In January, we reported that Max Pitruzzella, an internationally known lindy hop dancer, was accused by five women of sexual assault. We are receiving more recent reports that Pitruzzella has been spotted over the past couple of weeks participating in – and possibly even teaching at – several lindy hop events in Italy. Photos of him social dancing and chatting with visiting swing dignitaries have been shared with us, among other evidence.

Folks have been sounding the alarm on Facebook and Reddit, provoking a larger discussion about what should or can be done. A lengthy debate is going on in the Roman Lindy Hop Facebook group as of this posting.

Among other responses, a Safe Space pledge is being circulated in several languages stating the following:

The Swing Dance community has grown a lot in the past few years, welcoming dancers from every part of the world and of any age. As instructors, organizers, musicians and leaders in our local scenes, we make it a priority to hold both new and long-time dancers in a safe environment. Having a principle of maximum caution, we will not accept the presence of people accused of assault and/or violence against women in our dance studios or venues, until completely cleared without any possible doubt on their innocence. People, and in particular women, need to be able to approach the world of Swing Dance without any fear, knowing that they are in a community where everyone looks out for each other.

Several prominent lindy hop dancers and musicians have stated publicly that they will not participate in any event where Pitruzzella is present.

We are monitoring the situation and will share more as we become aware of new developments. Let's take care of each other, people.
