Hey Nate, Yeah, that was reallllly weird.... We were all dazed and wondering when the joke would be over, but turns out that cop was actually serious! Was he practicing for the show 'Cops' or something? I'll definitely write a letter and encourage the Denver dancers that went to do so as well. We were talking about whether writing to the department would help, but sending our version of the situation to you sounds good. Thanks for your hard work and energy! We really enjoyed ourselves; I know I had a great time :) Kelly

All who didn't come missed out on a police escort out of the dance, that was special. I also remember something about a business license for running a dance of any type. What are the chances this doesn't apply to a private party with a voulentary contribution to cover the rental price? Who says we all came to the dance studio to dance? :hint: :hint:   :knudge: :knudge:

Man, I always miss out on the fun stuff. I left the late night dance probably just minutes before those cops showed up. Is it true that people were shouting "Swing Heil" as they were escorted to their cars?

Since I wasn't there, I don't know how much good it'll do, but I'll definitely give my testimony that there weren't any drugs or alcohol involved. (Though I did have my fair share of Doritos).

I hope nobody gets the impression that all Utah cops are like that, though. We had about six of 'em show up at the last U of Utah swing club. I thought for sure they'd ask us to take it inside or something, since it was pretty late and we were playing swing music really close to a residential neighborhood, but they just wanted to watch. Apparently some of them had heard the music and called their friend cop, who's into swing dancing.

J

PS -- Sherri, if you're a yehoodite, send me a message, 'cause I lost the paper with your number on it.

From what I understand, they really were shouting Swing Heil!

My source in the P.D. said that everyone who writes a letter should include how the officer made each person feel. Tell them how he treated me. The other two cops were decent, but this guy was all up in my face, even when he saw that I could not breath. The officer's name was Sgt. Bailey. Let's get rid of him if we can.

Heh heh...yup, that was me. :) After getting walked out, I realized that it was JUST like in Swing Kids and the police busted the swing venue. The only thing I could think of was to proclaim our defiance as an inside joke (the best kind, of course).

Phew! What an exchange!!! I'm working on getting pics up as we speak. Including the two that I got of the police.

I'm not interested in frying pig, but I think a strict reprimand is in order. That was just way too cruel.

Woot!

The pictures are up!!!

There are a LOT of pictures, as I didn't do much screening, since each one had their own story to tell. Especially this one and this one.

The van from denver that was staying with Aurora said that they danced the rest of the night at Ron's. Did you guys have the sunday dance back at Dancesport?

Were there handcuffs involved?

Man, I miss out on all the cool stuff.

If anyone else has pics/digital video from the exchange and need a place to host them, PM me.

You guys did a great job with the exchange, by the way.

Nope, we never made it to another "offical" dance for the rest of the exchange. From that point we formed the Salt lake Underground Lindy Klub (SULK), and went dancing at Rons till the wee hours of the morning and had some massive "Mafia" games and some secret garage blues dancing back at Kaia's parents place.

Wow, Utah is a tough place to dance, a 2am curfew for dancing. This slaps of the movie footloose. Well, I m glad that you and Tyler didn t get arrested. And that no sound equipment was placed under evidence . Now that you got the newspapers and the little bird in the major s house, it should all disappear soon. Anyhoot, since you are getting such coverage, have you tried getting that ordinance repealed? It might save you or other swingers some headaches later on. Just a thought

We will be working on getting the whole ordinance revoked during this whole trial. I have the West Coast dancers working with me as well. With any luck this should all be resolved by next year's exchange. We are all fighting to get rid of this thing. Salt Lake says that they want to be seen as a normal city like any other in the country, if that is true, then this ban will be revoked so they don't look so stupid anymore. It is a great place to live, other than the anal government here.

I've got over a hundred pictures on my computer now, waiting to be sorted and renamed to something other than their number. Should be available tonight sometime. Wombat has graciously offered to host since I am a lazy schmuck who hasn't finished his website yet (not even close).

Okay, some new info regarding the case...

The laws the citation is for violating:

9.04.100 Hours Of Operation Restrictions:

It is unlawful for any person to conduct or maintain, allow or permit any dance, whether within a dance hall licensed by this chapter or any restaurant, tavern, private club, public or private school, between the hours of two o'clock (2:00) A.M. and eight o'clock (8:00) A.M. of any day. This restriction shall not apply to dancing at annual graduation activities organized or sponsored by public or private schools as defined in section 9.04.010 of this chapter. (Ord. 69-94 3, 1994: prior code 9-3-4)

and

5.02.010 License Required To Transact Business:

It is unlawful for any person to engage in or carry on any business within Salt Lake City, for the transaction or carrying on of which a license is required, without first taking out or procuring a license required for such business. (Ord. 37-99 3, 1999: prior code 20-1-1)

The whole business license one is pretty crappy though- the studio has a business license... and WE aren't a business, so???

Letters should be addressed to Judge Iwasaki c/o Justice Court, 333 South 200 East Salt Lake City, Ut 84111

Be sure to list on the letter as the defendant.

Also, If participants have been to other dance exchanges/conventions that offer all night dancing, they should state that they have attended other dance conventions and THEY ALL offer dancing all night it is the standard in the industry. Dancers expect conventions to offer this feature. It is part and parcel of what attracts people to go to dance conventions.

(still send a copy via email or something to us too!)

If convicted, this would mean either 120 days in jail, or a 3600 fine!!!!

Did you collect money? Then you're a business.

This is why you always, ALWAYS check with the cops before doing a big event.
