I'm one of next week's DJs for Frim Fram. I've had an idea percolating for a while and I'm finally going to make it a reality - I'm going to make this Thursday a special one-time-only Open Request Thread night at Fram! Is there a song you've been aching to hear for months but never catch?…

The Thermals "A Pillar of Salt"
Ogden Edsel "Dead Puppies."
So, what we can take away from this thread is that people are swing dancing to swing music at Fram because that is what is played, but what people really want is to "partner dance" to top 40 pop hits that they've grown up with and listen to on the radio.

I would also now like to make some unrequests. Please DON'T play these songs:
Shiny Stockings - Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie (in honor of Simone's great news, this unrequest goes out to her)
Coffee and Reefer - Ron Sunshine (played at virtually every Fram that Dave or Tomo DJ, and anyway we gotta hear something else by Ron besides "Natural Man" and "C&R", no?)
Wade in the Water - Eva Cassidy (60 thousand versions out there and the swing dancers latch on to this one??)
Anything by Hall & Oats. In fact anything by ANY Yacht Rock band, period.
"Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe" by Barry White (otherwise I request "Can't Get Enough" by Bad Company also.)
"Style is originality; fashion is fascism. The two are eternally and unalterably opposed." - Lester Bangs

I have to disagree. Maybe it's because I'm gone before midnight but I don't recall hearing Coffee and Reefer so often at Fram that playing it again would be a bad idea. If you want to hear something else please request the Ron Sunshine song of your choice.
As for Wade in the Water it seems to me the reason so many swing dancers like dancing to this version is that they are familiar with it and the breaks in it are so predictable. Yes, I know that's the same reason some people hate it but for me it brings back those days when hitting a break was a major accomplishment and made me feel like I was finally getting it. I don't see anything wrong with a song being easy to dance to. Not everyone at Fram has been dancing for years and needs a challenge.
The Barry White request was followed by "(just joking)."

Second request: Any danceable rock and roll from the 1950's. "They did do Lindy back then - I saw it!) I'd even include Elvis in that request.
I still miss some of that Rockabilly we used to dance to in the 1990's, including the Crescent City Maulers....but I'd rather not dance to 2 of them in any one night.

"You Never Remind Me" - Linda Eder
"Billy-A-Dick" - Bette Midler
A fun pile of syncopations:
"Mr. Sandman" - The Puppini Sisters
Something I've been toying with dancing Bal to (it ranges from about 150 to 330 BPM if I recall correctly):
"Bolero" - Steve Sharples (from the "Moulin Rouge" closing credits, on the second volume of the soundtrack)
A general request: songs that wander around in tempo, especially when you get less than a full beat's notice that a change is coming.

I hope to be at fram, but since I am driving down from VT, I may get there late.
I would like to hear a fast song worthy of a jam - "Tiger Rag" maybe?. My specific request would be if the DJ could then call out "Jam Time" or something because NYCers seem to be clueless about forming spontaneous jams to the best music.
Otherwise, I would like to request "Jack the Bear" by Duke Ellington as I always do. At least it is a fram-friendly speed ;)

I am unrequesting the request that the deejay call out "jam time" when a fast song is played. Either people will jam or they won't. A forced jam is completely lame.

Brenda Collins will perform at Fram tonight! Her weekend workshop is this weekend. It's a great opportunity to see what a fabulous dancer she is! I am looking forward to seeing her at Fram tonight and also to her workshop this weekend!

Today, I had a fabulous fall in the hallway after a workshop. I blame the IT department for leaving their cart in the middle of the hallway with a big metal pole sticking 3 feet out of the bottom. I didn't look down and see the pole before tripping over it b/c I was carrying pizza boxes from my workshop. !!!!!!! My shin feels like someone took a baseball bat to it. Don't know if it will survive Fram tonight...but I'm sure as h ll gonna try!

I really know what Zev secretly wants to hear: 'copacabana' by Manilow.
Thanks for looking out, Zev! And I will be trying my damnedest to make it to Fram this week!

I'm at every Fram and Coffee and Reefer gets plenty of airtime. I second Zev "unrequest."
I second all unrequests!
(
Great! Although if I unrequest "Glory of Love- Bill Bouncy" you'll have to go get someone to request it just to get it back to break-even.)

For Arfer's birthday jam, I'm requesting "Soul Shoutin'" by Shirley Scott.
(sidenote: I've played Coffee & Reefer once in the last half year or so)
I'd like to request "I've Got to be a Rug Cutter" performed by the Boilermaker Jazz Band.
Thanks!
:D

I want to know where YOU were when I was in town! :green:
Do you mean Big Bill Broonzy?

I'll be at tonight's Frim Fram.

Please do not give it to him! At least not with the rest of us yehoodites within earshot.
I hope to be at fram, but since I am driving down from VT, I may get there late.

Evita is usually good at rallying a jam. Usually a good sized whelp and some clapping will start the mob mentality in motion ;)
Do you know how awkward it is to have a political argument with a naked man?
A hundred million bajilliion times NO. LAME! Jams are organic and ALWAYS should be. Tom and Debra anybody?
Uh, yeah, what they said.
Also, could you play 'Honeysuckle Rose'?
Fats' version? One of my favorites!
"Change your thoughts, and you change your world" - Norman Vincent Peale.
Crap, can't make it tonight. Try to have fun without me.

Did she also choreograph the shag performance at the Fram around Halloween?
No, I believe that was Michael Jagger and Evita Arce who did that choreography - they teach at Dance Manhattan.
