I'm one of next week's DJs for Frim Fram. I've had an idea percolating for a while and I'm finally going to make it a reality - I'm going to make this Thursday a special one-time-onlyOpen Request Thread night at Fram!
Is there a song you've been aching to hear for months but never catch? Does your favorite artist get passed over every Thursday? Nostalgic for some of those "played-out" songs that were once mainstays but rarely make an appearance these days? Make your requests here and I will play as many as I can.
I'm starting the Fram thread earlier than usual to give folks extra time to consider and make their requests. So by next Thursday, you will have had your chance to control whether the music sucks or if it's the Best. Fram. Ever. And since it's documented here, you'll know exactly who is responsible for that song you either hated or loved.
The fine print:
<
ul>
It will ultimately be my prerogative as to which of the requests I fulfill, but I think this will be a fun way to gauge what people want to hear and will be more than willing to play something that may be out of my typical "comfort range."
I will undertake the challenge of putting this inevitable mishmash of songs into an order that doesn't feel schizophrenic. Since it will probably be no easy task, I apologize for any requests that don't get met but I'll keep all requests in mind for the future. I will also likely be mixing some of my own requests into the mix.
These have to be fairly specific requests - none of that "play faster/slower/better songs" nonsense - so at least provide a song title or an artist. If someone requests Glenn Miller or "I Want a Little Girl", for example, I might use that vagueness as a challenge try to find a track I like or that the requester may or may not have heard before.
If you've got a track I don't have but think would be great, send it along to me and I'll consider it for Thursday.
Note that to prevent chaos at the DJ booth, I will NOT be taking requests actually at Fram.
I want to reiterate that this is a special one-time-only thing, so please don't expect future DJs (or myself in the future) to play a song you request on a Fram thread.[/list:u:361c20fc8c]

I'd like to request the version of Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen from Swing Kids, and if you do include it in your playlist, could you play it past 10:30pm? I would love you forever.

This is so exciting! I cannot wait to see what kind of variety there will be that night.
My request is:
1) "Give Me One Reason" by Eric Clapton
Other songs that would be fun:
2) "Plenty" by Guru with Erykah Badu
2) "Waiting For You" by Seal
2) Something else modern, fun, and uncharacteristic like "Let's Get Retarded" by the Black Eyed Peas or "You Rock My World" by Michael Jackson
3) "Baby Workout" by Jackie Wilson
3) "Twistin' the Night Away" by Sam Cooke
3) "Feeling Good" by Michael Buble

I would like to vote for the song that is the "Whole Lotta Love" of swing music: "Sing, Sing, Sing" but only if you have a version that doesn't have a long boring drums middle part. (I should try to mix one myself, maybe)
I might as well ask this sooner rather than later - Do you take unrequests to cancel out previous others' that I hate?

Songs I would not mind hearing every week at Fram:
Motherlode:
Don Redman "Swinging With the Fat Man"
Artie Shaw "Go Fly A Kite"
Gene Krupa "Kick It"
Illinois Jacquet "Jivin' With Jack The Bellboy"
Jump/R&B
Paul Gayten "Music Goes Round And Around"
Morris Lane "Return of BO Plenty"
Neo:
Duke Heitger And His Swing Band "Murder He Says"
Instead of the usual obligatory Slim & Slam:
Ink Spots "Pork Chops and Gravy"
Instead of Louis Jordan and the obligatory Slim & Slam:
The Prisonaires "That Chick's Too Young To Fry"
and in ascending order of novelty:
Barry Sisters "Zug Es Meir Noch Amool"
James Booker "Memphis Twist"
Elvis "Mess Of Blues"
Rolling Stones "Rip This Joint"

You do realize that Frim Fram is (ostensibly) a swing dance, primarily lindy-hop based?
Originally posted Sunday, November 11, 2007 (4 years ago)
I'll be thinking abou my request, but I suggest two things for Swifty to consider (after all he's the one making this possible):
1) honor code: please don't request if you're not gonna be there on the 15th.
2) I hope that if a person has multiple requests doesn't have an advantage in what Swifty selects compared someone making one request.

You do realize that in some other places people do swing dance to music like that from time to time. Doing so does not diminish their dancing skills or their love of the dance. Variety is a good thing.

I agree, variety is a good thing. As long as people play a variety of all sorts of things I like and nothing that I don't.
Never mind dancing skills, "music like that" will diminish others' enjoyment of the evening. That's why somehow I managed to keep the Cramps, Foghat, Benny Joy, Sun Ra and the New Bomb Turks of my request list. (BTW, Personally I spleen almost everything on your list)
But anyway, let's not digress. Swifty is smart, has good taste and has a large collection. People should make their requests and see what happens.

To add to the pot of requests:
Blues plus Four (not sure who does it)
Sermonette - Dukes of Dixie (Tomo sometimes plays it)
Sweet Lorraine - Stephane Grappelli
Toast My Bread - Wycliffe Gordon
"Change your thoughts, and you change your world" - Norman Vincent Peale.

I did not complain about the DJs, did I? Let's put what I did in context, okay? I've been dancing here for a while and I never once complained about the DJs or so much as tried to request a song. It was not until a DJ specifically asked for requests that I said anything, and all I said was here are some songs that I think would be fun. I have no power over what gets played and in this atmosphere probably nothing I suggested will get played. You know, if you all jump down people's throats any time they suggest something that does not fit your conception of what swing should be, then it makes me think you probably have no clue about what people want because they'll be too scared to tell you.
If you are trying to imply that I only want played what I like when I say variety is good, you are dead wrong. I like variety for its own sake. I think hearing different kinds of music challenges you as a dancer and forces you to express yourself in a different way. I could care less if you put any of those bands on your request list. If they were played whether I liked them or not I would sure as hell try to dance to them. I find that a song you do not like to listen to can take on a new and positive meaning when you listen to it for the purpose of dancing. It did not occur to me to go through people's requests and clap for what I like and boo what I do not. I am open-minded enough to try it all. In the end I may not enjoy every song, but I can appreciate that there is some merit to them and not impugn other people's tastes.
Every one of the songs I listed I have danced to at swing/lindy hop dances. When they were played the energy in the room increased. I would not have suggested them if I did not think they were danceable for the general Fram audience. And playing one modern song would not diminish a person's enjoyment of the night any more than would any other song that some people might happen to like and others not. You may not like them, but I bet you others do.
Personally, I find your attitudes judgmental and intolerant. I have never felt more unwelcomed in the New York lindy hop scene than I do at the moment.

Some of these sound fun--but I have trouble even dancing freestyle to "Hey ya"--It's great to listen to but would be almost impossible to dance lindy. Please do not play that.

How about Ryan dedicating the song suggested by the suggestor (who must be present for their song to be played) on the mike prior to each song so they can take the responsibility/credit/blame for anyone who loves/hates that song played?
Maybe put a big hat or fedora on them while the song is played so everyone knows who it is?

Ridin' and Jivin' - Earl Hines, methinks?
Your favorite tune off the Blanton-Webster set.
A Sidney Bechet tune that rocks but that doesn't get as much play.
Something by Big Joe Turner.
A Basie tune recorded live.

Joe Salzano.
Charlie Barnett.
Something dirty.
anything by dave's true story if in fact i make it to the fram
