Earlier this year at work we were notified that our salaries would have to be frozen for at least a year, starting in July.

Today we were told that salary freezes would not be necessary after all, that the organization will be able to compensate in other ways for the cuts to our funding (which didn't turn out to be as severe as we were anticipating.)

Wahoo!

I was feeling just generally a little down today, then found out the women's magazine that shares the floor of the offices where I'm working this month is having one of their periodical beauty-product clearance sales (manufacturers send a wide range of stuff to magazines constantly and it clutters up the place).

I got there late, when prices dropped to 50 cents each for everything from haircolor to fixatives to foundations to lip/eye/nail/cheek color. I had 14 cash on me and spent 11. Now I'm plowing through it all and seeing how much I'll actually want to keep once I've seen it on me. Very girly, very fun.

I'm much more cheerful now. :)

ok, i have to share this. my old mechanic (who had screwed up a couple of things in the past) told me that my oil leak was unfixable for less than the total value of my car (probably about 500). so i left it alone. i've been limiting my drives to one hour and under because if the thing finally lets go i don't want to be super far away.

well, the leak's gotten worse and i decided to try a new mechanic for a second opinion. the verdict? oil pressure sensor - 107 including parts and labor. yes, there's still another small leak but it's really minor and the car will be safe to drive distances again! new hampshire, here i come...

Today Nikon contacted me to tell me that I placed in the top 100 in this year's Nikon Small World Competition. The annoying thing is that I won't find out until this fall how I placed. If my image makes the calendar, that would mean a second trip out to NYC this fall for the awards banquet. I wish I knew this info now so that Emysoo and I could plan accordingly for our NYC vacation trip, but it seems they want to keep it a secret until their press release.

That sounds like a guilt-free blast. So jealous.

I'm facing similar car issues, so I know how much of a relief this must be. So glad you have a more reliable vehicle now.

That's great! A friend of mine also made top 100 -- the competition is on!

It's not my best work, but I chose it thinking it would lend itself to a calendar page. I call it "dried toluidine blue on a petri dish" (it's actually just lab garbage).

Congrats! But are two trips to NYC (to smoke a pipe and drink a beer with me) really that bad?

As I was leaving a restaurant on the Rye beach at lunchtime today, I got into a crunch at the doorway that had me nose to nose with a blonde man with sharp features. I looked away then looked back because he looked familiar, and he was still looking at me. I looked away, and again, he was still looking at me. Then I said, "Are you that antiques guy?" and he said in one breath, "Yes, Leslie Kino, glad to meet you. Take care."

Not quite as cool as the cute 30-year-old French chef asking for my number on Monday night at the Bastille Day Ball. :P

I'm in an A-Listed experimental dance theater production this weekend! All three shows have sold out.

Quoted from "Minneapolis City Pages"
This annual event features new works by four of the Twin Cities' boldest and brightest choreographers... In Vanessa Voskuil's "En Masse," 79 civilians of diverse ages, sizes, genders, and ethnicities, led by Voskuil herself, cycle through a range of crowd dynamics from reverie to anarchy in a mass folk dance.

Photos by Jim Smith.

This production has been a hell of a ride.

This was yesterday, but when at work at the Customer Service booth, I glanced over at the "Shift Leader in Charge" board and noticed my fellow new Shift Leader had his name up. I was told that we had no new signs for the signmaker to paint our names, but it looked like the reverse of an older sign. I went through the stack of signs, and there was my name. I got a little thrill seeing it, and proudly hung it up.

Also, today I got my c. 1915 Brooklyn Tip Tops custom-made baseball cap.

Got my first magazine cover. Look for the September 2009 issue of Tapissiers et D corateurs on your local newsstand. :dunno:

Even cooler though is that the director of the company Velcro (France division) contacted me and told me he uses my photo as his computer wallpaper.

This happened to a friend of mine, but it's still nifty:

On a recent trip, he lost his Blackberry, and it was his government work phone at that. Of course, it was password protected, but he was still freaking out. He spent weeks checking with the airport (where he thought he lost it) and every place he stopped on his trip to see if anyone found it.

He just found out a 15 year-old boy found it at the Jacksonville airport. The kid took it back home with him (to Manhattan) and took to the AT&T store, so they could trace it via the SIM card. They contacted my friend today to tell him they had the phone.

It's always cool when someone (especially a teenager) goes so far out of their way to do the nice thing. As soon as my friend gets a return address, he's sending the kid a gift card to Best Buy.

Just finished my first grad school exam. The class was surprisingly difficult and I was quite scared of the exam and the teacher warned us that we may not be able to finish the six problems in the 2.5 hours allotted so I studied like a madwoman for the past two weeks.

The teacher was a big liar and the test was totally easy.
