My dad is actually at MacWorld, even though he doesn't own a Mac or an iPod. He's just a big nerd, like me. I'm so so jealous.

I dig the idea of the Mac Mini, though I wonder about what it might be good for.

What would you use a Mac Mini for that wouldn't be better served by a powerbook or an ibook? Maybe for your average bookkeeper or secretary...

FoolsRun, it's targeted at former PC users who love the iPod but don't want to buy a Mac because of the price.

It's super cheap portable computer.

We were just talking about this at work. Most of us have laptops, but a lot of us never use the "mobile" feature - we just use the "portable."

If I could have a smaller computer that I could just bring home and plug into the monitor there, I'd dig it.

Mostly, it's geared towards switchers though. A cheap Mac that works with your existing PC monitor and keyboard/mouse. It's an iPod accessory :)

Okay, I can dig it as an iPod accessory. I guess it'd make a pretty good "living-room computer", too. Or plug in a giant USB hard drive and make it a music server for your iPod and AirTunes Express...

Okay, I'm getting a little more of the idea.

I'm thinking of buying one. I don't need a laptop, don't like them usually, and don't have a place for one at home. The mini is so damn small it will fit easily in a corner of my desk, and hooks up through a KVM that I already have.

Next issue with the MacMini, it only has 256MB DDR memory. I know this wouldn't be nearly enough to run even iTunes and FireFox simultaniously in XP without some slowdown, is this enough on a mac?

At 500, it has 256MB. You can upgrade it to 512 or 1GB.

All non-Powermacs come with 256 MB standard. I ran my Powerbook with only that when my 512 MB module needed replacing...it was annoying, but better than trying to run XP with 128MB of RAM.

It's totally easy to upgrade memory in a Mac; just never buy the memory from Apple directly - way more expensive.

Also, I've heard some speculation that this could also be a small push for the business market. Same idea as mentioned elsewhere- they've already got monitors and keyboards, so it never made sense for them to buy iMacs or eMacs en masse.

I was in my office with my bosses when the mac mini was unveiled. The first thing everyone said was "Damn, I can buy that for my son/mom/dad!"

They're counting on the business market, the PC market, but also the "mac users who've wanted their family members and loved ones to switch but couldn't really afford it" market.

I don't like the iPod Shuffle though. Not enough features to be competitive, although the price point and the size are impressive.

Before the iPod Mini was released, the flash player market was double what it is today. That means the iPod Mini did NOT canibalize hard drive player/iPod sales but instead got Flash player buyers to spend more money on buying a Mini and claimed the upper end of the Flash Player market.

This means the iPod Shuffle is being sent in to sweep up the low end market where people are buying 49 128 MB players.

Yeah but the mini offered something that the shuffle doesn't, and I don't really see anything in the ipod shuffle other than brand name to make me look at it and be like "hey, I want that!"

There's no screen. There's limited control. It's still a tad expensive. And it only comes in white. The iPod mini was a masterpiece of product design, this just looks like a half-hearted attempt. I just don't see it taking off.

I used to have a 512MB CF player. Bigger than the shuffle, for sure, but I can't imagine working it without a display.

Skip!

Marcelo, you also were the one who, like all of /., thought the mini was stupid and nobody would buy it (IIRC).

Not saying that it's genius, and it won't tank...but I wouldn't be surprised. I might buy one actually.

The mini WAS stupid.

But people bought it. It was, like I said, a masterpiece of product design, not of product performance. Hell, I held one in my hands and said "I want this...so badly." Maybe that'll happen with the shuffle. Without a screen though, I doubt it.

And as I just sold my 10 gig iPod for a hundred bucks, I'm in the market for a new one. I'm not too big of a fan of the 4G design yet, so I'm cautious.

I'm undecided on the "shuffle". Kind of a dumb name, but at least it doesn't continue all the iName nonsense.

The little (2) footnote from Rik's "gum" picture reads "Do not eat iPod Shuffle'.

I think this is a great little computer for people with basic needs. (Heck, the mini has more horsepower than my current emac) Although the price tag is not very accurate, because you are going to want at least 512MB of RAM, so add at least another 100.

They are also pushing it for developers who need both OS. They talk about popping the mini on top of your PC and attack to to a KVM and your ready to go. I can see how that is an attractive idea.

Some people say this is the second coming of The Cube. First, Apple has gotten better at making compact units. Secondly, the cube was pretty pricey. Started at about 1700. They priced themselves out of the market considering it would cost you the same as a tower, and there was no expandability. However, at 500, I think they will price themselves into a new market.

One thing I don't get about Macs is the constant upgrading licensing. You're up to what, 10.4 now? It seems like every minor revision number is a "must have," and costs you 99 here, 99 there. In my limited Mac experience, this seems analogous to paying for Windows service packs. Please help me understand.

The paid updates are much more substantial than you realize. It's like going from 98 to XP to Longhorn.

In between these releases (which are going to scale back some once Tiger hits) there are free updates which are like Service Pack updates.

I know MANY tech sector people who say that the cost in the long run is much cheaper due to the hours lost fixing Windows problems and security holes and virus attacks anyway.
