Okay, I've had enough with the chocolate covered BS of a dance community I have been involved with. In AA, they say the first step is admitting you have a problem. Well, I have been involved with the perverse afterparty crap long enough. I am saying right here and right now that I do not…

I personally don't see the relationship between "bad" blues dancing and debauchery. Even the pump and grind kind, the x-rated kind. I don't know much about blues dancing, so I'm sure I do the "nasty" variety, but I do know 99 of the time I'm not thinking about sex. Ask me about the other 1 another time...
I went to my first afterhours party this weekend in Dallas, and I drank and danced a lot...with girls, with guys, by myself, with a wall...who knows? I was feeling the music...it was good. Now what anyone else thought about it is another story, but I'm not responsible for that.
I only thought you were a great dancer, really. I got the majority of dances with you there so I should know. I just loved your style babe.

The one photograph of my one public smooch during an exchange. I am fully chastised. :P This was during the extremely unofficial late-Sunday-night drunken marauding through the French Quarter. See, i'm not totally uptight. :) It was a spontaneous lighthearted moment... yes, we are both laughing, and yes, Mihai's face is very funny.
 alcohol is de debol. and that's all i've got to say about that.

I just read this entire thing from 1-7 so it's time to put my .02 in
I started blues dancing at 16 while illegally working in my cousin's juke joint in a small town in OK. The ladies there would grab me and dance and my cousin said just go with it. Well, I didn't like it.
Fast forward to last year and LOLX. There was more debauchery than at one of Caligula's parties. After that, when I went out of town and danced people would ask where I was from and I reply Tulsa. An immediate response was "did you go to Your exchange?". That actually made me upset that one event overshadowed the members and the reputation of the scene. Granted we cannot change the past, LOLX has been done. But Danny is right, we need to make this fun and enjoyable again for those who were turned off by the latter. I might be a newbie to this whole "lindy Lovin'" But I love to Lindy and I now really love to blues. so can we find a common ground?

One thing to point out there - they weren't even dancing either ...

Hmm ...
I made my reptuation in the lindy scene, in part, by being a big partier. It was amazingly fun, flitting off from city to city each weekend, dancing, partying, and reveling to no end ... but something I found in all this partying was an emptiness ... it's part of the reason why I took my hiatus from lindy.
There was a distinct moment when I was at a party at an exchange and I looked around and, though it was debauchery, what I saw wasn't disgusting or gross or crass. It was sad, heartbreaking. I was surrounded by people who were desperate to connect with other people in a meaningful way and instead of finding that meaning, they were connecting in a shallow and superficial way, trying to find meaning in meaningless physicality.
At that moment, I left the exchange.
I didn't need to fill my life with that kind of emptiness anymore, and it made me more determined than ever to leave the lindy scene for a while and find my center, to get away from that party element ...
In any case, I think that's where a lot of the debauchery comes from in exchange-land ... people are trying to fill their lives with meaning and physical connections seem to be a easy way to do that ... I would hope that people would grow out of it ...

fascinating how the wheel turns... just because you saw desperation, and emptiness doesn't mean it was actually there, nor that any/everyone there felt the same or that any of those individuals ever will "grow out of it" as you so patronizingly put it.
be careful, chef. your epiphany is only your own perception, and you should remember and respect that.

Yeah I know it's my perception but I also checked in with a few other people after this event and they basically saw the same thing ...
And as far as where the "grow out of it" comment comes from, most of the people I've seen at these parties have tended to be in their late teens and twenties. I have yet to see someone in, say, their late 40's doing body shots at an after hours party at an exchange ...

at the mermaid parade fundraiser,
you woul have seen that. but it wasn't an
after hours party at an exchange,
it wasn't even after hours!
it was quite theatrical, done to to raise money
and less "let's get wasted."
hehe, "justified debauchery."8)
at any rate, seems as if a few people
have had a few "this sh t isnt' for me anymore"
moments. i've been there, for sure.
but i still like being theatrical from time
to time. i mean, after all, i had a party
where people got nekkid!
it was for art...er..."justified nudity"!
it's hard not to judge those that may
be going through a phase or taking
part in things that arenn't for you anymore.
it's surely valid, and dare i say necessary for
growth to take your perceptions
and figure out what your reactions mean
to you and for you, especially in terms
of how you "define" yourself in a social context.

I find your inflexibility frustrating Kalman ... I have never hosted a party at an exchange or afterhours event. Participated in, of course, but never hosted. And if you just want to pigeonhole me into a neat little box in your mind, fine, that's your perogative. People can change, and if you think someone can't, then I don't know what to tell you.

Martin, I'm happy for you. I knew you before you 'went wild' and like that you've swung back the other way somewhat. I'm sure your gorgeous gal appreciates it, too.
And people, I'm sure we all have our fair share of tales we could spill from after-hours parties, but let's NOT. People have to go through stuff. People are funny that way. I now know several dancers that are desperately trying to get away from the bad reps they got by going crazy at one or more of these parties. I'm not even one of them, and yet I still think it's unfair to brand them with a scarlet letter A. This isn't the Salem Witch Trials era. Let it go, please.

That has a lot of truth. It is like drinking Coke when you are thirsty. Feels great at the moment, nothing like it... however, leaves just as thirsty if not more so afterward.
So the solution is to keep drinking Coke until you find an owasis of water. (which is what I am doing)

Thing is, I don't want to prove you wrong. I've made those changes in myself and that's proof enough for me. If people out there want to sit back and wait for proof, that's fine. Sometimes people need to see proof of something before they believe it and I understand that.
