One Frim Fram Only! 11/15: Open Request Thread

  • Posted 4 years ago

I'm one of next week's DJs for Frim Fram. I've had an idea percolating for a while and I'm finally going to make it a reality - I'm going to make this Thursday a special one-time-only Open Request Thread night at Fram! Is there a song you've been aching to hear for months but never catch?…

Today, I had a fabulous fall in the hallway after a workshop. I blame the IT department for leaving their cart in the middle of the hallway with a big metal pole sticking 3 feet out of the bottom. I didn't look down and see the pole before tripping over it b/c I was carrying pizza boxes from my workshop. !!!!!!! My shin feels like someone took a baseball bat to it. Don't know if it will survive Fram tonight...but I'm sure as h ll gonna try!

Sorry to hear that--I hope you are OK--What was your request?

Awwww, thanks Joy!

As for a request, how about "Dear Old Dad" by Paul Tillotson?

Also, "Plenty" with Guru and Erykah Badu would be a great blast from the past!

Plus, I'd like to hear "Moten Swing" alt version 1963 Unknown Artist underground solo bass rendition by Heptamer and his cats

Thanks everyone for your requests! I had a lot of fun mixing in requested songs and some of my own picks. My setlist is posted on the setlist thread with the request info next to the requested tracks. Ultimately about 2/3 of my sets were requests in some form or another.

If anyone is at all curious, my main inspirations for trying this were:

  • An opportunity to learn what Frammers want to hear
  • An opportunity to expand my typical range
  • An opportunity for the Fram music complainers to have a little control for one week
  • An opportunity for an extra challenge for me as a DJ in the booth

I think the night was successful for me in all four aspects. I have to admit that for the most part the requests weren't at all like I had expected and I learned a lot. I hope everyone else enjoyed the experiment too. It was a lot of fun for me trying to figure out a way to meet as many requests as possible while still keeping some sort of flow throughout the night. I think it could have easily become disjointed and all over the place but I think it worked out well. Not something I'd like to do regularly but it was fun for a change.

I apologize for requests I didn't get to fulfill - unfortunately(?) I didn't have internet connection at Fram so I didn't get an opportunity to download some of the more unique requests. I do intend to give all of the songs I didn't play a good listen and if I like them I'll try to play them in the future.

As always, I'm very happy to talk music and DJing so if you ever have any questions about music I've played (or haven't) feel free to come find me.

That was absolutely one of the most fun Frams i've been to in quite a while, in part bc of the music, for sure. Thanks, Swifty (and Heather of course)

great job Swifty. As I said on the set list thread, you accompliashed your goal and everyone seemed happy to be a little part of it. Do it again in 6 mos. :-)

Great job you guys!! I loved the eclectic mix of music, (even though there was no rock and roll or Elvis in the mix - I think in the future, people should have more notice to post their requests so the DJ has more time to get it all together.)

Many people I danced with commented about liking the music, so no matter what one or two of you say, I think it was a successful experiment.

Thank you, Swifty, for playing "Baby Workout" and "Twistin' the Night Away." I greatly enjoyed dancing to them. :D

Not sure why I posted that trophy to both threads. Maybe because it is the most awesome trophy ever in the history of awards and trophies? :dunno:

I would also like to pile on by saying how much I enjoyed dancing when I wasn't (and hell, sometimes when I was) DJing. I think Swifty did a great job transitioning between so many different kinds of music and I might second the every six months (or once a year?) suggestion by Jerry.
