Comedy Central sounds the 'Gong' Dave Attell to host the update By Kimberly Nordyke May 8, 2008, 08:50 PM The gong is back. Comedy Central has greenlighted "The Gong Show With Dave Attell," ordering eight half-hour episodes of an updated version of the classic talent show to premiere July 17. The series -- from Sony Pictures Television, Happy Madison Prods. and executive producer Andrew Golder (NBC's "Identity") -- will feature offbeat acts judged by a panel of three revolving celebrity judges. A talent search is under way. "Dave is the perfect guy to host this series," said Lauren Corrao, president of original programming and development at the cabler. "His dry, comedic wit paired with the outspoken personalities of our celebrity judges and the outrageous acts will crexate a fresh take on the famed series." Holly Jacobs, senior vp syndication and reality at Sony, called "Gong Show" an "iconic" format that will now be introduced to a new generation of viewers. Added Attell: "Stars will be made; feelings will be hurt." Attell hosted four seasons of Comedy's "Insomniac With Dave Attell" and recently appeared in his own stand-up special on HBO. He is repped by UTA and 3Arts. Golder's credits include Comedy Central's "Win Ben Stein's Money."

This could go south pretty quickly, but I think Dave Attell is the perfect fit. Hopefully these guys will show Idol/Dancing with the stars/etc. how it's really done.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Plus they get made fun of, as they rightly deserve.

While anything without Chuck Barris (and a drunken, unruly audience) can ever, truely be The Gong Show , I think Attell is probably the best pick possible.

Remember, they've tried to revive the show once or twice before and they were miserable failures.

SwingKid570, there's another factor from the old Chuck Barris version that is easy to forget: the house band was Completely And Utterly Awesome. Barris (not just the host, but the executive producer) must have found a bunch of old-time big-band musicians under bandleader Milton DeLugg. If you've ever watched the reruns on GSN, they're HAWT. And especially the reworked "Jumpin' At The Woodside" theme that accompanies Gene Gene The Dancing Machine.

Exactly what I was thinking.

If they are willing to skirt the edges and not overproduce it like those big money shows, then maybe they have a chance.

Now that they're on youtube, what I wouldn't have given back in the day for youtubes of the Unknown Comic crowd warm-ups. One more reason I love the original. Can you imagine Jay Leno having an audience warmer upper that's nothing but 10 minutes of put-downs all at Leno's expense? (Hey Chuckie!...)

That's part of why I like that choice. So much of the greatness of the original is how grungy it often was, though nowadays we just think of the nostalgia. Attell brings some of that "just barely teetering on the edge" thing. Plus the fact that it's on Comedy Central means they'll be more willing to take chances than network TV would be.

Anyway, one of my favorites from the classic show. The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo.

too true. I've been having their version of "Jumpin'" playing on the mental jukebox since I first posted on this thread. I wonder if my coworkers would notice if I started moving around the office like Gene Gene?

Just saw an add for this on CC. IT looks like Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog shows up as a judge in at least one episode.
