We're super-excited about Frankie's new autobiography (co-written by our friend Cynthia Millman). We are hoping that Yehoodites around the US can work with us to promote the book in your communities. One effort we want to get out the door quickly relates to getting everyone to purchase the book on Amazon.com on May 26. Please read the following and pass along to your own local websites and email lists. Your help is very much appreciated.
Here's the message:
Mark your calendars: Purchase Frankie's Autobiography on May 26!
Dear FoF (Friend of Frankie),
As you may have heard, Frankie Manning's long-awaited autobiography is finally hitting the shelves sometime in April/May. Entitled Frankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy Hop, the book chronicles the life and times of this legendary lindy hopper and innovator of the airstep:
Quote Choreographer and Tony award winner, Frankie Manning recalls how his first tentative steps as a teenager at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom eventually led him to a career as chief choreographer and lead dancer for Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, who appeared on Broadway stages, Hollywood films, and stages around the world. He brings the Swing Era to life with recollections of the headliners as well as the dozens of uncelebrated dancers who helped to make the Lindy an international sensation. With collaborator, Cynthia Millman, Manning traces the evolution of swing dancing from those early days in Harlem through the post-War War II period until it was eclipsed by rock and roll, then disco.
The team at Yehoodi.com have been discussing with Frankie and his co-author Cynthia Millman cool ways to promote the book, from holding a big New York book launch, to helping coordinate book signings around the country, to a viral web campaign.
One idea that Frankie likes a lot is getting the entire swing community -- and the thousands more who have been touched by Frankie -- to all go to Amazon.com and purchase the book on May 26, which happens to be Frankie's birthday. What better gift to Frankie than seeing his autobiography pop to the top of the best-seller's list on Amazon on his birthday?
So if you've been planning on buying the book, we are asking that you hold off until May 26. If you have already pre-ordered the book, consider ordering another copy as a gift for a friend. If you know of others who might be thinking of getting the book, send them this message.
We'll be posting more information about the Ambassador of Lindy Hop book launch activities shortly. Thanks for your help in promoting this important document of lindy hop history.

I'm no slacker, I posted on the Knoxville board within 60 seconds of reading it here (in the earlier thread, no less). Anyway, we're in. I've already ordered a copy, but I'm considering a gift copy or two.

Is there a special time of day I should buy or is just the date ok? If I'm home online can I wear pajamas? Should I have it addressed to Texas Tommy NYC? :P

I'll be posting some banners and buttons that folks can put on their own websites, myspace pages and blogs to get the word out on this.
The publisher tells me that Amazon has been impressed with the number of pre-orders and thinks having a May 26 campaign is a great idea. We might even knock a few bucks off the purchase price, just on that day, as well as a few other incentives to get people to order the book!

Running a little late here, but I've added the announcement to a couple of SE forums, including swingdancenashville.com and lindyhop411.com (Tampa). We've already had the campaign going in Atlanta (aseda.org) and Knoxville (swingknoxville.org) for awhile now. Betcha nickel we'll get Frankie's story to the top!

In answer to Chuck Knuckles question:
Quote I had no problem finding Norma Miller's book, will Frankie's be a sell out?
The publisher of Frankie's autobiography, Temple University Press, has known about the May 26 Amazon.com event since Rik Panganiban and Dave Jacoby came up with this marvelous idea. Our editor has informed me that they ordered a second print run to be sure they will have enough books to meet demand. One thing that I learned about publishing, which was a surprise, is that it doesn't actually take all that long to print up a batch of books once all of the editing, designing, and typesetting (or whatever it's called in this day and age--compositing?) is finished. So there will be plenty of books.
Please know that Frankie is very much looking forward to this special birthday and thanks the international swing community in advance for this wonderful gesture (and I add my thanks, too). He will be teaching and celebrating his 93rd birthday on May 26th in France. Judy Pritchett, who is traveling with him, will use her laptop to keep Frankie posted on what's happening on Amazon and Yehoodi throughout the day.
