seeing is recommendations that we SHOULD be using Filevault. Do you recall, or could you link to some of the issues? I cannot seem to find them.

Also, if you are going through the process of setting up two accounts, particularly if you are not going through a firewall, your working account should NOT be set as an administrator. Most installers will allow you to authenticate as the administrator from any account. Those that react badly, just login to the admin account to do the install.

See Here.

Also, as Marcelo said, FileVault is a bit of a pain, and dramatically slows down your computer, and there are other risks. Most people suggest using an encrypted disk image.

Man that was easy. Up and running in no time at all. Reinstalled OS X, set up user accounts and then upgraded the RAM to 4GB. Easy as cake.

Very cool.

Why did you reinstall the OS? Didn't you just get a new system? I'm confused.

AppleTV 2.0 finally came out. I can't seem to find any information on the two things I need to know before I make my purchase. No one will tell me if the TV shows are available at HD resolution and 16x9 aspect ratio (like the movies are). I also don't know if the HD resolution is only available through HDMI or if I can use component video.

I wanted to pitch the unused language files and printer drivers. I know you can download some apps to do the same thing but as I had an already clean hard drive, it seemed to be just as easy to do a custom install of the OS without the extra files.

I've used Mercury Messenger in the past with fantastic results. It's a Java app that will work on both systems.

Skype works really well for video chat as well.

The slowness wouldn't be due to your IM program, but rather the configuration of your internet service. If you're using a wireless router or something you may have to enable port forwarding to your computer for the proper ports. I don't know if you know what I'm talking about, but hopefully someone else will take the banner and go into specifics.

Friend's computer got an Overlap Extent Allocation Error but can't get to the desktop to even run any of those fixes. Is this a cheap fix at an Apple store to get back up and running with the files intact? Email's most important followed by a few other work files.

Thanks!

Yeah, not a big deal. They can fix this themselves if they are reasonably comfortable with computers. If not, they should take it into the Apple Store or other service.

Either way, they are going to need an external hard drive, firewire preferably.

They can install the OS on the external drive and boot the machine from that drive, then copy whatever data they can. (You should be able to copy any of the files that are not involved in the overlapping data.... which should be most if not all of the data.)

They can put the problemed computer in Target Disk mode and connect it to another Mac. Then either copy data to the other Mac temporarily, or an attached external drive.

Once they have retrieved the data, they are going to have to boot off of a system disk and reinstall the OS.

Call me if you have any questions.

Macgeeks, is there some easy way I can add an option to OSX (Tiger)'s ctrl-click menu? Specifically, I want to be able to right-click on a folder or file and have it give me the option to email that folder or file using Thunderbird, my default email program.

Well, "easy" is relative . You could use Automator, alone or in conjunction with applescript probably. Automator is worth exploring in general for savvy users, and this would be a good way to begin the process.

Thanks - I finally read through that thread. The Mac World link is also very useful. I've been fooling around with creating, encrypting, and converting disk images and seeing how they work. re: the last question and using automator, thanks anyway, but it's not practical for me to take the time to get into automator for that right now (although I did try and Thunderbird is not listed). Maybe another time. Right now I'm going to focus on security. Thanks for all the help!

Quicksilver will do this for you, but in a different way.

First off, you should have Quicksilver anyway, it's basically an application launcher that uses keyboard shortcuts instead of having to mouse around everywhere.

Basically you give yourself a trigger key (I use control-tab) and then start typing the application/document you want, and within a few letters it has it, hit enter, and it opens.

But the functionality is much better than that - you can call up a document and instead of opening it, you can email it to someone.

It's not right clicking, but it's much better because you don't have to mouse around looking for the original document, you just call it up using quicksilver's search function.

That sounds tempting. I looked into it last night and also watched a brief tutorial on Youtube. But I get the impression that the latest version is a RAM hog. Mabye sometime at a later date, but for now, I a bit reluctant to add more programs. Thanks anyway, though!
