Awww... I'm going to have to miss the huge Jack and Jill to get my graduation on.
Also, any idea yet about how the levels will work for the classes? I see that auditions are being held for the master classes. Will there be auditions for the advanced classes as well?

Quoted from "lilieblue" The class schedule is out! Check it out here: http://frankie95.com/class-schedule.php
FYI, we're going to have to change the timing of the masters auditions because of the memorial services for Frankie. We'll let you know once we've figured that out.

Quoted from "rikomatic" We'll try and keep this page updated too, for your reference. Thanks everyone for your patience as we finalized bands and acts.
Will you be able to give for us indication as to when or in what order bands will appear before the event begins?
BTW, slammin' lineup. An incredible assemblage. Kudos.

Generally speaking, anytime you see two or more bands listed at a particular time, it means that they will be alternating sets with each other. For the most part each band's set will last 30-50 minutes depending on the night.
Also, the way they are listed in each slot shows what order they are starting. The exception is Thursday. Gordon Webster and the Jazz Vipers got flipped for some reason.

So, just out of curiosity, I wanted some information about the second line parade from the memorial to City Park. What band is playing? Will there be handkerchiefs, a grand marshal, banners, photos? Just wanted to know what I should bring and what will be provided.
Originally posted Tuesday, May 12, 2009 (3 years ago)
I'm assuming, for the second line parade, that nothing will be laid on (IMHO it's too little time, and I'm assuming additional cost, for the organizers to lay it on). So Jayna, help us out - traditionally, what does one do/wear/wave/etc. in a second line? I've never done one. Perhaps we can all bring what we need for ourselves.

That's what I had figured. No use in doing a half-ass second line parade where everyone is dressed "somberly" and then walk in a line to Central Park.
Here's a picture from our second line. Banners and posters are a definite.
Amy did a great job on this poster, and we made some smaller ones a couple of hours before the memorial.
There's also a grand marshal leading the first line (the band) and the second line (the guests). They usually carry large fans and a whistle. It would be great if Chaz was the designated honorary Grand Marshal.
We also use decorative umbrellas to parade with. I plan on making my own and bringing it.
Here's a link to Antoinette K-Doe's Jazz Funeral. Antoinette was a famous New Orleans character who just passed away. Her husband was the famed Ernie K-Doe who sang the song "Mother-In-Law" back in the 1950's.
This was a public jazz funeral.
Lastly, you have to bring handkerchiefs. They're used for crying when the somber music plays, but when the music picks up, you dance with them. They can be a regular handkerchief or customized for the occasion.
As for the "somber" dress code for the memorial, that's totally understandable and respected, but I hope you have some bright colors to wear underneath. A jazz second line is anything but somber. It celebrates the life of the deceased person in heaven (even if you're athiest) as well as new life on earth. Be prepared to strip off the black for some purple, greens, and golds!

Attention all New Orleans dancers coming to the Festival, as well as all other creative-minded dancers!
Yes, please let's make this a very special Second Line, so please bring posters of Frankie, Umbrellas, etc, etc. That's very cool what you all did in New Orleans. We'd love for the New Orleans group to "take the lead" on this since this is really how you roll, and we'd love for people from all over to contribute to this, too. Please spread the word!
We already have an amazing band leading the Second Line, David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band. As you may recall, they led the Second Line after Lionel Hampton's funeral.
This is one of the few events that the public is going to be seeing. Heading from 5th and 55th straight to the Central Park Bandshell. Let's represent Frankie and lindy hop well!

FYI:
Visitors, if you are planning on visiting Ground Zero or downtown Manhattan today (Sunday), be advised that NYPD, and other agencies, will be conducting an emergency drill (attack/evacuation at PATH station) all morning.
So, either change your plans or bring your camera.

Monday Panels now open to the public!
While priority access to the Monday Panels will give to those with workshop passes for the Festival, we are going to make them open to the public as space permits. The panels are:
3:30 PM Presentation on Lindy Hop to Hip Hop at the Gymnasium
7:00 PM Presentation on The 80's Revival: Rediscovering Frankie and Lindy Hop at the Manhattan Center
These are great to invite people to who want to learn more about the lindy hop movement.

A question - in our registration package, will we be getting the most updated printed schedule (each day's activities on one page sort-of-thing) and map, or should we preprint it prior to registration?
Thanks!

A post above may have answered a question I once asked on another thread, which was:
For those with second wave tickets, (NO workshops/NO Thursday Night dance/NO Live sunday Show) when do our evenings begin?
To be more specific, are we allowed to come to the discussions that are scheduled immediately prior to the main dances every evening?
After reading the post about the Monday night doscussion being "opened up," I am inclined to think I better not arrive on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday until the doors for the main dance are open.
Originally posted Monday, May 18, 2009 (3 years ago)
Anyone with a festival pass will be allowed into the panel discussions prior to the doors opening for dancing. The panels are NOT part of 'classes.'
There will be a handout on the registration table with the absolutely up-to-date schedule for you to take with you. That said, it will also be available online prior to the start of the festival for you to print, download, add to your calendar as you see fit.

I may be missing something, but the general schedule doesn't indicate which event is at which venue. The venues page doesn't say that either. There must be a one-to-one list someplace. Specifically, I don't know where the following take place:
Thursday
7:30 presentation
8:30 dance
Friday
3:30 Jack & Jill
7:00 presentation
8:30 Dance
12:30 Late night
Sat
6:30 presentation
8:30 dance
Sun
9:00 dance
12:00 J&J finals (same location?)
Mon
7:00 presentation
8:30 dance
