Many of you will know that I like Scotch. I have a couple of bottles of Scotch in my collection at home, not least thanks to a lovely group of Yehoodim who thought I needed a birthday present last year. :-) I've enjoyed it in the comforts of my own home, but I'd like to start taking it out with me. And to do so, I'll be needing a flask.
Here's where it gets tricky: I know exactly what flask I want. It belongs to Neal -- who got it at a thrift store, so that's no help. It's cylindrical, about 4 inches high (to fit into my little purse), and -- my favourite part -- the cap flips open to contain two sippingshotglasscupthingies. That's a pretty big deal to me, since I'd infinitely rather sniff and sip my Scotch than swig it directly from the flask.
I can't find a flask of this ilk anywhere when I search online. Searching for Round Flask gets me round-like-a-dartboard flasks. Cylindrical Flask gets me a lot closer, but everything I could find was 12ish oz, more like a thermos. (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Mark-Paul-10-Ounce-Hunters-Leather/dp/B00005NUVY">This</a> was really awful close to what I'm looking for, though, if it were only half the height.)
So the question: Can anyone local to NYC recommend a store with a good selection that I could go browse in? Or can anyone, local or not, recommend a website that might have what I'm looking for? Or can anyone tell me if I should be googling or looking for something else? Does this kind of flask have a name?

H-cubed, that's turrible close! a "nip cup", huh? :-)
Now to find a place in the continental US that sells those (and hopefully not for whatever 22 quid converts to at today's ever-worsening exchange rates... oh my poor dollar... petpet )
David_D, that was exactly what I meant when I said "searching for round flask gets me round-like-a-dartboard round". (I wonder, do those stand up when you put them on a table? or do they have to lie flat?)
I also wonder about the concept of the collapsible cup. Do they close clean, or would any remnants drip through the "cracks"? And have they ever collapsed on someone mid-drink? That would be the opposite of fun... ponder

I would say that type of flask has very limited uses. The fact that you have a cup means you can't just sneak a sip, so probably picnics only. You may want a more 'traditional' as a backup.
Also unless it's glass you shouldn't store the liquor in a metal flask, it won't taste as good and will eat through eventually.
Do you know how awkward it is to have a political argument with a naked man?

Jawje -- thanks for tip about not storing liquor in it. I was under the understanding that you could sneak a nip with a flask like that... perhaps not?
Also curious, how do you personally like sneaking a sip of Scotch from the flask? Does it taste as good to you without the, I don't know, aeration? Asking because I personally find that >50 of my enjoyment comes from the aroma, rather than the taste...

I had no idea. We should talk more 8)
Re: flasks, I've lost 3 so far. Some of them had sentimental value, which sucked. I'm terrible with flasks the way I'm terrible with sunglasses, umbrellas, hoop earrings, and (when I smoked) lighters - losing them almost as soon as I get them.
So I've decided my new approach will be to get something cheap/odd online that I won't feel bad if I lose; and maybe something nice to use in situations when I'm pretty sure I won't lose track of it.
Re: scotch, I would imagine the metal would throw off the taste somewhat... I'm more of a blackberry-brandy carrier myself :dunno:

The sneaking is tough because why would you be walking around with a small metal cup?

I usually keep it in my mouth for a little bit and breathe out so you get the aroma that way. The really smoky ones you and I like keeps the flavor for a long time so one sip does last a while. Second option of course is not underestimating the glass that never seems to empty ;)

OMG Swifty, I had one of those as a kid! Well, it was a pink and red Strawberry Shortcake one. I think we got it at a yard sale in Boston. I loved it to pieces. I took it to school from kindergarten till third grade, when the Thermos (as we called it) cracked from my dropping it :-( I think we hung on to the box for ages after, though. The flippy clasp was so much fun... and they just didn't make things like that in Asia back then.
My mom used to pack me soup or porridge for lunch in my Thermos... especially if I'd just lost a tooth... sure could use some of that right now... fond reminiscences

I havn't been up there for a while, but there is a Men's Shop on the UES, probably 3rd Ave somewhere between 75-68th Street.
Sells cigars, fancy pens, etc. etc. etc. They probably have flasks and might have what you're looking for. I would go the two flask route so you have your sippy cup for special occasions like picnics and the movies, or a sneak-a-sip flask for other occasions.
All I remember is that it was on the East side of the street mid-block. Am up that way tomorrow and can check it out for you.

Seriously look at yard sales and thrift shops. I have 3 currently. All are vintage none did I pay more then 5 for. One is a silver one that fits agaist my thigh perfect. One is a bra flask it is meant to fit into the indent in cleavage and attach to the middle section of your bra. One is a traditional pocket flask. For a picnic forget a flask get a Trave-l-bar

A) It was from a vintage shop not a thrift shop...GEESH!
B) Mine is from England and from the 1930's.
C) I have the vague memory that REI or EMS has a modern copycat version.
D) Better be sure it's just glass, Air. Don't store any booze in crystal either...lead will leach.
D) I cracked open my first bottle of MaCallan 15yr last night up...they call it "fine oak". Sublime. There was chocolate in the finish. Post-sunset at the yacht club. Pulled out a Trinidad but opted to blaze it up tonight instead.

As long as we're suggesting modern flask wisdom. If you do decide to ditch the shot glass top route, I'm gonna recommend the more modern designs with the hinged integral screwtop. In the process of cleaning or doing a surreptitious poor I've definitely lost a few tops to flasks before I got one where the top was permanently attached to the flask itself.
Other, more shameful thoughts... apple juice bottles, sippy cups, or baby bottles. ducks
The circular "dartboard" ones - I've seen some that are thick and stand on their own, I've also seen some that are totally circular and just have a tapered edge like an oversized pocketwatch or something and would not be able to stand up.
annnd on a side note - Did anyone else notice that they redesigned Strawberry Shortcake to make her thinner?

Thanks for the find, mightythor! I'm not sure I'm prepared to plunk down 65 for that when other flasks go for 20 or under - but it's nice to know they exist and are being sold; I will keep an eye out...
Help - how do I buy a flask?
