Droid is the marketing name Verizon is applying to it's line of Android devices. Yes, it's Lucas' word, but they went and got the rights to use it. Anyway, their top of the line Droid is this Motorola:
$199 on contract
Android 2.0
Visual Voicemail
3.7-inch display (854 x 480 resolution)
5 megapixel camera (with dual-LED flash)
Bundled 16GB memory card (user replaceable with a 32GB card)
Beta version of Google Maps Navigation
Slide-out QWERTY keyboard
3G & WiFi, of course
Voice-activated search
Amazon MP3 downloads
etc... etc... etc...
Looking at those specs, and reading other first impressions, I'm still quite happy with my iPhone, but I think iPhone finally has some legit competition on it's hands... especially since this is on Verizon's network. Who knew it would come in the form of a Motorola.
God bless competition though, since I hope this will finally force Apple to get off their asses and really cram some more tech into their phone... and I hope this will finally force AT&T to take care of their network issues.

I loooove my G1, and I think the Android platform works well. The system updates have been noticeable and largely helpful. I'm also a big booster for T-Mobile customer service and the network isn't as good as Verizon, but it's better than others.

Damn, just a few months after I got my G1. While it's a damn slick looking piece of hardware, I think the release of Android 2.0 is even more exciting. Google Navigation stands out as a killer FREE feature, but there's a lot overall to look forward to here. I just hope someone (likely the mod community) will figure a way to get it onto my current G1.

Well my husband and I got ours this weekend. So far I'm pretty happy with it. Still browsing through the apps and trying to make decisions. My biggest complaint so far is that the pretty pink case I bought and they put on at the store is falling off one corner and I can't get it back on.

Fifty, when exactly are you looking to get a new phone? March is looking like a pretty interesting time for cell phones. Verizon in particular is getting the Motorola Devour next month (some nice features, but overall a less powerful phone than the Droid), and they are probably getting the Google Nexus One very soon. I haven't heard anything about Verizon pricing on that, but T-Mobile's was pretty interesting: basically if you bought the phone outright from Google (about $500), your phone service was $20/month lower, and no contract lock-in.
If you want the Droid, and are not on Verizon right now, I've seen specials this week to get the phone for $120 with contract.
I'd probably avoid the iPhone because NYC+AT&T=bad, but what carrier are you with now, and are you on contract?
Is this the Droid you've been looking for?

The Google Navigation built into Android 2.0 looks awesome. Includes satellite view, street view for turns and final destination, and traffic reports.

This phone is awesome. I will say more after it launches. Go stand in line at the VerizonWireless store now.

I just want a phone that's water-proof, dust-proof, drop-proof, Eff-proof, and comfortably fits in my pocket.

I think that's more than a rumor. Plus if you go to BB you can get the rebate instantly instead of mailing in a form and getting a gift card.

Trying to decide still between this Droid and IPhone with it's reception problems. Any advice??
