Inspired by the Pet Peeves thread, I remembered something a very very cute girl told me after a dance we had QuoteA dance is the most fun either if your partner is cute or if he's a good dancer. And you're both! This is about a year ago but it still warms my heart thinking about it. So, has…

Oh, that reminds me. People sometimes mistake me for Lindy Greer. Now, I don't really see it because she's friggin Lindy Greer and I am not. Nevertheless that is a sweet sweet thing to hear. Usually when someone says to me "Wow, you remind me of Lindy" it's not so much a compliment as an observation, but I have decided that the true meaning of the statement is in the heart of the beholder. I therefor take it to mean "Wow, you're the greatest dancer in the land!".
I love it when follows watch me. To receive a compliment on my dancing from another follow is one of the coolest things. I know that I usually watch the boys so when a follow holds my attention I know it's a real good thing.

Quoted from "Marcelo" Also dunno whether to take this as a compliment or not, but at DLX someone I was meeting shook my hand and said "Oh! I thought you were BLACK!"

I can't think of any specific compliments from a follow, which is a shame.
But one fairly recent dance I can think of, my first dance the Blues club on Bourbon Street Sunday late night during LindyGras. I had a incredibly deep, emotionally moving steamy dance with a follow I've never danced with before. Very few words were said afterwards although you could tell from the look on our faces how amazing the last 5 minutes were...
About 15 minutes later I got waved over to a table of gawkers by the dance floor. They wanted to tell me how hot we were on the dance floor and ask how long I've been dating the girl I danced with earlier.

At CTLX during the outdoor dance--"your spins are amazing--you can even spin on this!" This was referring to concrete. The lead was being overly kind, but I'll take it.
I've had a few leads mention wanting a shower after we blues danced. That may not be a compliment.

Okay, our best compliment ever happened after we'd been dancing randomly at a casino in Atlantic City to a great trad jazz band. An aged black man (I'm guessing 85-ish) walked up to us and said, "Now, now, don't take this the wrong way, but, I ain't never seen white people dance like that!"
A very close second: when Marcelo posted that a dance he'd had with me was one of his best five dances ever.

First time I danced with Virginie, she said: "Wow! You are tres amazing! That was ze best dance ever!! Here is the key to my hotel room. Meet me there in 30 minutes."

Just thought of another one. Actually, I'm getting more used to getting this one. But here is a more extreme version of it from a fairly new dancer in Toronto who had a boisterous nature, was very blunt, expressive, and knew sign:
I dance with her. At the end of the song (all exchanges in sign)
I: Thank you (usual)
She: "You're deaf?!?"
I: Yes, you sign?
She: "YOU ROCK!"
Hard to explain, but that girl's nature was very very expressive. She really signed those things with more expression than I'd normally see from a full-blown ASL deaf person, in a good way. I'll never forget her.

This goes down as one of the most surreal moments of my life: After a dance with a really great follow on a 5th Saturday dance at K2 (an after Boilermaker's party), I was getting a drink of water when Skye Humphreys walks over to me and says something to the effect of, "Man that was a really cool dance you just had. I enjoyed watching you two for the entire song"
I think i just sorta babbled in reply, dumbstruck. One, he doesn't know me at all; Two, he's one of the people I love to watch everytime he gets on the dance floor.
(really, it was all the follow. she was amazing. Forget who she was though, she was only visiting DC)
I felt like doing the Wayne's World "We're Not Worthy" thing

"your foot work is so cool... oh yeah, and sorry i made you run smack into that lady. I was so into the walk to the floor, I wasn't paying attention. I know you felt badly, but ultimately that was pretty funny."

Earlier in the night, I had enviously watched an incredible dancer lead his follow in one of the most amazing blues dances I'd ever seen. Later, I danced blues with the same lead. After we finished, he said, "That was great. I love it when a girl struts her stuff!"

I love Shakespeare. My friend loves Shakespeare. So when he said something similar to, "Dancing with you is like dancing with Shakespeare's vocabulary!" after a blues dance, I was totally taken by surprise and completely tickled pink by the comparison! swoon (please, no Shakespeare snob critiques of this statement)
Short Dave once told me, "Wow! Where have you been all my life?!" which made me very happy... until I heard him say it to three other girls
I got a thumbs up and a side grin from Steven Mitchell this weekend after his jazz class. The moment is marked on my calendar.

Just remembered, I was at a hangar dance a couple of years ago and this old gentleman came up and thanked me for dancing. It just made him happy to see all of us. Turns out he was a veteran from WWII.
And he was thanking me???
Also, a couple of years ago, I went out to visit my grandmother for Thanksgiving. She still does folkdancing at 80-something. I danced with her (ECS) for a song and she mentioned, "it's funnny there are all these guys my age who say they know how to swing but I can't follow them. But I have no trouble following you!"

Best compliments ever:
After dancing for about 7 months I took a Steven and Virginie workshop. I danced with Virginie toward the end of the weekend to a song that was easily 40 bpm faster than what I could comfortably dance. I pulled it off (somehow) and afterwards Virginie says, "You keep it up. You're scary! You're going to be really good."
At Cheap Thrills. I danced with Kathy on Thursday night, and then again on Sunday night. After our Sunday night dance, Kathy says "You're amazing!" I could have died a happy man.

One of my favorite Connecticut leaders, who moved away, used to love trying new things on me. That was always a compliment in itself, but when my sister started dancing he said "if your sister gets to be as good as you, you two will be unstoppable." That was nice.
A well known instructor and also a close friend who's dancing I like have both recently told me they love watching me dance. That one makes me blush, especially because they don't have to say it, but choose to anyway.

At All-Bal weekend, an oldtimer I really respect came up to my partner and I and told us congratulations on our dancing. He also told me that I reminded him of how his wife danced back in the day....
I was on cloud 9 after that! My partner and I didn't even make it to finals in the comp that night, but it didn't matter. Getting some positive reinforcement from a dancer I truly respect is all I needed :D
What's the best compliment you've received at a dance?

Wow! For an old guy you're not too bad. I mean, you don't suck nearly as much as I thought you would when you asked me to dance.

Yeah, that happens to Kalman all the time.

At CTLX during the outdoor dance--"your spins are amazing--you can even spin on this!" This was referring to concrete. The lead was being overly kind, but I'll take it.

"that was sooo butter"
not that i deserve these or anything, but they always make me feel really good! i just say thank you and try to remember how far i still have to go...
"wow you ve only been dancing (x amount of time)?!"
"i love watching you dance!"
"niiice!"
"are you a professional dancer?"
"i always love dancing with you because you re really good and your gum smells so good."

Well it was. Still is.
Oh wow, I so totally thought I was reading a post-Lindy exchange thread for a second.
"You look amazing dancing out there, and you do it in flip flops"
Orlando lead at last year's ORLX. :D
I danced with this girl I had just met. She asked me to marry her after the dance.
It's flattering but that's moving a little too fast.
"Ahhh... 15 more?"
and
"You dance very well" from international instructor. Hey, I'll take it.
"wow, that was a good dance" from damon stone "you're the best at leading that, even better than damon" from a sf follow

From a follow (who I'd been admiring and finally got up the courage to ask to dance): "Wow, you're a really good lead"
From the best west coast lead in syracuse: "Damn girl, you can move."
And still my favorite: "You're like dancing with a cloud"
