I'm one of next week's DJs for Frim Fram. I've had an idea percolating for a while and I'm finally going to make it a reality - I'm going to make this Thursday a special one-time-only Open Request Thread night at Fram! Is there a song you've been aching to hear for months but never catch?…

Eh. He could probably just call out the forum handle of the person the request came from whenever the song begins and without pausing in between, but ... I can see how that can become very annoying very quickly. The NYSDS dance last night had a pause between EVERY SONG the band did. A long 2-minute pause. And there were complaints amongst the dancers.

hat, no. calling out song title, artist and requester might be a little annoying but also interesting for those who want to know those three pieces of info.
to avoid all annoyance, he could just post the info in the set list thread, which is what it was created for.

Absolutely adore this-please-please-please!!!!!
Quoted from "SHORTYJOY"
Quoted from "Heptamer" Rahsaan Rolan Kirk - Night Train
Bjork (Gling Glo sessions) - Ruby Baby
Flip Phillips - Znarg Blues
??? - Moten Swing (alt. take)
??? - Skaters' Waltz
Harry James - The Truth
Lavay Smith & RHSL - And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine
New Orleans Jazz Vipers - Exactly Like You
fast fast songs...
Illinois Jacquet - Speedliner
Benny Goodman - Avalon
novelty songs...(for swing, anyway)
Save Ferris - Come On Eileen
Outkast - Hey Ya
and a throwback -- Hall & Oates -- You Make My Dreams
= = =
(i'm pretty sure that even though the track is Moten Swing, Bennie Moten isn't the performer).
Some of these sound fun--but I have trouble even dancing freestyle to "Hey ya"--It's great to listen to but would be almost impossible to dance lindy. Please do not play that.
Yeah! Please play all of these (except for "Hey Ya")!

Quoted from "Zev" You do realize that no one hears the complaints about Fram DJs more early or often than RubyMae, right?
I did not complain about the DJs, did I?
I just meant that if Swifty plays the stuff on your list RubyMae will hear the complaints. So you should trust her. Sorry if you feel unwelcome, it's not about you, it's about your requests.
Anyway I don't want to hijack the thread, so if you want, take it to PM or just let it lie.

I am trying to stay hands-off for this thread but I just wanted to say that while I'm all for exploring boundaries and moving outside of comfort zones, and while I do have have fairly eclectic musical tastes and a fairly large library, I am primarily a swing/jazz/blues DJ.
Try to keep this in mind as I'm much more likely to have (and have the ability to honor requests for) swing/jazz/blues than I am to have Bjork, Outkast, Tori Amos, Hall & Oates, Black-Eyed Peas, Save Ferris, Seal, Joni Mitchell, etc. I'm all for finding new music but I'm not going to run out and buy Now That's What I Call Music! 16 just for this week's gig. If there's a non-swing song you really want to hear though, I still may consider it - I'm just trying to save people some keystrokes and some disappointment.
Anyway, this is my favorite request to date:
Quoted from "Heptamer" ??? - Moten Swing (alt. take)
It's been very interesting to me so far, but I'll save the rest of my commentary until after Thursday night. Have at it!

You do realize that Frim Fram is (ostensibly) a swing dance, primarily lindy-hop based?
You do realize that in some other places people do swing dance to music like that from time to time. Doing so does not diminish their dancing skills or their love of the dance. Variety is a good thing.
I say, save the "variety" for the West Coast Swing Dance down the street.
WCS lends itself much better to "variety" due to the slotted non-bouncey action of the dance. Lindy hop, yes, can be the circle that you squeeze into a square hole, but I personally find it very annoying when there's too much mainstream music at a Lindy event. The basic actions of Lindy don't match well with non-bouncy music like Seal, for instance. Besides, Jazz/blues is a superior genre, in general, and I would rather hear that.
I'm so over the time when DJs and dancers "explored" other genres for Lindy.

Pretty soon we will need the very thing I'm sure Swifty has been eagerly hoping for: another thread to discuss the Open Request Thread. And also maybe a role call thread too. (And some more other threads as soon as I can think of what they are...)

You're right! How about a big blackboard or one of those white boards? I'd even volunteer to write them down as they go from song to song. Could be fun.
And I really believe many dancers would also love to know the names of all the songs and who did them! I sure would!

Forgive me. I have no desire to disrupt a thread, but I feel this must be said. This will be my last word.
If I knew at the beginning of this thread what I know now, I would not have been so excited. In fact, I probably would not have posted at all. This thread contained my first post to Yehoodi in over a year, and I am reminded of why I've been so reluctant to contribute for the past year. I did not want to get involved in debates with self-righteous people who were going to try to force their opinions of what is and is not correct in swing and lindy hop. Although, I am relatively new to the NYC scene, I have been swing dancing for years now. My feelings about swing and my tastes in music are no less valid than yours. FYI Some of you may want to look into reading John Stuart Mills' On Liberty. He had some very interesting things to say about the role of minority opinions in finding the truth, namely that you should tolerate them even if you disagree because your beliefs are almost meaningless otherwise.
I cannot believe some of you people are connected to the dance I know and love. The swing dance I know is about joy, community, and individual expression, not about rigidly defining a dance and forcing that definition on others. It is about encouraging expression, not limiting it.
I have learned so much through this thread about you people (and your open resistance to ideas and opinions different than your own), the New York lindy scene, and most importantly for me, my place within this scene, or perhaps lack thereof. It has been an eye opening experience. For that I thank you, Beckto, Zev, and RubyMae.

Can't vouch for much else, but I do know that Outkast definitely has some swingable music from the Idlewild sountrack. "Call the Law" is ... probably too long for most people's tastes (nearly 5 minutes), but "When I Look Into Your Eyes" is an agreeable 2:44, midtempo, and has a lot of Charleston-sounding influence I think.
While I haven't heard the version of "Murder He Says" by Duke Heitger, I can assume it's a pretty solid track based on what I do have by his band ("Swing Pan Alley" is a particular favorite). The Tori Amos version is really good too, and from what I've listened to from her catalogue, it's pretty atypical to her usual style, so no one should worry about it having come from one of those Now That's What I Call Music albums (which I tend to really, really hate).
In any case, Swifty's the one in control of this night, as he's already said (multiple times) above. It's up to him whether he's going to play the stuff or not, so I don't believe we'll be changing the face of Lindy Hop in NYC forever unless Swifty jumps the shark and only plays late 90s boy/girl band pop hits all night (please, please, please don't). But doesn't mean he shouldn't have the opportunity to put in a little variety at his discretion. Yay.
But back on topic. if you've got "Life Goes To A Party/Jumpin' At The Woodside" by Robert Hraft (which, like my first request, is on the Swing Kids OST), I wouldn't mind hearing it either.

SwinginAngel, I think you are really reading too much into the disagreement comments. I can't think of any other reason for what appears to be extreme overreaction and indignation.

Okay, I've got two, but I have to admit that there's only about a 5 chance I'll make it to Fram:
Corey Harris & Henry Butler - Shake What Your Mama Gave You
Dave Cahill w/Jessi Teich - All Of Me
I'd be surprised if you have the second one, but the CD I have says, "feel free to copy, burn, distribute, etc", so I can send you a copy if you want it. I got it from a guy at work who helped with the CD.
If you want to check it out, Teich has a MySpace page with the track (and a nice version of Summertime from the same CD).

BTW I think this is a great idea but then again I love dancing to non-traditional Swing music.
Besides really looking forward to Fram this week I am getting a whole bunch of new songs to add to my Swing dance collection. I have been going out on ITunes and checking out most of the songs mentioned here. They are not all out there but I sure am having fun listening to this stuff.

As I said before, I hope Swifty selects songs from folks who plan to attend fram. With that said, there's a 100 chance I'll be at fram when it starts and then have to leave around 10:30.
Here are my choices:
early Billie Holiday "Easy to Love"
Maxine Sullivan "Anything Goes" (or anything else by her)
Freddie Greene "A Date with Ray" or "Feedbag"
Tim Laughlan and Jack Maheu "Panama" (or anyone else New Orleansey, I guess)

He gave me the names of the songs, but not the performers -- and there are a lot of versions of Moten Swing out there.
Anyway, after a few minutes digging around on iTunes, it's

What a great idea, Ryan! I hope it works out well, and sorry I won't be there myself.
Quoted from "lilieblue" A Sidney Bechet tune that rocks but that doesn't get as much play.
Added on top of that, I would request a Bechet song that rocks but that doesn't get much play and is between 120 - 160 bpm and doesn't have "Naughty" in the title :)
And on another note, the Oscar Peterson Moten Swing alt take - if it's the one from Night Train - ends abruptly. I've been to two dances where a DJ played it, not having listened to the whole thing, and then got booed by the dancers when the song just suddenly stopped in the middle!
