Yehoodi is sponsoring the July 10 Midsummer Night Swing with Michael Aranella and the Dreamland Orchestra and DJ Ryan Swift. So, there will be NO FRIM FRAM JAM at Club 412 that night. The event is held at Damrosch Park and the bandshell, NOT the usual spot on the plaza by the fountains. You can dance for free on concrete, or pay $15 for access to the wood dance floor. This includes a free lesson at 6:15 p.m. Live music is 7:30-10 p.m., with DJ Swifty handling the band breaks.

Not that we normally go after listings (we get plenty of dancers) it was cool to have Fram listed in TimeOut New York magazine's article last week on where to dance in NYC (pg. 14, Harlem's Cotton Club got a write up as well). And they didn't dis us swing dancers for once, schwing, we win!The college-age and early-twenties crowd at the Frim Fram Jam has an equal guy-to-girl ratio and knows how to swing. Lonely girls will get many invitations from eager young lads, most of whom can either teach you something or let you shine. You Should Be Dancing, 412 Eighth Ave at 31st St (212-244-0011). Thu 9pm–1am, $8. From TimeOut NY, issue July 3-9, '08, pg. 14. Sweet! |

We got an update from Judy Pritchett about Frankie Manning, who had hip replacement surgery a few weeks ago:This year's surgery was much more complicated because it involved removing all the cement and paraphrenalia from the old hardware before building him a new hip. The incision scar is much larger and Frank woke up from surgery with a great deal of pain. Standing up or walking was out of the question for quite a while. Still Frankie's spirits were always high and there was often a party atmosphere in his room. I am attaching a picture taken about one week after the surgery. On the left is Cynthia Millman, Frankie's collaborator on his autobiography, Ambassador of Lindy Hop. On the right is Margaret Batiuchok, a great dancer and one of the spearheads of the Lindy Hop revival in the early 1980's....
...Seeing Frankie these last few days, I am convinced that he will be back teaching and dancing --- I can't say when, but I can see that nothing will stop him. He can see it too, and he is very happy about it.... Click on "more info" for the complete message. Oh and if you want to be on an email list to receive updates about Frankie's condition, please email July at swingdanceshop@savoystyle.com. (more info...)

Find more videos like this on Midsummer Night Swing
One of the best parts of swinging in the summer in New York is dancing outdoors at Lincoln Center's Midsummer Nights Swing concert series. This year's series is much shorter than years past, but still sounds like a great lineup of bands (some more swingable than others). Tickets on the always packed dance floor are $15, or you can go for free and just dance on the pavement with the rest of the cheapo's like me. Here's the obvious ones for getting your lindy on, but feel free to check out the others ( *cough cough* Chuck Brown July 9 *cough cough*):- July 8: Nellie McKay & The Aristocrats Swing Band
- July 10: Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra (NOTE: there is no Frim Fram that night!)
- July 15: Alan Gresik Swing Shift Orchestra
- July 22: Harlem Renaissance Orchestra with special guest Mary Stallings
- July 24: Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers
Get all the straight skinny at the MidSummer Nights Swing website, and check out their new social networking site!

"Shorty George" Snowden was born this day in 1904. He lead the first generation of Lindy Hop dancers at the Savoy Ballroom, and is often credited with giving Lindy Hop its name. He is a central figure in the creation of the Lindy Hop. A top dancer at the Savoy Ballroom from its opening in 1927 into the early 30's, Snowden formed the first professional Lindy Hop troupe, the Shorty Snowden Dancers. They performed with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra at the Paradise Club downtown through most of the thirties. Although he was barely five feet tall, Snowden made his height an asset rather than a liability. With comic genius, he parodied himself in his signature "Shorty George" step, in which his bent his knees, swinging from side to side, exaggerating his closeness to the ground. Count Basie, always attuned to the dancers, honored Shorty with the swing hit "Shorty George".
Snowden retired in 1938, the only Lindy Hopper commemorated in a dance step, the "Shorty George." His unique reversal of the ballroom tradition, that was copied by many others, in which a later partner, Big Bea, tossed him in the air, opened the doors to any and every innovation in the dance.
"Happy Birthday, and thank you for giving us the gift of swing!" |
