The next big dance scene

So, this kinda goes with the "Pick Up and Move" thread. It seems that different scenes gain momentum then die down. First it was DC, then LA, and then Seattle. I've spoken with a number of dancers, instructors, world champions, and legends. As of right now, Seattle has the #1 dance…

Oh and I also love the Boston scene, the music is way too slow for my taste but I love the people!

I remember going to the Roxy back in 1999 but it wasn't so people friendly back then. Quite possibly because it was at the beginning of the "fad" in Boston, and those overly judgmental dancers probably don't dance anymore. It took a long while before I went back to dance there, went to an exchange and then there was no exchanges anymore and it looked as though the scene practically died or had their big night of dancing on monday which made it impractical to visit.

It seemed like the scene, lived, it died and then witnessed a rebirth with the birth of the BIX series, but to ask a local, they probably think I'm crazy because the scene never died for them. It's really a perception really. We can't all like the same music or genre of swing, but we do what we can when there's people involved.

I didn't meet a whole lot of locals when I was there, but those I did were lovely people, and I'm all about the people first, and if they can also dance marvelously, then that's just gravy!

I'm confused by this statement. You came to Satchmo Fest last year, White Linen Night, and the WWII Museum dance where there were 350 locals dancing. Is it that you just didn't personally meet them or that you didn't realize they were all locals? ;)

I meant local dancers. :) I didn't meet very many personally less my amazing and attractive host and Jody of course. At Satchmo fest, I met Pennsacola dancers and I only danced with one person at White Linen Night. WWII didn't count because I was preoccupied with my ex-gf. :P I danced with a few grannies, I like putting smiles on people's faces. :)

So you're saying grannies prefer quality to size? Or maybe they'll just take whatever they can get....

Good lord. When are you people going to realize the next great dance scene is going to be in Frankyboy's pance???

Dear Peter, Why hating on all the other American scenes outside of Seattle? I have to admit I'd only danced there once (Seattle) and it was absolutely lovely, but was crapping out Los Angeles because of where they took the their dance and music necessary?

Yep, it's necessary. Orange County is kicking our butts, which just isn't right. On the positive side a backlash against groove is starting to emerge. There's a few more events starting and a lot of chatter about how to get more going.

Groove does have comic value however, as they teach beginners Charleston and other non-groovy moves before the dance for some reason...only to play Wade in the Water later. Ever see Charleston done to WitW? OMG, it's such an awesome disaster, I love it.

Boston is cool because they have the Red Sox, Fenway Park and fun swing dancers. That combination is enough reason to visit although I wouldn't rule out moving there for the same reasons. I concur that the music tastes seem to be a tad on the slow side but the people make up for that, at least at the Monday night "practice".

I've been to Seattle several times, the primary draw for me is the Lindy Hop scene.

I'm looking forward to visiting NOLA during ULHS this year but that's just an added excuse to visit. I'm going primarily as a tourist for live music and food. I'm happy hanging out at a club with great music, decent food and a pint of the local ale. The opportunity to watch some badass competitions is just a bonus.

Charleston to groovy stuff is funny. The lesson last Tuesday at our local outdoor dance was Charleston. Some of the newbies danced it to everything including the soul/r&b/beach music I was playing at the end of the evening. It was kind of comical but that's the only partner dancing they knew. The upside was they were enjoying themselves and stayed the entire evening. I think the ability of a scene to attract and retain new dancers speaks more to success than rock-stars.

I vote Shanghai will be the next big dance scene.

But it depens on what youre counting if you're counting star phuckers than I would change my vote.

Hey, you'll be glad to know that there is a small but growing movement for fast lindy and bal here in Boston. I'm helping get a new monthly dance off the ground, and we're going to have different music genres each month- fast lindy and bal being among them. I hope you'll come out here and check it out soon!

It's true! And BIX has been a boon to Boston. Having George Gee's Jump Jivin' Wailers here this year was fantastic.

That sounds exciting, but neither of those things you mentioned are genres of music.
