That said, the reason it has fewer malware and virus attacks is only partly this; Mostly it's just not that interesting of a target.

There is a lot of debate about this. While there is no doubt this is a factor, it simply does not explain the profound lopsidedness of the equation. Depending on how you count viruses, there is about a million viruses for windows. The most common form of virus for the Mac are trojans from some bad websites. Smart browsing and wise installation will keep you protected from trojans, though, because you must choose to install them and then input your password for them to install. I have not seen a serious virus threat on the Mac since OS X came out. I have never personally got one. None of my private clients have gotten one. And none of the thousands of Macs in my enterprise has gotten one. ( We do have Symantec corporate installed on our Macs, but they have never found a virus to my knowedge. ) I did have to deal with a few nasty viruses on the Mac under OS 9, that really brought our company to a freeze. One was a OS based virus. The worse virus was a bi-platform micro based virus in MS Office.

Given the fact that Apple continuously touts that it's operating system does not get viruses, you would think there is plenty of motivation for someone wanting to be the hacker that humbles Apple and the Macintosh user base.

Most experts state as market share grows for the Mac, the Mac will be more vulnerable. I have been hearing this for years, and to date, nothing has really changed yet. It is a matter of time. But you simply can't completely explain the disparity based on market share.
