How to chrome yourself! FLOOR & SHOE RELATIONSHIPS 2004

FLOOR AND SHOE RELATIONSHIPS by Fiftynites (from the Yehoodi Website, deleted from Yehoodi.com when they got a new server, lost on my pc somewhere, but luckily found on Google 2004 as it was copied to the tcswing.com website in 2001) A couple of years ago, I asked a very good local dancer…

I need to chrome a pair of cheap shoes ASAP, but I can't figure out where I can buy the leather from to do it (I live in Asheville, NC which is a smallish town). What sort of places aside from leather warehouses (which I don't think we have here) carry small bits of the right kind of leather? Thanks!

I haven't found any places online that will sell a sheet - but try these guys:

http://hidehouse.com/

They seem to have a lot of variety though will charge 15 (which is still cheaper than what I can get the sheets for in the city if the prices are the same for chrome). Looks like you'll have to call them and ask specifically about chrome leather.

Do you know how awkward it is to have a political argument with a naked man?

A friend went to a tailor shop (where they do alterations, etc) and asked if they had any scraps of suede leather. The man behind the counter gave the person two suede elbow patches which they took home, traced the bottom of the shoe, trimmed and then glued to the bottom of their shoes. Worked great.

I just got a dozen sheets of thick chrome leather I'd like to sell in order to break even on it all. For only 5 for a pair of shoes or sneakers, and the instructions above, you can chrome yourself!

I can bring some to Frim Fram on Thursdays or Swing 46 on Wednesdays. I won't have time to ship or make other arrangements-sorry. PM me if you want.

Alan Hall has this new product:

ADVERSTISMENT

HALL S PIVOT INSERT-SOLE SHOES (PISS)

Tired of shoe-grabbing sticky/tacky-tight dance floors? Tired of achy ankles and sore knees? Try the revolutionary new (not the same thing) Hall s PISS. Taking advantage of space-age, microscopic ball-bearing technology, the Hall s PISS has a built-in, freely-turning, circular sole section which lies directly under the ball of the foot. No more single-spins when you want to do two, three, or more. Wearing a pair of Hall s PISS, beginner WCS dancer, Gigi Gyro, set a world record of 643 spins in 30 seconds while leaving no scorched spot on the floor. Think about it that s 1,286 RPMs, faster by far than your car engine turns at idle. How can this be possible? (You may ask) Well, the foot turns freely while the amazing PISS circular sole section DOES NOT. You too can do what Gigi did while dancing on factory or warehouse floors, rough concrete anywhere, on driveways covered with fresh macadam seal-coat or even in a Blues club where the floor has been layered with a multi-year accumulation of spilled drinks, gum gobs and ground-in Taco droppings. Hall s Piss is a miracle in modern dance shoe technology. You no longer need to ask, How s the floor? You just walk in, and start dancing effortlessly and painlessly on miserably sticky floors while your astounded green-with-envy friends can only sit and watch.

The standard PISS model is moderately priced to sell, but also available, at a slightly increased price, is the PISS with an Adjustable Sole section (ASS). These ASS equipped shoes, have tiny replaceable batteries which magnetize or demagnetize the thin layer of ferrous particle-laden fluid which surrounds the microscopic ball-bearings in the Hall s PISS. Magnetism changes the viscosity of the fluid, and, as a result, changes the PISS ASS s ease of rotating. The PISS ASS has an adjustment dial cleverly concealed in the tongue of the each shoe. Yes! You can individually program your ASS s to turn and/or spin either quickly or slowly, depending on your personal styling needs.

Aww, hey now... don't confuse broke for cheap. Some of us are struggling just to get into venues, let alone pay for shoes. (Although this thread will help.) 30 may be a good investment, but you have to have some money to make an investment. Agreed, uneven floors are a very, very bad idea, but people resorting to shoe-substitutes aren't necessarily cheap and lazy. -m(tg)

If you have the money to go out, you have the money to put aside to chrome some shoes. Not having the money to do both immediately doesn't entitle you to ruin the floor for other folks.

Hey Mr. Ingbar, oh master of NYC foot soles. I want to "chrome" my girl's dance-shoes, but she is a die-hard vegan and is very against using any sort of leather or suede or anything like that. Is there some sort of artificial man-made suede alternative you could recommend [and where I could either find some or have the shoes soled?]

Thanks in advance, --R

and as an added bonus, it already includes some pretty hardcore adhesive on the back.

be careful, though, as this is slicker than chrome leather. on some really fast floors, it would take someone with the balance of a tightrope walker to stay upright in new moleskin shoes.

I'm pretty sure most shoe adhesive is derived from animals in some way - a quick search on some vegan sites brought up Bison Marathon glue as being 'convincingly vegan' but looks like you'll have to ship it from Europe. Enjoy!

Since I eat cows, I never thought of using non-meat derived soles, other than plastic I got from an old garbage can, but that's way too slick for anything but concrete. Maybe someone else has some other ideas.

Anyone in NYC have extra suede I can buy off you? I have to chrome a pair of sneakers before I hit the road on Friday - may need help as I am the kind of person to glue my hands together.

I'll be at Fram on Thursday.

To purchase chrome leather scraps:

http://www.brettunsvillage.com/leather/scrap/scraps.htm

I've used on one occasion drum skin leather (which is goat leather) on a pair of shoes. It lasted about a year. It is kind of dry though.
