I just realized that all of the guy celebs did the cha-cha, and all of the female celebs did the waltz. I guess that it makes sense, because in the cha-cha the guy can just stand there, wiggle his bum, and give his partner a firm stance to do all of her flamboyant spins and gyrations off of. On the other hand, in the waltz, the female mostly just needs to swoop around a lot and keep her arms straight. (Note: When I say "needs" I mean as in the context of this show.)
I hope that once they start booting couples, that they fill the extra time by having the remaining couples do two dances, instead of just random filler.

Although I don't ballroom dance, I still have my comments.
Trista was not on beat, but that wasn't really her fault. If the lead is off beat, you will be off beat as a follower. That being said, I actually enjoyed watching them the most.
However, oh my god Cyd Charise legs on Rachel Hunter. DAMN!
Joey looked pretty good. I thought that John O'Hurley and his partner looked obscene. It was very much a "I am standing here and she is rubbing herself against me." That is not dancing to me (unless pole dancing counts).
I understand that they picked cha cha for the ladies to get a chance to show off, but oh my. :pukeymae:
Kelly Monaco was totally stiff, but I thought she really had the moves right, even if she did look like a startled deer.
Evander just cracked me up. Both he and John need to be lighter on their feet b/c they were both stomping around.

it's typical ballroom and what I expected. I think all the dancers did a good job for only 5 weeks. I also felt sorry for the gal who got a 13. Didn't deserve it. I wanna vote her 'In". Although I like Evander, his performance was the worst. I guess Joey is the most experienced, but I certainly enjoyed looking at Rachael and Trista.

I could watch joey shake his bum all night and be happy.... well... as long as I had something to distract me from time to time so I didn't get too use to seeing it, then he would be like any other dancer that i know, and then it looses it's charm.
so, yeah, evander totally the worst in my book as well... and they didn't choose the songs and dances based on what would make the pro look good... hopefully they will look good with any dance. I liked John's pro the best because she made him lead her and she wasn't the one leading the dance. I did not like their dance the best though.
and yes, Rachel's legs go forever, man... good thing I'm not a lesbian, I would totally be starstruck.

I'm willing to give Kelly Monaco the benefit of the doubt since she's a soap star and they have a fanatical fanbase...
or maybe nando is just more lenient because she's a playboy bunny? ;)
She was a Playboy bunny??
Damn! Well, she's still probably getting the boot next week. Her score is too low.
I predict Evander will probably be in first place, just due to freak factor. Plus I think this is more difficult for him than the others, since footwork and momentum in boxing is so different compared to Ballroom dancing. For him it probably is like learning another language.

wha?
do you mean the boxing comment.
For Example.
Not that I'm an afficionado, but when a boxer punches, he uses his whole body starting from the foot. You punch with your right, your right foot turns in toward the body. I would think that some ballroom type moves like spot turns would be hard for someone who's been boxing his whole life to comprehend.
He had the most fun and most of the viewing public may not be looking at these couples with the same eye that we may. So I still think he's my early pic to win. Unless the NKOTB fanclubs come out in force.

Danny Terrio to Never Gonna Dance (Fred and Ginger closed on B'way w/i six weeks! :-() to Mad Hot Ballroom. Come to think of it, I think the 5th graders danced better than the "stars."

I don't know if anyone read the news the other day, but "Dancing With The Stars" was called the first new hit of the Summer. Ratings for ABC were great.
The bad news is that the demographics skewed toward people in their 50's. Not an appealing figure for TV Execs.
Originally posted Wednesday, June 8, 2005 (6 years ago)
It sure looks like a hit. Although I'd rather see amateur couples competing, as the did in the original Dance Fever, this is at least dancing. And it promotes social/touch dancing, which is cool, even if most folks never heard of the "stars" before the show.
So what dances will be highlighted tomorrow? Who is your pick to win at the end of six weeks?
Quote TVG: OK, Joey. Why did you want to do Dancing with the Stars?
McIntyre: I don't know. I think I hit my head on a rock. [Laughs] My initial reaction was, "Wow, this is cool. I get to learn all these dances." Two days before I got the call, my wife and I were going to take tap-dance lessons together because she used to tap-dance and I always wanted to try. I said I'd do it and then I was lying in my bed that weekend [after the dance class] and I was literally paralyzed. I felt like a jerk, but I called my lawyer saying, "I just can't do [the show]."
TVG: What changed your mind?
McIntyre: The producers got on the phone, and they are very charming. The BBC is producing it, so you've got a British guy saying, "Joey, it's ballroom." I'm saying, "But what if I lose to Evander Holyfield in a dance competition?" He's like, "It's ballroom dancing. You've never done ballroom." It's true, it's ballroom. It ain't hip-hop. It ain't the New Kids' dancing; it's a totally different world.
However, I had to laugh at his description of the quickstep as (paraphrased) "like the waltz, but faster."
Originally posted Wednesday, June 8, 2005 (6 years ago)
I gotta believe you about the quickstep. I couldn't find where they said it. Are there two dances tonight?
I know all the dances strictly ballroom form:
Cha Cha
Fox Trot
Jive
Paso Doble
Quickstep
Rumba
Samba
Tango
Viennese Waltz
Waltz

Quote TVG: What are you performing this week?
McIntyre: This week is the quickstep. It is sort of like [the waltz that] the women were doing last week. But let me tell you, it is quick. It is so fast, it's ridiculous and the footwork is ridiculous and you've got to keep your frame up and a really tight back.
Originally posted Wednesday, June 8, 2005 (6 years ago)
Joey danced a quick step tonight to what I would say is a Jive song. And he was very much out of his window. That was my take on that. Oh and I am shocked to see a woman wear white during a Latin performance.

why? women wear white for latin ballroom competitions all the time
Originally posted Wednesday, June 8, 2005 (6 years ago)
Well they usually wear red or black for Latin. And my teacher says that you get higher marks that way. The white dress should be saved for the waltz to showcase a ladie's elegance. But she can do what she wants. There's just no need for white in a passionate rhumba. I would say blackfor that and red for tango.

Yeah, the music definitely sucked. My roomie was upstairs and at one point she yelled down, "What the hell are you watching?? That music is AWFUL!"
I thought John and Charlotte were definitely the best tonight, but I don't really know much about ballroom...
yeah, none of those songs were a rhumba. with all the excellent rhumba music out there, why oh why did they use those songs?!?! also, i agree that john and charlotte were the best tonight, though joey and whomever did really well too. evander looked AWFUL, as did kelly.

The first one I saw was John and Charlotte, and at first I was like "What the heck is this?!" But watching the rest of the dancing, they were tight. I'm not a fan of the quickstep, but whatever they did, they did it well. While Kelly is probably the hottest chick out there (although given some time, Evander's parter could easily overtake her), she didn't dance no rhumba. That was called foreplay. I wanted them to leave, but I decided, as was alluded to earlier, that the American public probably doesn't know much about dancing and therefore doesn't look at the same stuff we do. I didn't see Trista dance, and I never got to see last week's show, but what they saw were some fun moves and a hottie, and that's appealing enough to most people.

I like how when the judges give their honest, sometimes painfully so, opinions of the amateurs, the audience boos. Like they know [bleep!] about ballroom. I assume the judges know a bit more than I do about what a foxtrot is supposed to look like.
Anyway, I guess that's part of the fun is the bitchy judges and people hating them.

I saw about five rhumba steps in each dance. I actually like watching rhumba, but that sure wasn't rhumba, and all the music blew chunks.
My non-dancer friends were complaining about the music too.

Well, there's sexy white, and then there's Ice Capades white. Trista was the latter. She already has a hard time being "sexy" with her constant smiling, and the ginormous flower in her hair didn't help things much. The backless black number that she wore during her "practice" session would have been much more appropriate.
Joey: Looked like he was having fun, and did decently with the mechanics. I wasn't quite as impressed as I was last week, but he's still my slight favorite.
Rachel: I was much more impressed with her this week than last. Then again, maybe I was just mesmerized by her legs. She's pretty flexible for a non-dancer.
John: If I had no idea who any of these people were, and I was told that only one of them was an actual ballroom dancer, I would guess it was him. He has the best overall "look" and has a good mix of formality and fun. I love them chemistry between him and his partner.
Kelly: She reminds me of the girl you always see grinding on the dancefloor at a club. Might not have an ounce of rhythm, but the guys don't care because she shakes her ass so well. I'll give her props for looking so hot in her outfit, though. She's also the biggest camera whore. Whenever the camera pans over the group, she's always the one mugging and waving.
Evander: Gah. He was totally off beat, did most of his moves a half-beat before his partner, and stared at her the entire time as if to help him remember the moves, instead of looking in the direction of travel, like you're supposed to do. You could see him counting in his head.
Trista: Just too smiley. Yes, it's a sexy dance. Other contestants are married, and they're not complaining about it. She has the least "celebrity" of anyone on the show, so I'm not suprised that her audience votes were so low.
Lastly, I thought that the "social dance" bit at the end was hilarious. All of that training, and all they can do is side-step back and forth. You could see her partner trying to talk her into some moves, and she just refused and just kept on swaying. Even the contestants themselves admit that they're learning all flash and no substance. It's been mentioned multiple times that they often go an entire dance without a single basic. Granted, I'm still mildly impressed, but it's still amusing.
