"Pushing play, takin' names..."
Please note: Due to my busy non-swing schedule, I can no longer accept DJ-only gigs. I'm devoting most of my available time to teaching gigs. Thanks!
One day Elena Ianucci, co-owner of Dance Manhattan, asked me to DJ at their local lindy dance. Armed with about 10 swing CDs, I went into the DJ booth and enjoyed my first night as a swing DJ.
About 800 CDs later, I'm still going strong. I enjoy the music that I play for dancers. Being an active dancer, it's important to me that the music make people want to bounce. I take my music very seriously (and with milk and sugar).
Here are some events where I broke some of my CDs:
USA
Soflex, FL
Hush, NY
Swing46, NY
Atlanta Lindy Exchange, GA
Swingout New Hampshire, NH
Boston Tea Party, MA
Lindyfest, TX
Dallas Bodyshop, TX
Harlem Jazz Festival, NY
Frankie Birthday Cruise 2003, 2004, On a big boat
International
Herrang Dance Camp, Sweden
Paris, France
Montpellier Swing Festival, France
Melbourne Lindy Exchange, Australia
Swingapore Jitterbugs, Singapore
People often ask my advice on music. Here's a great list maintained by Paul Overton of swing music that should get you started.
I'll post a list of my favorite songs soon, but some of my favorite swing artists include Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, Junior Mance, Barbara Morrison, Carmen McRae and Stevie Wonder (if only he played swing music).
