The ethernet port on my mac book stopped working, then the power cord melted through, so I sent it back to Apple. Not only did they fix the problems, they repaired the case which had gotten damaged through normal wear and tear.

Quote IBM study shows that its own engineers are hot for MacsBy Chris Foresman Published: April 16, 2008 - 01:08PM CT
IBM has recently completed the first phase of a pilot program that began late last year in order to test the use of Macs at IBM's Watson Research Center. Roughly Drafted was able to obtain a document from IBM detailing the program, which was "designed to study the possibility of moving significant numbers of employees to the Mac platform." The goal is to encourage a more heterogenous, yet interoperable, computing environment.
The pilot originally included 24 staff members, mostly researchers and engineers, and each was given a MacBook Pro to use for a four-month evaluation period. The participants were asked to use the MacBook Pro as a primary machine, turning to their standard issue ThinkPad only as a last resort. Of the 22 participants that gave feedback at the end of the four months, 19 chose to keep the MacBook Pro and use VMware Fusion to run Windows when necessary.
The feedback was mostly positive: "There are a number of features in the Mac that make it much better than a Windows machine. Overall productivity in using the Mac platform is higher. I can imagine that the new version of the operating system will make those features even better." Because of this, the pilot has been extended to 50 additional users for the first half of this year. If the feedback continues to be positive, the program will extend to an additional 100 users later this year. An internal intranet site called "Mac IBM" notes that there is an official group of Mac users at IBM, with nearly 1,000 members around the globe.
The program was not without issues, however. A number of IBM development tools do not have Mac-compatible versions, and support for IBM's InfoPrint workgroup printers is missing in action. Common enterprise tools from Microsoft, Visio and NetMeeting also have no Mac version. There were complaints of issues with Lotus Sametime, the IM client that is part of Lotus Notes, and with PowerPoint. Having worked for a large corporation that relied heavily on Lotus Notes and Microsoft Office on Windows laptops, I can vouch for those issues with Lotus Notes. However, I never experienced a problem moving PPT files between Mac and Windows versions of Office.
With the Mac gaining popularity with consumers, especially college students who are beginning to move into the workforce, Macs are starting to gain more traction in the enterprise. Combined with the ability to run Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows, and their award-winning industrial design, Apple computers are starting to win over IT departments. If Macs prove to be a good choice for IBM the progenitor of the current Wintel PC it might be the impetus for IT departments everywhere to rethink their Windows-only policies
Quote The burglary was reported April 27, when three roommates returned to their Ridgeview Avenue apartment about 10 p.m. to discover that it had been ransacked.
Among the items taken were two laptops, two flat-screen televisions, two iPods, gaming consoles, DVDs and computer games. Police found no sign of force.
On Tuesday, police said, one of the victims, who works at The Apple Store in The Westchester mall, received a call from a friend asking her if she was online.
The victim said no, and was told by the friend that his computer showed her as being logged onto the Internet.
At that point, police said, the victim signed onto another computer and used the "Back to My Mac" program to determine that her stolen MacIntosh laptop indeed was signed onto the Web and that someone was using it to shop online. She then activated the stolen computer's camera, allowing her to "see" what was in front of the laptop.
At first, police said, she saw only an empty chair. But a short time later, they said, she was able to photograph a man, Shahikian, sitting in front of her stolen laptop. The victim then was able to find photos of Frias using the computer after it had been stolen, police said.
Fischer said the victim did not know either man but showed the photos to one of her roommates, who recognized them as having attended a get-together at the apartment a few weeks before the burglary.

Has anyone ever restored a single file from a Time Machine backup onto a different Mac?
Is this possible?
My Mac is out for repairs and I need a file from it, which I have on a Time Machine backup. I've tried mounting this backup on a Linux machine but the permissions don't allow even the root user to access the files I need.
So is it possible to access a a file from a Time Machine backup on a different Mac? If so, how?

Hmm... that doesn't make sense to me. What permissions does the file in question have? Also, does the linux machine handle the HFS filesystem?

Linux can mount read-only an HFSPlus (Journaled) filesystem. It turns out I was reading the structure wrong --since the Time Machine backups are versioned, I was looking at a link to the files I needed, which was hidden in another directory, rather than the actual files themselves.
I've managed to copy the files I need off the backup drive.

Quoted from "Mugsy Malone" Right. But what I want is not to backup my computer - what I want is to keep two iTunes libraries in sync. Will Chronosync update the iTunes library on the other computer, or just keep the folders in sync? From what I can see on the product's homepage, no, it can just keep files in sync.
If you look at the Automator routine I posted, you'll see the extra functionality that I need - in addition to keeping the two folders in sync (which Chronosync would be a fine tool for) I need the G4 to monitor the folder for changes and then add those new files to its iTunes library.
Additionally, I just realized that I am going to want to do the same thing with iPhoto - keep the iPhoto library on the G4 updated with changes from the Intel - since Front Row has NO way to browse pictures on another computer.

Quick question for the tech-savvy:
I gave my brother my old G4 iMac (the one with the dome base and swiveling flat screen) when I got my laptop. It was (and still is) running OS X 10.3 on an 800mHz G4 processor with 512MB of RAM.
Then I got him a new iPod for Christmas. Lo and behold, it requires 10.4 or higher to sync with his computer, so now we're looking at just upgrading to 10.5 (Leopard) since 10.4 isn't in stores anymore and is going for a mint on eBay.
But 10.5 has minimum system requirements of at least 867MHz G4 processor, and 512MB of RAM.
Can he upgrade even though he has a 800MHz processor? I told him I thought the difference was small enough that it might be okay, but I am no techie. I also told him that he should upgrade his RAM at the minimum to maybe make up the difference. He does want to update this machine so it lasts him a few more years.. it's been good to both of us since at least 2003, maybe even 2002 (I can't remember when I got it). He's going to call a local Apple servicer to see what they think, but I thought I'd get as many opinions as I can.

I would see if you can get a copy of Tiger (10.4) and use that instead. Beyond the CPU speed issue, trying to get that computer to boot off a Leopard double density DVD and install the OS, will take hours and is more likely to crap out in the middle. Also, you should upgrade to 1GB of RAM. You can probably do so for about 35.

I tried installing 10.5 on the exact same machine with the exact same processor. While the install seemed to go okay, the machine would hit the blue screen after booting and freeze up. I tried a second clean install to see if it was just a fluke, and got the same exact behavior. I gave up and installed 10.4. It now runs perfectly and syncs my iPhone with no issues.

Hmmmmm....
Well I did a bit of research on some of the Mac forums and it seems that you can overclock your CPU speed up to 867MHz and the install will work. HOWEVER, this is slightly pushing MY level of comfort with technology (I worked in my college's computer lab on WinNT machines and have lots of experience fiddling with BIOS and such, but have never had to work that closely with Macs), and I certainly couldn't walk my brother through it on the phone. I would have to go up there myself (a weekend trip; he's 5 hours away) and fiddle with it, which may be outside the realm of possibility right now.
Tiger is selling on eBay for about 180 right now (way more than the 129 for a new copy of Leopard), so I guess we could do that.. it's just frustrating that we have to pay more for a piece of obsolete software and not have the computer be completely up to date.
My brother is going to call the techs at a Mac servicer near him tomorrow and see what they have to say. Thanks for the help, guys.

We all know how much computers advance over just a couple of years. But I don't know if I've ever seen such a straight-up comparison like this.
The iPhone is more powerful than the 1998 iMac. And WAY more powerful than a 1984 Macintosh. Makes logical sense, but it's still freakin' nuts.
