You know what's cool?

I bought a mac keyboard to use on my PC. Only 29. It's slimmer, and better looking.

It works great. I can use those sound keys above the keypad to adjust volume and mute, and the keyboard has 2 USB ports.

I'm finally getting a digital SLR camera! Should I pony up for iLife or get a more professional photo album software? I have photoshop already.

Depends on whether or not you're going to use any of the other iLife programs, and how much "more professional photo album software" costs. iPhoto is very nice, easy to organize, and easy to maintain, and iPhoto '05 has some pretty powerful photo editing tools. So my recommendation is to try out iPhoto somewhere and make sure there's nothing hugely lacking before you decide.

Virginia Tech gained international honors for building the fastest supercomputer at any academic institution in the world. And they did it using Power Mac G5s. From that milestone, Virginia Tech has moved ahead again with System X, a new cluster using 1,100 Xserve G5s.

Ranking seventh in the Top 500 list of the world s most powerful computer systems, System X was built at a fifth of the cost of the second-least expensive system in the top 10.

When we built the first supercomputer from Power Mac G5s, we proved that a radically-different communications technology could be used to create a large-scale computing platform, says Dr. Srinidhi Varadarajan, director of the university s Terascale Computing Facility and the system s lead designer.

We re recognized for knowing how to build these terascale computing machines and with very good price performance.

But the measure of the facility is the kind of science it produces.

Meeting the Grand Challenge

The Xserve-based supercomputer is part of Virginia Tech s Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science, where scientists tackle multi-disciplinary, grand challenge problems in science and engineering large-scale problems such as computational fluid dynamics, molecular modeling, nanoelectronics, quantum chemistry, computational biology and large-scale network emulation.

Simulating the physics inside a molecule or the interactions among atoms in a material science application requires huge amounts of computation and data, says Dr. Cal Ribbens, associate professor of computer science. And the results of the simulation demand that the computations be very tightly coupled, because the answer in one part of the simulation depends on the answer in another part. So not only do you need very powerful computers, you need them connected by a very fast network.

That s what the Apple Xserve cluster provides.

Teraflops to Spare

Virginia Tech moved to the Xserve G5 cluster for several reasons, but primarily because of its server-optimized architecture, groundbreaking performance and innovative management tools.

The Xserve cluster was a perfect alternative for us because of its computational capability, reliability and responsiveness, says Dr. Varadarajan.

With dual 64-bit, 2.3GHz G5 processors in each of its 1,100 Xserve G5 units, the new cluster operates at 12.25 teraflops.

Dr. Varadarajan considers the Xserve s PowerPC processor ideal: Its floating-point performance matches or exceeds that of Intel s Itanium2 solution.

The On-Campus Supercomputer

We ve put a state-of-the-art, ahead-of-the-curve machine here for our research faculty to use and they re very excited about having the Macs here. says Dr. Terry Herdman, director of research computing.

Only a handful of universities have a world-class supercomputing resource, confirms Dr. Kevin Shinpaugh, Virginia Tech s director of research and cluster computing. Before, our faculty members would have to go to a National Science Foundation [NSF] center, for instance, and write a proposal to get time on these machines.

Since the demand for NSF machines is very high, says Dr. Shinpaugh, a scientist could sit in line for six months just to get access. Then they may not get as many compute hours as they really needed. Having a resource at Virginia Tech gives them quick access to a large system for world-class science.

Question about iLife '05...

I do not like the way iLife '04 organizes pics. The thing I do not like is the fact that I cannot create subfolders. For instance, I want to have one folder labeled STLBX, then subfolders labeled 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005. But, as far as I can tell, I can't do that. So I have jsut been using Finder, which sucks for image previewing and manipulation, which iLife does pretty well at.

Since iLife has not thrilled me with its organizational abilities, I have not even looked at its image manipulation abilities. But then... that is why I have Photoshop CS :)

Two things, Cheeta:

1) It is iPhoto, not iLife that you are talking about. :)

2) What is your question?

Cheeta, iPhoto 5 (contained within iLife '05, along with iMovie, iDVD, Garage Band and iTunes) allows you to create subfolders.

Thanks, Mugs. I meant to say iPhoto. Hey, it was early and I had not had my 3 shots of espresso yet ;)

So iPhoto '05 does allow subfolder creation? That is good news. Because I had no idea what I was going to use to try to organize all these photos. I mean... Finder is okay for organizing, but sucks for previewing, and has no slideshow capability. So I tried to use Finder and iPhoto, only to find that iPhoto created copies of said photos in its OWN folders, so now I have like twice the photos I had. Whatta mess. Bah.

Switch to Macs has Web all riled up A Seminole technology security expert is surprised by reaction to his post of frustration with Windows and Intel. By DAVE GUSSOW, Times Staff Writer Published May 28, 2005 Winn Schwartau switched his office from PCs to Macintosh computers, a seemingly simple move that created an overwhelming reaction in the online world. Schwartau is no mere computer user. He's a nationally known technology security expert from Seminole, so when he wrote in his online blog that he was tired of unreliable technology and fending off virus and spyware threats to his office PC he triggered a torrent of attention. "I just didn't know this was going to be controversial," Schwartau said. In a column titled "Mad as Hell," posted Monday at the Network World Web site and his blog (securityawareness.blogspot.com) on Wednesday, Schwartau declared that systems using Microsoft's Windows software and Intel processors are "a threat to the national economic security of any organization or nation-state that relies (upon) it." The Macintosh community, always on the lookout for good news about Apple Computer and its products, started a flood of reaction. Schwartau's blog tracked 9,000 visitors Wednesday, 40,000 Thursday and 12,000 by midafternoon Friday. In a month, it usually gets 4,000 visitors. According to Greg Hoffman, chief marketing officer for Schwartau's Security Awareness Co., responses were running 10-1 in favor of and praising the switch, which occurred last month. Some in the Linux operating system community sent notes recommending it, and some fans of Windows and Intel systems, known as WinTel in shorthand, responded with some less than charitable comments. Macintosh computers are less susceptible to spyware and other forms of computer chicanery in part because of the way they're designed and in part because Apple has such a small share of the computer market that spyware code writers don't bother with it. But, Schwartau says, it's too early for people to draw conclusions about what his switch really means. For one thing, he says he has posted only the first two installments of what he says will be a 30-part series on the subject. Second, he hasn't abandoned WinTel, though he doesn't want to give away the end of his tech saga. But he clearly is unhappy with the time he has invested in protecting systems from spyware, viruses and other problems. "I know how to do all this stuff," Schwartau said. "The point is I don't want to do it and I don't think 98 percent of the computing public should have to do it." Dave Gussow can be reached at gussow sptimes.com or 727 771-4328.

My prediction is that the Intel stuff is all unsubstantiated. Most likely (if anything) is that we'll see Intel taking over the production of the PPC chips.

Right now, Apple is paying less (by almost a factor of half) for the G5's than anything comprable from Intel. Not to mention that all the "sources" for this have been really sketchy. I think C Net got punk'd.

The transcript is lagging, but according to the chatter in the irc channel, it sounds like the Big News is that OS X will now run on both x86 and PPC.

Apparently Jobs is now demoing OS X on a P4. Talking about "universal binaries", that is, you have a binary that will run on both PPC/intel.

Just got myself a mac mini. It came with Tiger. Dashboard is really cool.

I have that, a Samsung 173P monitor, and JBL speakers, and the top of my desk looks like a museum showcase. I still have a PC cos I'm a windows software developer, but I'm gonna slide that under the desk and use remote desktop connection to connect to it when I need it.

Any must have apps for OS X?

So I got Fire for IM, using Firefox (more than Safari) for my browser. I want to use Gaim for IM but I'm trying to avoid the whole Fink/X11 route. I'm trying to go all darwin ports. [/img]

Am I reading correctly that I'll be able to dual-boot OSX on my x86 (AMD) machine?

I know they've been side-developing OSX for the x86 arcitecture for a while, just incase the deal with Moto fell through.

So can I dual-boot, or do I need specialized hardware?

It might depends on which intel chipset your cpu is. The biggest issue with porting the OS is the big endian little endian problem. Itanium supports big endian and little endian architecture while most other Intel platforms do not.

Doesn't have to be ported. All versions of OS X have been designed to run on Intel since the get-go. Jobs demoed it on a P4.
