Quote ABC has ordered six episodes of the US version of BBC's series Strictly Come Dancing, per Variety. The show takes eight celebrities and pairs them with professional dancers, and after learning how to dance "properly", they compete in a live ballroom dancing competition, sequins, feathers and all. BBC Entertainment will produce. The project, which will be renamed for US audiences, is on target to join the schedule this summer.
Meanwhile, Dick Clark Productions and Simon Fuller are working on a somewhat similar project for Fox called Dance Nation, also per Variety.

It will depend on the caliber of celebrities they can pull in. In a worst case scenario, who would they get? They need eight celebrities. I nominate Gary Coleman, Tony Danza, and Charo.

Down here in Australia, we have "Dancing With the Stars", basically the same concept, and "Strictly Dancing" which is supposed to be a serious dance comp show featuring different styles of dance. They are all ballroom styles(Latin, Jive etc), except the "Hip Hop/Funk" section. You have to see that to believe it. Imagine Arthur Murray getting jiggy with it!!

There's this great show on UPN called Dance 360. I love it! It's a hip-hop face off. Those of you who've been to Lindyfest and listened in on the culture sessions with Kwikstep and Rockafella will see exactly what they were talking about in the moves people do and the format of the show.
I also love it because everyone competes, white, black, hispanic, asian, thin, fat, short, tall...it's an all encompassing program, revolving around applause, no violence or pants hanging off the ass. Just great television and competition, minus the stereotypes.

we'll be taping it since we will be swing dancing to a live band in the Garden at Tavern on the Green (7 PM - midnight). Band plays until about 10 PM, then dj music.

I am SO excited about this. It is really going to be THE thing to watch. I have a Wednesday night west coast swing class and we are all skipping out to watch. And the teacher is going to be very disapointed when her studio is empty this evening. But we all told her we simply MUST watch this show.

Oh and did anyone notice also on ABC that there was dancing last night as well? I was watching that cop drama they had on last night. You know the one with the blind police officer who runs around the city solving crimes and even carries a gun. Well at the end of the show his wife drags him off to dance class. It was very romantic even if his was reluctant to go. I don't think he was reluctant because he was blind but it was more like he was too much of a man for it. But he did it anyway to make his wife happy. At the end of the show they show him dancing with his wife and they looked like they were doing international silver foxtrot to boot. I wasn't really sure but outside falling down in a moment of drama he was really good. I'm not sure if it was in time either but the steps were correct and evenly timed. I would think that in real life it would be easier for a blind person to learn American standard but you know. And another thing about that show on ABC. The studio they were dancing in looked very familiar. I think I may have seen it in a differnt show before. So there is a lot of dancing on ABC I guess and I think it is just wonderful.

I can't help but be a more of a realist. I dont think this show will be THE show to watch. It probably won't do much for the ballroom dance community outside of their own circles. Most people probably will look at it for the same reason people watched "The Surreal Life," and "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here." But it should still be fun to watch

yeah... i'm super excited about this show... so i'm gonna hang at home and watch the first two weeks worth... and then we'll see if I skip my dance lessons for this show or not after that.

Totally not my type. I feel bad for poor little Kelly Monaco. I thought she had the most technically proficient dance so far even if it was way over the top.

It doesn't surprise me that Joey is the best. As far as I know, he has the most dance background. Have to sync with your bandmembers has to teach you to learn spot-on moves. He's the only one who really got the latin "feel" with the hands and everything. Evander was a hoot. He looked like he was having fun.

I agree - I expected Joey Mac to be the best. His footwork was on - and he did lead. All that experience with choeography! Not bad for 5 weeks of partner dance training. And I liked that he called it "real dancing".
Dancing With The Stars (Was Dancing on Network TV?!?!?)
Albeit ballroom dancing, but still...

I've heard of this before. So it's coming to the US this summer? That's hot. Ballroom or not, it should be mighty fun to watch.
What an excellent idea. It would do wonders for the dance community. I wonder what kind of celebs they can pull up for it.
Well it could either do wonders or make us look like complete crazies. Oh wait, we already do a good job of that ourselves.
But seriously, I'm eager to see what becomes of this.

Dude, I was so thinking of Gary Coleman also. Charo would be awesome. She was the coolest person on Surreal Life.

Who is watching? so far, the only thought I have about the dancing is Joey M is still HOT!
I'm watching. :-)
isn't Joey M hot!!!
and the last couple was horrible!

Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
Nope. Liking John and Charlotte right now.
Would like to see them do something outside a routine in the final week or something though...like where they have to lead and follow or something...
Just a thought.

I'm really not seeing any interaction with the music from any of the couples. It makes the whole thing feel kind of stilted.
Yeah, but I didn't like how that was opposed to hip hop not being real dancing. That didn't sit well with me.
