For my birthday, my friend Amy got me a $40 gift card to eBags.com, with the intention of it going towards a camera bag. I'm getting a bit overwhelmed by the selection, and would appreciate any guidance. Some specs: I have a Digital Rebel, the kit lens, plus one small-ish lens (the 50mm…
Anyone have experience with the Tenba? I was window-shopping for stuff at Helix on Saturday, and saw this bag there...and loved it. However, I decided not to buy it, since I figured it might be cheaper online.
Unfortunately, it was the same price in the store as online, so I should have just got it then. I am wondering if anyone has experience with Tenba v. Crumpler, etc.

The first review complains about a lack of flaps, etc. to protect against rain/dust ... but the other reviews didn't mention it. I think it's going to be a while before I need/want to carry a laptop with me along with my camera ... would you think this is too much bag for me if I just want to haul camera, lenses, flash, water bottle, etc.?

From playing with it at the store, the laptop sleeve isn't really that big, so I don't think it would bother you, OM. Did you watch the product video on the Amazon page? It's pretty helpful.
I really like how the camera gear portion is removable - so you can keep all your stuff packed in it, but take it out of the bag if you don't need to bring it with you.

I have the Tenba PG-17C. I'm not sure they make it any more but I really like it. It's basically a laptop bag and a camera bag that zip together to form one super-bag. It's sturdy, light, and it fits underneath the seat when I fly. It's not super-pretty like the new ones but it's basic and unassuming, which is all I really need.
Plus, if I take it for business travel, I can unzip the camera half and just take the laptop bag to the office, and vice versa for when I'm shooting afterwards.

Yeah, the video is cute, although I couldn't listen to the dialog ... one question: I saw the camera gear divider section listed as an "accessory" on that page. Does the 94 bag include that insert, or is that an "optional extra"?
It looks like it may work for me (I think I will pop along to B&H to feel it out first) - one of my primary requirements is to be able to change lenses without needing a surface on which to put the bag down. And I'm not a backpack person, so the messenger style is really what I've been looking at and had my eye on the Crumpler ... but this looks like it could be a lot more cost efficient ...
Like you, interested to hear from anyone who has actually used it ...

I just picked up the Tenba Large Messenger Bag at Helix in Chicago for 99 (minus 10 discount). I just got it back to the office, and so far, I love it. Of course, I haven't put any camera gear in it, but the bag is just as described. I really like how there is a zipper to get at the contents of the bag (i.e., camera body) without having to open the flap if you want. One other nice touch is that the strap is adjustable on both sides of the shoulder pad.
I will report back after having used the bag for a while. But so far, I am in love.

Anything new in the world of bags? I'm going to be headed to France at the end of April with my mother, who is also a photographer. I need something to get my gear there (my gear is my camera body and two lenses plus filters, charger and spare batteries; I may also be carrying a tripod for my mother, and her off-camera flash - she and I have the same camera, so we can share a lot of our gear).
I'm leaning towards Lowepro (the stealth reporter or the slingshot). We're not hiking, or switching hotels. The main schlepping will be from the airport to the train (we're heading to the South of France) but we will be staying in one hotel for our entire stay. So, I'm mostly looking for a carry-on for the plane (a smallish one, as I will have a small regular rolling bag for a carry on as well - yes, I'm a chronic over-packer).
I have a very small patagonia day pack that I use to carry my stuff during the day, but it's not good for dragging everything long distance.

Just FYI, within the past 6 months, most airlines have become REALLY strict about carry-on luggage (and luggage in general) when you fly to Europe. Unless you're flying first class, you are generally allowed ONE carry-on bag (or small roller bag) and a small handbag (your patagonia bag might qualify). So ideally (as mine does), your camera gear and camera bag should fit into your roller bag. You might want to think of the tripod going into your main luggage (bear in mind the size and weight restrictions there too).
They can insist on weighing your carryon, and if it's over the weight limit, they won't hesitate to make you repack to eliminate the additional carryon (been there - done that). Check the website of the airline you're using for their baggage allowance regulation.

thanks for the head's up. (I was already planning to check the airlines requirements - but I don't know the specific airline, yet; we're just in planning mode)

Still looking for a bag. I'm leaning towards this one: Pacsafe Camsafe 200. I know it will hold my gear because it's the same size as the Crumpler I already own (I'm not bringing the Crumpler, as it's very heavy/cumbersome and not secure). If I go with this bag, I'd pack it flat in my luggage, and carry my camera, lenses, and accessories on board in my carry on.
My only concern is this bag doesn't leave me a lot of left over room for non-camera things. I don't really want to have to carry a camera bag and a purse.

I recently discovered Clik Elite: http://www.clikelite.com/ Haven't bought one, yet, but I'm seriously considering it. I especially like that some have plenty of space to hold essentials while on a hike, traveling, etc. and some include a built-in hydration system.

I broke down a while ago and got a Kata DR-467 and I'm loving it. It's lightweight but very well padded, lockable, and perfect when you need that extra space for a hike, or instead of lugging a purse.

I've decided that this is a better thread to document my bag search than the "generic" digital photography one.
Anyway, I'm fairly certain I've decided which bag to get:

I haven't used the Tenba stuff, but I was looking at it at B&H last time I was there. It looks good and seems to be well-constructed.
For those that care, I recently posted about my new camera bag here, since I had forgotten all about this older thread.

I assume it includes it, since that bag at Helix was 99 and it had the insert.

Mugsy, are you still in love with this bag?
I really need to get a new bag ... prefer messenger style that's not too bulky. Going to head to B&H at lunchtime today to check some out
